Mission: The mission of Friends of Ngong Road is to fund education and provide support for children living in the impoverished urban communities of Nairobi whose lives are affected by HIV/AIDS.
Results: The program has grown quickly. We sponsored 60 children for the school year beginning in January, 2007 and were able to double that with an additional 60 children sponsored for the May 2007 term. This took us to 120 children in the Program for the 2007 school year. By the end of the 2008 school year we had enrolled over 215 children and over 250 by the end of 2009. Our goal is to enroll over 400 children by the end of 2013.
Target demographics: Children in the impoverished "villages" of Nairobi whose families are affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We strive to select children of high academic potential
Direct beneficiaries per year: We now have over 300 students in the program. In addition we employ a staff of 11 in Nairobi, plus three part-time cook..
Programs: We match u. S. Sponsors with children in nairobi kenya for education/support. Sponsorship covers costs for the child's tuition, uniform, books, shoes, lunch each day, and basic health care. I first came into contact with Friends of Ngong Road when I was a student studying abroad in Kenya. I volunteered at their Saturday program where I read books and assisted with the meal. Six years later I joined as development staff. The business acumen, strategy, and care for the students are top-notch.
