Mission: Friends of materials for the arts is the 501 (c) (3) sister entity of materials for the arts - a unit of the department of cultural affairs of the city of new york. This not-for-profit entity provides a vehicle for private foundations, corporations, and individuals to support the work of materials for the arts. Operating continuously since 1978, materials for the arts takes in donations of materials from businesses and individuals and redistributes them, for free, to nyc non-profits with arts programming and public schools.
Programs: Educationthe education center at mfta continues to provide a wide variety of programs such as field trips for students including a hands on art project; in school residencies where our teaching artists work with students and model for teachers at their schools; year round professional development classes for educators; an artist in residence program and community outreachevents where we advocate for creative reuse. This year we increased the number of field trips offered by 10%. Gallerythe art gallery at materials for the arts is gaining notoriety and has become a destination for members of the mfta community to exhibit work created with unusual and alternative materials. Over the course of the last fiscal year we hosted five shows in the gallery and exhibition space. Donations/truckingbringing donations into the warehouse continues with help from friends of materials for the arts by hiring 3rd party movers to accommodate our donors when the city's drivers cannot accomplish the work. Eventsin the spring of 2017, we hosted an intimate evening concert with the legendary paul simon. This event helped us raise about $50,000 for our programming.
Materials for the Arts has provided my organization with the items we needed to hold a great event and support our non-profit. As well as giving us the opportunity to hold a great event that brought our audience and our donors together, we made some really great take-away bags that attendees could take and create a handmade gift inspired by a free evening class for art professionals we also attended at Materials for the Arts. Friends of Materials for the Arts supports the programming and warehouse shopping programs at Materials for the Arts, and they make what many of the NYC arts nonprofits do possible. Props to all you've done for us!
