Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arms Control & Peace, Crime & Law, International, International Peace & Security, Rehabilitation Services for Offenders

Mission: Friends for a Non-Violent World, founded in 1981, grew out of the vision of local Quakers to have an expression of their peace testimony. The focus of the organization has always been on promoting non-violence, but has taken many forms in the past 20 years. Currently, FNVW offers Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops in several Minnesota prisons and schools. In addition, FNVW also sponsors a week long, intergenerational summer camp based on the theme of nonviolence. Additional community education programs are offered about resistance to military violence.

I have been a volunteer with FNVW for over five years. This organization has a long history of working to create peaceful interactions among individuals and communities. The people I have met have left me in awe of the power of community-building and the commitment of individuals to build bridges and listen with care and compassion. I am currently a board member and volunteer actively involved in working with the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP).

I have known both the previous Executive Director, Jenn Hamrick, and current Executive Director, Leah Robshaw-Robinson and FNVW volunteers to be incredibly involved in contributing to creating a more peaceful world both by advocating for peace internationally and through local work and advocacy. I have heard a lot of positive feedback on the Alternatives to Violence program in local prisons and the training volunteers undergo in order to lead these workshops. I've been glad to be a part of working groups with FNVW where local peace and social justice organizations have come together to make an impact through nonviolence in the Twin Cities such as through MAP and Twin Cities Nonviolent. Keep up the good work!
