Open Door came to my rescue when I was finding it hard to get to the grocery store. I used to have no problem walking to the store and carrying my groceries. If it wasn’t for them and the care they put in every month making sure I have what I need, I am not sure what I would do. I still have to go to the store for items they may not have but I am often surprised by what they do have. I am grateful to the donors and the amazing pantry team that keep it going for seniors like me.
Never, has there been a person that has met Erika that hasn’t admired her. All of her clients, interns, volunteers, peers and coworkers all respect her. We are all in awe of her work ethic, her professionalism and her caring heart. I am honored to be able to witness the tremendous help that she is able to provide for the community. Open Door is a better place because of her efforts.
The volunteers and staff at open door are amazing! Now more then ever their service to the community is vital! Thank you for all you do!

I am a community social worker has referred several clients to open door. The staff/volunteers are always so kind and generous. Recently when they found out my clients had lost a loved one they dropped off “comfort bags” to them. They always go above and beyond and treat everyone like a welcomed guest.
Erika is commended for her deep-rooted compassion and the initiatives she takes to help people who are struggling physically, mentally and who are in need. The work she does for so many helps them manage their struggles, and guides them productively.
I first came to Open Door when I was struggling and had to move. They helped ease the transition by making sure I had enough to feed my family while dealing with all of those extra moving expenses. Happily, we are settled in our new place, but I still need Open Doors's support. Everyone is so friendly and they go the extra mile for me and my family. One night I came in beyond exhausted after work. They searched around and found some frozen pizzas for me. I didn't have to cook dinner that night! Their concern for my family's wellbeing is genuine. Thank you!
I cannot say enough kind things about Erika and how she and Open Door have helped me. She is always so helpful and caring. When I first came to Open Door she took the time to listen to my situation, and gave me kind and caring advice. Open Door is a lifeline that helps you get through a rough patch, and gets you back on your feet. Thank you!
Volunteering at Open Door has been an incredibly rewarding experience. This organization is deeply committed to providing essential support to those in need, offering not just food, but hope and dignity. The team of Geralynn, Erika and Alyce work tirelessly to ensure that every individual and family who walk through their doors feels welcome and cared for.
The pantry is well-organized, ensuring a smooth and efficient distribution process. The staff and volunteers are compassionate and dedicated, creating a warm and welcoming environment. It's evident that every effort is made to address the unique needs of each client, which is truly inspiring.
Additionally, the pantry engages with the community through various outreach programs, further extending their impact. It's a privilege to be part of such a selfless and impactful organization. I highly recommend supporting Freehold Area Open Door in any way you can, whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word about our incredible work.
Open Door and Erika have been such a blessing. They have helped me when I was struggling and continue to support my family and me. Right now, being able to use the Choice Pantry once a month has really helped me with my food bills. You are the best. I would give you 10 stars if I could!
As a volunteer at Open Door I want to give a shoutout during Social Worker month to the incredible Erika! She is a vital member of the truly amazing staff at Open Door. Erika always goes above and beyond connecting with each client. She has an innate ability to take each client from feeling hopeless to HOPEFUL. Erika works nonstop to ensure each and every person has their needs met.
THANK YOU, Erika!

Do you want to make a difference in your community? Then please check out Freehold Area Open Door! I recently joined this organization as an alternate representative on the Board and as a Food Pantry volunteer. Open Door is an outstanding and very necessary part of the community. It is warm, welcoming and goes above and beyond to support individuals and families in Freehold and surrounding communities. Geralyn, the Executive Director, Erika , the Advocacy Director, and Alyce, the Food Pantry Coordinator have created an extremely well run, efficient center to provide food and other services to those in need. Many volunteers make this organization work seamlessly. From food pick-up from donor stores, to drop off at OD, to sorting and shelving donated goods, to packing orders, to helping clients choose fresh produce and breads, to welcoming clients at the door, to checking in clients on the computer, to cleaning counters and getting ready for the next day- volunteers are essential in so many ways! Each and every volunteer I have met has been so hardworking and willing to go above and beyond to fulfill the needs of each client.
Some volunteers come every day, some once or twice a week, and some once or twice a month. There are so many choices as to how and when one can volunteer. I highly recommend volunteering at Open Door and finding the niche that suits you and fulfills the needs of so many people!
I’m a life long resident of Freehold and have been a volunteer with Open Door for several years. I am always so impressed by the professionalism, compassion and commitment of the staff, and especially their social worker Erika. Every client is treated with dignity and respect, their needs are assessed and they are provided with assistance quickly and efficiently.

What an amazing organization! I have been a donor to their food pantry for many years. Since my retirement in 2021 I have sought ways to increase my involvement and I recently became a member of the FAOD Board of Trustees. I am beyond impressed with all that they do, not only to provide food but also to assist with advocacy for those in need. The daily operations are very well organized and the number of people served over the past several years has grown significantly. The staff deserve kudos for getting it all done from a place of true concern for the needs of the community while always demonstrating respect for the dignity of every client. I'm proud to say I'm part of this!
Erika is always asking me how things are going, and really takes the time to listen to me. She is a very sweet girl.
I cannot say enough about the support I receive from the food pantry and the advocacy program. Erika is amazing. Bless your heart for caring. Thank you.
I am a school counselor in Howell and I reached out to Open Door in the hopes that they can assist some of my families in need. Geralyn and Alyce reached out to me offering assistance right away. I went today to pick up the donations and I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of assistance, help and caring people that are willing to assist my families in Howell. They were both more than happy to continue helping us. I will be reaching out once a month.
I am so grateful for this amazing organization.
Thank you,

Thank you Open Door for being there for me and my family. And thank you Erika for being sweet, kind and everything you'd want in a person.
I appreciate everyone at Open Door, but especially Erika. She goes the extra mile. She's kind, dedicated and very good at returning my phone calls.
The wonderful people at Freehold Open Door Pantry connected with us four years ago. They have been wonderful partners to our pantry twice a week since that day.
The volunteers are cheerful and helpful, which is amazing as the hauling of food gets exhausting.
This pantry is clean, well run, thank youcommunicates effectively and has a caring heart.
Five stars does not say enough about the job they do!
This wonderful organization is generous and assists all those in need. Everyone is welcomed and shown kindness and understanding.
I enjoy going to open door every week and the people that work there are very helpful. The place is very organized, clean and neat. I enjoy all of the volunteers and I’m very happy to be a part of it. I feel that this is really a service for our community. Thank you Lynn Ritchie.
I grew up in Freehold and when I returned to open my practice, Hometown Family Wellness Center I knew I wanted to give back to the community by holding an annual holiday food drive. The Open Door is a great place for our collections to be brought to every New Year to help them feed those in need. I've been doing this for nearly 20 years and the staff is so pleasant and helpful when I deliver the items.

My wife and I are both retirees. Over the years we have volunteered for various organizations but not together. A few months ago on the recommendation of a friend who volunteers at Open Door of Freehold we both started volunteering at Open Door. We have found it to be a very rewarding experience. The staff are a pleasure to work with and so are the volunteers of all ages. It is wonderful to be able to provide food to people who are less fortunate and see how grateful they are when they leave. Open Door of Freehold is an asset to the community as they provide other services beside distributing food. Thank you Open Door of Freehold for all you do!
This non-profit is a great place to volunteer at. The staff are really nice and help you to the best of their abilities. They always make sure that you’re okay with doing something. It’s a great place to help those that are less fortunate!
After being retired for several years, I started to volunteer at Open Door of Freehold March of 2024. I have the privilege of being part of a wonderful team at Open Door, committed to providing comprehensive support services for people who have a need for food as well as other services that Open Door provides. My personal experience with Open Door has been exceptionally positive, driven by its strong mission statement, excellent location, and outstanding work culture among the volunteers that help to achieve the mission. All of the volunteers are very friendly and supportive of each other, leveraging our individual strengths towards meeting the commitments in helping others in need. My favorite part of the few roles that I take on is getting to meet many of the clients , upon entering Open Door, and getting them to smile/laugh knowing we are here to help them in their time of need. For me personally, this is nothing less than an awesome and rewarding experience.
This food bank has been a great opportunity for the less fortunate to continue receiving food and teens/adults to give back to the community. This has been an absolute pleasure helping and I am more than honored to give back and help the less fortunate. This has provided me with an experience to work with all kinds of people. It has built my cooperation and work ethic skills and overall made me a more well rounded person.
This is a pretty good none-profit to volunteer at. The people in it are extremely nice and they helped me at first when I didn’t know what to do . 10/10 would volunteer here. Also the workload here isn’t that heavy so you don’t need to worry that you’ll break your back doing something here. :)
Words can not express the gratitude I have for Open Door, Erika Woods, the staff and the volunteers !! Not only did this Organization help me with my living situation but they also helped me with future goals. They introduced me to a program through Monmouth County that helped me get back into school. Now I’m a licensed Dental Assistant with a Radiology License. I just started out and I don’t work many hours just yet but with experience the hours will come. They also helped me feed my family. I had NOTHING! I still may not be able to afford life just yet, but thanks to open door and Erika Woods Im hopeful. Thank you! B.P.

Unbeknownst to me, in Freehold on Throckmorton St. is a place called Open Door. For years I have seen this sign and this door and people outside and for years all I thought it was, was a place that fed people when they were hungry. And yes they do help people when they’re hungry! As a matter of fact they helped me when I was starving.
Her name is Erika Woods! She rescued me! I had nothing more to give. I didn’t want my son to know the lights would be shut off and he could no longer study for his future. I didn’t want anyone to know. I had called every government agency in New Jersey for help. No one could help! No one answered. Or I would receive emails stating there weren’t enough funds. Until I spoke to my property manager..another amazing women (Teresa Moffit) and she said go talk to Erika she can help you. Not only did Erika help me, but everyone I spoke to in the church Saint Rosa, Lima Saint Roberts Saint Vincent de Paul spoke highly of her they said, if there is anyone who can help it would be Erika and I kept saying to myself, who is this Erika I know someone with the same exact name. Our kids played football together. It turns out it was the same woman an amazing woman. She didn’t judge me. She spoke calmly. She made me feel calm and she got everything I needed done immediately. She even helped me get job training! She is absolutely gorgeous on the outside! But on the inside if it’s possible even more gorgeous! A heart made of gold. There was so much going on in the open door the day I was there and I even got there after it had closed and she was still willing to speak to me she didn’t turn me away nor did she turn the other people away who were waiting to be fed as well. She runs an amazing program it’s a tight ship and it runs smoothly. There are hundreds of people in and out of there weekly and she makes time for everyone! She knew everyone by there first names. To me that spoke in volume! It was THE most embarrassing time of my life and she made it seem as if it were just like riding a bike to get the Sunday paper. Thank you Erika! Thank you Open Door! And thank you to those who donate because without your help none of what I witnessed would be able to happen! Also thank you to all the volunteers that go to Open Door daily to help. I’m definitely going to donate when I get my new job thanks to Erika I have confidence and I don’t feel alone anymore.

This is my third year of volunteering at the after school program of Freehold Area Open Door. This organization helps so many with food insecurity, but this program works to help school children succeed in their studies and move beyond. Many of the volunteers are retired teachers, and it is such a great pairing of need and talent. Helping students succeed in the all important early stages of their schooling has been so rewarding.
I can't speak highly enough about the incredible work being done by Freehold Area Open Door in Freehold! This organization is an absolute lifeline for so many families facing food insecurity.
The dedication of the staff and volunteers is truly inspiring. They create a welcoming environment that instantly puts people at ease, removing any stigma associated with seeking help. The efficiency of their operation is remarkable. Despite the high demand, they manage to distribute food swiftly and fairly. Whether it's fresh produce, canned goods, or other essential items, the quality is always top-notch.
In short, Freehold Area Open Door is an invaluable asset to the community. Their dedication, efficiency, and compassion make them a shining example of what can be achieved when people come together to help one another. I'm so proud to be associated with this fine organization as they help people in the community.
Freehold Area Open Door… what a great organization to be involved with! The volunteers here range in age from high school students to retirees, and everyone pitches in to do whatever is needed. There is a real sense of community between the volunteers and the clients. Come volunteer with us and be a part of the FAOD family!!
I addition to my role on the Board, I have volunteered with Open Door in several different capacities for many years now. I continue to be impressed with how well run it is, and the quality of the food distributed to clients every day. There is always a wide variety of fresh produce available, in addition to breads, and prepared foods. Clients are also able to come in for a 3 to 5 day emergency supply of groceries, where we custom pack for their households based on a packing list they fill out. It is a very welcoming and friendly environment for clients and volunteers alike.

As both a volunteer and board member, I have watched Open Door evolve over the last decade. During these last four years, under Geralyn's leadership, Open Door is finally realizing its potential. She has worked with local vendors and we now offer a large selection of fresh produce every day. She has expanded the Client Choice Pantry, and clients have a wide variety of healthy options for putting food on the table. She and Erika, our Advocacy Director, have built a delivery program for homebound clients from the ground up. This delivery program feeds both the body and soul, as our drivers take the time to talk to each of the clients on their routes. Erika's Advocacy Program assists more clients than ever. Many clients receive financial help with back rent or overdue utility bills. For other clients, having someone who will take the time to listen is all they need. Alyce, our Pantry Coordinator, manages the daily influx of donations. She and numerous volunteers keep the back area clean and organized. I look forward to more great things to come from our dedicated staff.
Coming to OpenDoor as a intern starting the end of January I did not know what to expect since I always hear mixed reviews about food pantry’s. However since starting here it has completely changed my view on them and all the things they do to support the community! OpenDoor especially makes constant efforts to make sure every client gets the foods they order and make them feel included in the environment. The staff is amazing very welcoming, caring and kind overall an amazing experience
" I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible work Erika Woods does as a social worker and mentor. This is my second semester as Erika’s intern and her commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others is truly commendable. The empathy, compassion, and dedication she brings to her role creates a ripple effect of hope and support that extends far beyond the surface.
Thank you for being beacon of light for those in need and for embodying the values of social work with such grace. Your tireless efforts do not go unnoticed, and they make a meaningful difference in our community".
Have been volunteering at Open Door in Freehold for a few years now. I am constantly amazed by the amount of work involved there. They provide more than food to those in need, they address social needs of our community. 3 awesome women, Erika, Geralyn, and Alyce , make everyone ( volunteers and clients ) feel welcome and respected. I enjoy working there and have met some great people. We feel sad when the shelves are empty and excited when donations come in. So… DONATE … Food and your time!
I love serving at Open Door Food Pantry. The pantry is open 4 days a week and provides healthy choices of food to people in the community. It is a welcoming environment where anyone can access the support they need. Our motto “Be the One” is not only our mantra, but also our guiding principle. Our leadership team, Geralyn, Alyce and Erika, work hard and put in extra time and effort to meet the needs of our clients. Our volunteers, (from Baby Boomers to Gen Z) are motivated and share the work. It is a privilege to connect with people, and to meet the needs of individuals and families who find it hard to put food on their tables.
Open Door is a wonderful program. I have been volunteering here for over two years because it is a caring. committed place that tries to make a difference in the lives of individuals who need help. The staff and all the volunteers do everything they can giving hours of time to prepare for and to pack food for clients. The front staff volunteers respectfully work with the clients to try to meet their needs. The entire atmosphere is one of hope and care. Jackie C.
I am so truly blessed by Erika and Open Door. Honestly every time I get your packages it's like Christmas day. Xoxoxoxoxo Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Xoxoxoxoxo
I did a leadership project for school. I organized a holiday foid drive at Musician's Workshop in Manalapan. The food drive was also at a concert there. Freehold Open Door helped me throughout the whole process. I collected 61 items. I hope to do volunteer work with Freehold Open Door in the future.
I love going to Open Door and seeing the fresh produce available every day. I have added more vegetables in my daily diet, and I feel better. Thank you for everything, and God Bless. Ronda, veggie lover
I've been volunteering at Freehold Area Open Door for the past 6 months, ever since I heard about the good work they do. My friend volunteers at a different food bank and has heard high praise for Open Door. I love the time I spend there. It's a well-run community food pantry, but it also provides other types of assistance, like rental and utility assistance and delivery service for home-bound clients. It's staffed by caring professionals, and the volunteers are just the friendliest people. I look forward to being there every week and really enjoy the time I spend helping them get the job done. It's a very welcoming place for clients and volunteers.
I have been a client at Open Door for a very long time so I know Erika as long as she has been there. She started helping me personally when I became homebound. Now she calls me every month to see how I am doing, and tor arrange for groeries to be delivered. She is such a nice person, very kind and always looking to help in any way she can.
Erika and Nancy are wonderful to work with. The delivery program helps our family every month. Erika always calls to see how we are doing and Nancy takes a special interest in my girls. I am so appreciative of everything they do for me.
My son and I moved here 4 years ago. I had used all of my money to move here for medical reasons. We had no food or any way of getting food at the time. I was given information about Open Door and was placed in the hands of Erika. That was the best thing for me and my son who has special needs. I thank God and Erika along with Open Door for helping us all of this time because we are still in need of help. My son and I thank and bless all of you. From Crystal
I'm so grateful for Walter, Erika and Open Door, you have been a constant in my life. Thank you for the groceries every month, and the food for my dog. He's like my child, and buddy, lol, sometimes the only one I talk with during my days and evenings. Thank you again, it's all greatly appreciated, God bless. from Sheryl
Freehold Area Open Door is a great place to volunteer. I still remember how, on my first day, I was seamlessly integrated into their processes without any real bumps in the road. Ever since, I have always felt welcome there and always love seeing the other volunteers with whom I get to work. Furthermore, I have learned of all the great services that Freehold Area Open Door provides for the community that go beyond merely distributing food (itself a very important task).
I’ve volunteered for FAOD for seven years now and am very proud to do so! This operation provides a vital and often overlooked service for our area, providing food security for many who may not have it otherwise. Keep up the great work and thank you for having me on the team!
The Freehold Area Open Door team has been an amazing partner during our first (of hopefully many) years working with them. Our company Ecosystems visits clients' homes for irrigation winterization services, and we knew that our amazing customers would be on board with giving donations while we were at their homes. We chose Freehold Area Open Door to partner with, and they were so helpful in guiding us through what to do, were excited for us launching this new program, and were so grateful to us all during the drop off. Geralyn, Erika and Alyce were all amazing. It was so nice to meet people so engaged in their work in helping those who need it most. Thank you to everyone for making this an incredibly successful event for my team, and for all you do to help our community!
It's been such an honor working with this organization and seeing firsthand the difference they make in the community.
This is an amazing organization providing food to people who are in need in our community. I have been volunteering at this fine establishment for 35 plus years. The volunteers are not only caring and compassionate but often lend a friendly ear to every single person who walks into our Open Door. Gerrilyn, our director, is always smiling, sweet and kind to all. Alyce is lovely and assists in running Open Door like a well-oiled machine...Everyone at Open Door has become close friends. Open Door runs on pure love! There are no words to explain how exceptionally fantastic this organization is!
Freehold Open Door is an amazing organization that offers a huge year- around support by providing food to the community in need. As a volunteer, I have closely seen the compassion, dedication, and kindness of the staff. Geralyn, Erika, and Alyce go above and beyond the call of duty to cater with dignity to folks in need.
Freehold Open Door does more than assisting people with food insecurity. It provides Birthday presents for children, Thanksgiving Meal packages, Holiday gifts to children, and guidance to those who need it, among other services that are truly needed. It has been my pleasure working with such an exceptional and dedicated group!
I've been volunteering for Open Door since I was in high school. I try to help out whenever i can because it's really a great organization. I've gotten to know some clients and I see how much they appreciate the help Open Door provides. I'm impressed by the amount of donations they receive from food stores, schools, farms and fellow community members. I always enjoy helping with other volunteers, knowing we are doing so much for others because of Open Door!
As a volunteer for this incredible organization I see first hand how they help our community. It goes much further than handing out a couple of bags of food to each client. They have designed a system to provide each client, and their family, exactly what they like and need. Fresh produce, baked goods, shelf stable items and toiletries are all available. They have developed solid relationships with local grocery stores, farms and orchards which enables a wide variety of donations. They work well with the volunteers, creating a warm and functional space. I can’t say enough about how wonderful this organization is and how proud I am to be a part of all the things they do.
very nice people. was honored to volunteer here today. great organization and the helpers seemed very driven with the organization
My service to Open Door is an easy one. Once per month I deliver to those in the area who may be wheelchair bound, bedridden, or just do not have access to a car. It definitely provides a "slice of life" that most of us are not always exposed to. All of the clients that I deliver to always express their gratitude, and as many live alone are happy to share a few words.
The operation at Open Door in itself is incredibly organized and efficient. Many of the items that I deliver have just been picked up from local supermarkets that morning. I arrive to find boxes of dried goods along with bags of refrigerated items for all recipients ready to go. It is just incredible how the internal workers pump it out. It does not happen "magically," but the volunteers are all "magicians!"
It is not only the immediate area of Freehold Borough that benefits, as it generally takes me 40 minutes to get back home (Freehold Twp) upon completion of my deliveries.
“We really loved raising money for the food bank. We know not everyone has food or money to buy food. It felt really good to help people in need. I think we want to do it again next summer.” Danny age 8 and Sam age 5. They hosted a lemonade and cookie stand to raise money, summer 2023.
Excellent organization to work with. They are making such an impressive impact on the surrounding community!
I am a delivery driver for Freehold Open Door and I always have a blast coming into the building and seeing people working and preparing boxes of food. The atmosphere is a wonderful atmosphere of jokes and hard work. The jobs get done while still enjoying and connecting with the people you are doing it. And even cooler we get to impact our own people of Freehold. Love volunteering here!
I have picked up donations from Wegman’s, Shop Rite and Battleview Orchard, and have been an IT tech. These have me a chance to, in effect, see the customer facing interactions and the back office workings of Open Door. Even at its most chaotic times - the major delivery from a regional food bank - items were received and stored quickly by a small army of well coordinated volunteers. I have surreptitiously listened in while working on PCs to the volunteers working with the public, and have seen the above and beyond lengths they go to aid their customers. It is not just food that they give out. They give out recommendations for other services and no cost aid to make life just a little bit easier. Many people are repeat customers, and there is an easy camaraderie between the volunteers and the public. Even when the volunteers have to deny a request and the situation turns stressful the one-on-one dialogue is handled well. This all points back to empathetic training of the nearly all volunteer staff.
The staff and volunteers of Open Door are true angels on earth. Their tireless efforts supply thousands of clients with food, advocacy, and much needed support. Just when you think they can do no more, they surprise me with new ways to support the community.
Open door is a very inviting food bank in Freehold. The staff are lovely including the hardworking volunteers. Open Door provides fresh produce, prepared meals, sweets, and bread four days of the week to the general public. First come -first served. And with a monthly appointment you can pick up about a weeks worth of groceries on the day of your choosing. They also have a terrific social worker who acts as an advocate to help people handle their other living expenses. The people who work at Open Door really try to make the experience as pleasant and rewarding as possible. For those in need it’s a fantastic resource
As a Board member of Freehold Area Open Door, I am extremely proud of the work that is done by our staff and volunteers. Our team is professional and caring. Geralyn, our Director, has expanded the services offered to our clients while Erika and Alyce help meet their needs in an understanding way. All our volunteers are helping those in need and I’m honored to be part of this group.
Long time donor to this outstanding organization. The staff are great people- professional and very client focused. The facility is clean and well organized. Every square inch of their tight space is put to good use to ensure they reach as many people as possible on a daily basis.
I coordinated a food drive with Freehold Area Open Door this summer. This was my first food drive that I ran on my own. The staff was very helpful and welcoming throughout the whole process. My food drive was a success due to their organization and willing to help me through the process. I am organizing my next drive with them. I am looking forward to working with them again.
I first came aware of Freehold Area Open Door when I explained to another individual my desire to help those in need and provide any needed items s to ease their insecurities. Open Door has been an outstanding provider as a food pantry as well as for toiletries, paper goods. Open door helps people apply to government agencies to help with payment of rent, utilities and transportation needs. Open Door also offers after school help and provides scholarships to students that qualify.
Open Door does everything they have the authority to do so that clients are always fulfilled with as much aid as possible.
I liked visiting the food bank with my brownie troop. I learned a lot from Geralyn, the director. The people there are caring because they give food to people who need it. They want them to feel comfortable and even let them pick their own bread and vegetables. Our community is lucky to have a great food bank like this. - Julia U
Open Doir is a wonderful organization, I have been there and I was amazed looking at all the things they do for others. I wanted to organize a food drive and they gave me the tools, I was able to get 118 pounds of food and donated to Open door. I'm 13 years old and what Open Door does inspired me to continue helping people. Mrs. Rivell thank you for your help.

I have been a volunteer and more recently a board member at Open Door for over 5 years. In that time we have renovated our space and enhanced our offerings dramatically. As a result we are serving many more individuals and families from all over the county. We have a dedicated staff who are constantly finding ways to improve our service to the community. Our volunteers do an exceptional job helping our clients in a friendly and caring atmosphere. I encourage anyone interested in giving some of their time to this important work to join our volunteer family. I promise you will find it a fulfilling experience.
This agency quickly partnered with me to coordinate a service project involving 10 middle school and high school students. Staff responded and accommodated our group within a few days of my lodging the request. The students who volunteered enjoyed talking with staff and other regular volunteers from the community. They received a brief orientation and information on clients served and services provided. They enjoyed the variety of activities in which they were engaged; packaging goods for home delivery, organizing the pantry/restocking, assisting with distribution, breaking down cardboard and helping with cleaning. Four hours passed quickly. The atmosphere was positive and filled with respect. Many of the students asked staff if they could return in the future to volunteer on their own time!
I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to volunteer for the Freehold Area Open Door. The volunteers, board members, and staff create a warm and safe environment free of judgment for all of their clients. One of the reasons I enjoy volunteering here is that the clients are treated with respect and dignity which is of utmost importance when one is in a time of need. This nonprofit makes a significant impact on our community and I feel we can see that in the faces of and in the gratitude expressed by the clients every day.
I was lucky enough to become one of the student volunteers at this amazing program. When I was volunteering Erika and Alyce were very kind and helpful, they assisted us right away when we didn't know what to do. Everything was very organized ,and I was amazed to see all the behind the scene work that was done for the families that Open Door helps. I was proud to be a part of such a great organization!
I've been volunteering at open door for a little over a year now, and I can't begin to describe how great of an experience it has been! It is always warm and welcoming, and both the staff and visitors always take notice of the effort you put in. It's like I've become part of a family, even getting my own nickname, "The Pantry Ninja". For whatever reason may lead you here, you can always expect an amazing experience!
I have been a part of Open Door for over 35 years. Only an organization that is doing God's work could keep me working such a long time. Open Door has grown from a small group of volunteers to an organization with several professional employees to guide our cadre of volunteers. Serving clients has always been and remains the priority. And our numbers prove that we are providing what the community needs. I am happy to be part of a community that sees all its members and responds to everyone's needs. Offering a place for volunteers to serve is just as important as offering help to those in need. God bless all who work at and are served by Open Door!
I first became a volunteer at Open Door in 2018. I was not only humbled at the clientele that came through to receive donations - people truly come from all walks of life needing assistance - but I was also humbled and proud to see Open Door’s mission in action.
Open Door started as an interfaith group to help serve the local community; it has since evolved into so much more. It is an oasis where anyone can walk in if they need assistance. Their office - which has been recently renovated - is more conducive to client choice, treating clients with dignity and respect. The staff at Open Door are steadfast in their resolve to make sure everyone that needs assistance walks away knowing that someone cares. Whether it’s feeding their family, helping cover costs of prescription medication, or maybe just a point in the right direction to another agency, Open Door is ready and willing to help.
Everyone at Open Door - the Executive Director, the Advocacy Director, the Pantry Coordinator, and the volunteers - works hard to ensure everyone is met at their level and given resources to help them improve their situation. They are truly making a difference every single day.
I live and work in the community that Open Door serves, and have donated privately and through my church regularly for nearly 20 years. I became involved in a more personal way when the pandemic hit in March of 2020. As a teacher, I found myself suddenly and unexpectedly home for an unforeseen amount of time. I knew that many of my students and their families were facing food insecurity on a level many of them had not experienced before, and I reached out to Open Door to ask how I could help. I became involved in their food delivery service, driving groceries and other necessities to families who cannot come into town to pick up their food. Although I can no longer do this during the school year, I am still able to step in at times when a regular delivery driver is ill or out of town.
The passion and commitment shown by the directors and those who work at Open Door on a regular basis is unmatched. I am so grateful for people who give so unselfishly of their time and resources to serve my community and the surrounding areas. The workers and volunteers are kind, patient, hardworking, and so organized. The regular delivery drivers know the people on their routes, often providing extras, such as treats or books for families with children. When I fill in for a regular driver, the families on my route ask after their "regular", making sure that all is well with them and sending their regards until next time.
It is a privilege and an honor to be able to be a small part of this organization that serves my community so well.
My wife Linda and I are blessed to be among the volunteers who deliver for Open Door in the greater Freehold area on a monthly basis. The experience has been rewarding in many ways! We look forward each month to seeing the people on our route, who consistently express their appreciation for the assistance they receive. The team at Open Door is a dedicated group of compassionate and diligent individuals whose impact reaches deeply into a community of increasing need. We are strong supporters of Freehold Open Door because we have witnessed first-hand the important work they do in our community!
when our family found a new church in the area, we would take part in the various collections that were held to support Freehold Aera Open Door. With life's craziness, work and running around the kids, it felt like an ok thing to do because we were helping our community. Fast forward a couple of years, i am now a representative for our church on the board for FAOD . Life is still crazy but I am now the one who takes the collection to FAOD. I had some time off and decided to spend a day helping out at Open Door. What I witnessed was amazing. Geralyn the Director ,Erika the Advocacy Director and their staff of volunteers treated all there clients with care and respect. they tried to met there needs love and kindness .
My first memory of Open Door was back when I was a student. I had conducted a site visit and I wanted to learn more about what Open Door did for individuals and families. I was amazed at the level selflessness and dedication of the volunteers and staff. Everything was a well-oiled machine. The clients were treated with dignity and respect. This impressed me and made me want to join the team and contribute its mission. I could not see myself anywhere else, putting in energy and effort for change.
Freehold Open Door is a truly exceptional organization that not only provides year-round support to those struggling with food insecurity, but also plays a major role in the largest food drive of the year, Foodstock. I have proudly volunteered with my three daughters for the last two years - as food drop station unloaders, sorters and packers, and as Neighborhood Drop volunteers.
Freehold Open Door's unwavering commitment to the community is inspiring. During the winter holidays, they help facilitate an Adopt-a-Family program where they match needy families with volunteers who purchase gifts from Wish Lists. I have been a part of this amazing program for three years and it is my favorite project of the year.
The staff is incredibly friendly and compassionate, always going above and beyond to make sure everyone is taken care of. Advocacy Director Erika is empathetic and patient, she listens to her clients and really makes them feel understood. Pantry Coordinator Alyce strives to keep the pantry well-stocked and her organization makes it easy to find what is needed. She works closely with all of the Pantry volunteers to keep things running smoothly. Executive Director Geralyn oversees the entire operation, brings in grants and establishes community relationships. All three women are huge assets to Freehold Open Door!
I am so grateful that this resource is located in the heart of Freehold Borough and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a helping hand. Thank you to all of the volunteers and staff who make things possible!
What a great organization! I was so happy my daughter and I were able to help volunteer at their Foodstock event this past Summer. Such a beautiful and fun event to help those in need. Can’t say enough wonderful things about the staff and the amazing things this non profit does for the community. Thank you for all you do!
I've been a volunteer at OD for over 20 years. I've seen it grow from a small community outreach to a necessary and powerful source in our community.
We offer fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared foods and sweets for all. There is also a monthly program where our clients can receive groceries to sustain them until their need returns. It is clean, well run and has friendly volunteers.
Freehold Area Open Door is an amazing organization helping hundred each week. Food pantry, advocacy services, and more. Such helpful volunteers ready to help. I’m so grateful to have a group like this in my town.
Board member
I became a Board member to support this amazing non profit! They serve over 2,000 people a month, right in our backyard! Volunteering is easy, We have so many fun jobs to try. I have tried them all and you end your shift really grateful for these terrific people. I am honored to share that so many of our local food markets contribute food for us to share. Our school partners have also been amazing. Schools are checking our "Immediate Need" lists and responding with incredible generousity. Please join us as we support our neighbors. Remember... "but for the grace of God go I." Thank you in advance!
when I was a novice working with Open Door, I soon learned what an outstanding organization they are. I have always leaned towards helping people who need the help. I learned to be compassionate at a young age from my mom. Open Door exemplifies what I was taught. Their determination and zealousness to help everyone in good times and bad times proves how capable and efficient they are. They give up personal time to seek other organizations and eateries they can partner with. They do NOT discriminate or judge anyone. They only observe the need people have and are struggling with. They insure people receive quality food and personal care products. They change their hours to insure that people who can only come to pick their donations at night still can. The Open Door staff and volunteers want to give people the feeling of hope. They want to provide people viable options so that they don't live in their car. after school children and college bound students have the opportunity to learn and be awarded a scholarship that helps with their expenses. They have partnered with organizations that provides young people the ability to learn how to play an instrument or act & sing in a show. They also want to provide clients opportunities that will make them self-reliant. Open Door staff have skills, experience and talents that makes Open Door a first class organization. Open Door receives my exceeds requirements rating.
Freehold Open Door is a wonderful, dedicated food pantry that services the need of the community with dignity and respect. The quality of the vast amount of items that they offer daily is unchallenged by any other organization that I've encountered. The volunteers are thoughtful, welcoming and knowledgeable and really make the client's experience a happy one.
I was attracted several years ago to the outstanding mission of Open Door, and soon after became a volunteer. I'm so glad I did. You can't beat a warm and friendly staff and atmosphere, combined with the service OD provides for their Freehold Community. it is very very clear to me, the people seeking help from OD not only need this service, but always express how grateful they are. Volunteering at OD, especially around the Thanksgiving season, is just a rewarding and heartwarming experience. I since have joined the board and truly enjoy my time and relationship with OD. If you are considering becoming a volunteer for a cause in the Freehold Community, look no further. Reach out to Geralyn, the Executive Director at Open Door. You won't receive a warmer welcome anywhere!!! OD has a place for you and will welcome your support! God has blessed me with this wonderful opportunity!
I feel very lucky to be a part of FAOD. It is an organization close and dear to me. There is a sense of accomplishment every day that I am there. The Executive Director, Advocacy Director, and Pantry Coordinator are all amazing! There is no judgment. Each client is made to feel special and they are all treated with respect and dignity. I feel a tremendous sense of fulfillment in volunteering at FAOD
FAOD is much more than a food pantry. It is an integral part of the community providing more than food to area clients. Every effort is made by the staff to make sure that each client is heard and advice given. If FAOD is unable to assist they are always available to go the extra step to help find someone or another organization who can.
Open Door is an amazing organization. Not only do they provide food for the food insecure—they offer choice, dignity, and compassion. They also have a social worker who helps with a variety of needs.
Open Door is by far one of the best food pantries in the area. The staff is warm, friendly and always accommodating. The food distributed is of great quality and variety. Not over processed but food that someone one would actually appreciate receiving. Open Door is worthy of 5 stars!
Thank God for Open Door. They have been so generous and kind. There is a vast selection of food, for every dietary need. The facility is immaculately clean and there are so many volunteers. The staff are so professional and compassionate and the social worker on site is so needed, to guide people who need other benefits. People who made good money would never have thought they would be in need of food nor to make the decision to buy food or put gas in their car.
Thank You; Alyce, Geralyn, Erika, Eileen and all the wonderful people who work to feed the hungry. And for Co-Cathedral of Saint Bellarmine Church for their help from parishioners who make food donations after every Mass and their contribution to coordinate food pick-ups.
Erika at Freehold open door was extremely compassionate in my time of being down. She was able to get me some assistance that I needed and never made me feel like less of a person. She talked to me while I sat in the chair across from her with my eyes filled with tears. I was able to leave that day with food to help feed my family and she pointed me in the direction to get assistance with other things. Times can be rough for anyone and every little bit helps. This organization made me realize even more how important it is to give back to those less fortunate when you’re able to. It means so much to have had met Erika and an organization like this. They have the right tools to be able to do their best to get the help needed for what it is a family may be in need of. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart Freehold Open Door and especially you Erika- you do make a difference. You made me smile when I felt I couldn’t.
As someone who has been a part of Open Door’s after school and scholarship programs, this organization has greatly contributed and supported my journey in education. I am very thankful! This organization is amazing and really makes a difference for families who need the extra help. My experience with Open Door really made me realize how lucky I was to have them!
I, Shawn Carroll work as a facilities manager at Heritage Village @ Elton Corner. I really appreciate what open door is doing for the residents here at Elton Corner. We have been working with open door for years and my residents are very appreciative of this program. I give open door a five star rating.
The residents here at Heritage Village @ Elton Corner in Freehold are so very pleased and happy with open door. They have been very kind and generous and our residents really look forward to receiving the deliveries once a month. Your doing a fantastic job and we thank you!!!
This organization is nothing shorter than amazing! Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Open Door and their team of volunteers never turned their backs on the communities in need. They strived to help out where help was needed in many situations that arrised throughout those difficult times. Open Door was and is always there to help out in any and all situations that they could! They remained reliable in all aspects and a pleasure to work with!
Freehold Open Door truly is just that, an open door for others that find themselves needing assistance or help in many aspects of everyday living. Whether that be from the various vendors they recieve food donations from in order to distribute to familys or individuals in need, assist in funding that helps many people/families needs in order to live a sustainable lifestyle. They truly do it all. The countless hours and volunteers that Open Door has spent giving back to the nearby and surrounding communities does not and will never go unnoticed!
On behalf of the staff and residents of the Freehold Housing Authority, we want to give a special Thank You to the employees, friends, and volunteers of Freehold Open Door who always go far above and beyond to help out not only in our small community but in the Freehold community as a whole in making a difference in so many lives! We appreciate everything that has been done for us thus far!
Every service organization should be tended to by people as dedicated and caring as those at Freehold Open Door. I see them working diligently every day to bring the best food and services to each client. And what an amazing array of quality food! By the generosity (and work) of the partners at Trader Joe's, Wawa, Wegman's, etc., they are able to provide fresh produce, bread, dairy, baked goods and meat to those in need. It is no small feat to plan, receive, inventory and distribute the food to many clients everyday. And food is not all they do; directing clients to services and providing support, funding and follow through is another aspect provided to our neighbors in perilous situations. It is done by competent, well trained staff with compassion and efficiency while assuring donors that the funds are being used wisely.
When the pandemic hit, they remained true to their name and kept an Open Door for all that found themselves in a situation they did not create. The organization went into overdrive finding food and sundries when supply lines were shut down. Staff and volunteers put themselves at risk to manage long lines for those in need. We were exceedingly lucky that the people at Open Door were calm and collected when the world brought chaos to our community.
I am so proud of the Freehold Area Open Door organization. I feel a tremendous sense of community when I volunteer and hope more people get the opportunity to be a part of this endeavor.
Open Door has been making monthly deliveries for our Easterseals NJ house, which are always appreciated by and helpful to our clients. Nick and Doreen are always great with keeping the our clients and their needs in mind. Open Door has provided food/meals to our clients who might otherwise have financial and other difficulties when trying to get access to food. We are grateful for all Open Door does!
OpenDoor is very generous with donations of food for our clients at Easterseals monthly. They are accommodating to our specific needs and keeps up with the clients. We are grateful for this organization for all it does to support our clients who are unable to purchase meals due to financial issues. All of our clients are pleased by their continuous care.
As a partner agency to Open Door, I can say on behalf of our team that it is always a pleasure working with them - they are a trusted spot in the community, going above and beyond to meet the needs of those served. I admire that Open Door strives to make sure EVERYONE that needs groceries is able to receive them. In addition, the staff and volunteers keep the door open to partners like us, as we sometimes have leftover food or groceries from our events and would like to see it go to use instead of being wasted. There are countless times when Open Door made themselves available and made space to take donations from us, which assured me that these items would make their way to an individual or family in need. At other times, Open Door has offered their surplus to us if they think that we could use it. They are always willing to work together, collaborate, and share resources, and Freehold is lucky to have this pillar in the community!
As someone who volunteers with many organizations, I rate this as one of my favorites. It is a well organized and effective organization. Delivering not only food but necessary supplies to those that need some extra help. If that was all they did, I would still rate them with 5 stars, BUT they are so much more. Their clients are family, each with their own stories, their own needs, their own likes and dislikes. Treating people like family, giving them a voice, making them feel relevant can be more important than the physical sustenance Open Door provides. Everyone at Open Door knows that there are real people at the other end of the giving. More importantly, they make the people at the other end of the giving know it too!
