Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Education, Undergraduate Colleges

Mission: Franklin & marshall college is a residential college dedicated to excellence in undergraduate liberal arts education. Its aims are to inspire in young people of high promise and diverse backgrounds a genuine and enduring love for learning, to teach them to read, write, and think critically, to instill in them the capacity for both independent and collaborative action, and to educate them to explore and understand the natural, social, and cultural worlds in which they live. In so doing, the college seeks to foster in its students qualities of intellect, creativity, and character, that they may live fulfilling lives and contribute meaningfully to their occupations, their communities, and their world.

Programs: Instruction: the college grants bachelor of arts degrees in 43 fields of study, with a full-time equivalent undergraduate enrollment of 2350 students during the 2017 academic year. The college offers an integrated learning environment where students engage the values of the liberal arts both through the curriculum and in their lives outside the formal classroom. Our current student to faculty ratio is 9 students to every 1 faculty member and approximately 40% of our students work one-on-one with a faculty member on a for-credit project. Within six months following graduation, 79% of the class of 2017 was employed and 19% was pursuing further education.

financial aid: the college's strategic plan includes a commitment to recruit extraordinary student talent. To that end, the college provides need-based financial aid to over 50% of our students, meeting 100% of these students' institutionally determined financial need for all four years on campus. F&m's innovative talent strategy and ongoing commitment to growing its financial aid budget has enabled the college to recruit the best students from across the us and around the world. The class of 2020 is among the most academically exceptional and diverse classes in f&m's history. Hailing from 31 states and 21 countries, they boast an average sat of 1306 and an average act score of 30. Approximately 23% are domestic students of color, 22% are first-generation college students, 19% are eligible for federal pell grants, and 17% are international students.

student services: the college is recognized for providing a highly regarded and innovative post graduate and student success service as well as a state of the art student wellness service. The college's unique college house system provides students with an integrated living and learning experience. The college also offers more than 115 active student clubs, 27 varsity sports, a greek life system, its own art museum, club and intramural sports teams, and abundant volunteer opportunities to complement our students' academic pursuits. The college has been recognized on several occasions by membership in the president's community service honor roll nationally. Approximately three-fourths of students participate in some form of community service, and more than one in four contribute 20 or more hours per semester. We estimated a total of 52,600 total hours of service in 2016-17. Signature programs include the volunteer income tax assistance program, squash aces, and f&m works.
