Mission: Franciscan Outreach Association has four programs: an emergency overnight shelter for homeless adults, a free dining room for the poor and homeless, a case management program in which trained case managers help the homeless and poor find the social services they need to create a better life for themselves, and a lay volunteer program through which volunteers can work directly with the poor and homeless full time in exchange for room and board and a small stipend. We were founded in 1963 by Fr. Phil Marquard, OFM, and incorporated in 1976. We''ve had various programs over the years, each of which provided basic services to the poor and homeless. Our vision is to provide the poor and homeless with the basic necessities they need to survive from day to day and help them find the specialized services they need to change their lives for the better. We treat our guests with respect and dignity because they are our brothers and sisters, in the spirit of Jesus Christ and St. Francis of Assisi.
Programs: Our emergency overnight shelter is Franciscan House of Mary & Joseph, a 246 bed shelter for adult men and women. We serve up to 209 men and 37 women and are open year round. We give our guests the opportunity to meet with a case manager, supper of soup and a sandwich, a bed with linens, blanket, and a pillow, the chance to shower, breakfast, visits by medical personnel, and a mailing address. Our South Dorm Program provides our regular guests with a reserved bed and a locker in which to store their belongings during the day. Our Transitional Workers Program gives 10 guests work experience and the opportunity to develop work experience and references.
I have been associated as a lawyer volunteer with Franciscan Outreach Association in Chicago for several years. They do a fantastic job helping the homeless in Chicago, providing overnight shelter, food, clothing, medical care and other care. I have given legal help to the homeless there at no charge. They deserve your financial support especially in this bad economy.
