Mission: To provide compassionate care and education to children with special health care needs to help them reach their full potential. To create a pediatric center for children with special needs, that is a nationally and internationally recognized model, leader and advocate of care.
Target demographics: Today we serve 15,000 children each year with a wide variety of medical, mental health, and educational needs. We treat children and adolescents with a range of physical, mental, and behavioral difficulties, many of whom are dually diagnosed with multiple medical complexities. Some of our children received a spinal cord injury in a car accident, and to learn how to walk and talk again. Others are born with chronic health needs like spina bifida and cerebral palsy, and attend day school on campus. Infants born addicted to drugs are slowly weaned under the careful supervision of doctors and nurses. We have lots of teens who have been sexually abused or have severe depression, and we try to help them overcome their trauma. We operate a unit in conjunction with McLean Hospital for children who have survived a suicide attempt. Some of our children have long term health issues and some are recovering from devastating injury. While some have made remarkable progress, there are others for whom life will never be the way most of us know it.
