Causes: Human Services, Seniors, Supportive Housing for Older Adults
Mission: Foxdale village is a not-for-profit quaker-directed continuing care retirement community. Through community services and programs, foxdale provides for the social, spiritual, nutritional, residential, wellness and health care needs of older people at reasonable cost while providing a supportive working environment for employees. Our community is based on quaker values and quaker conviction that all people are to be treated with dignity and loving respect.
Programs: Foxdale village has been caring for people for over 27 years. Over these years foxdale has continued to enable residents to enjoy the highest levels of independence and wellness possible. Foxdale is an intellectually and socially vibrant community which residents help to shape and form through their active service on over 50 resident association committees. Foxdale provides a safe, secure home and healthcare as appropriate to the circumstances of each individual served. Our residents and our campus -- in the 2017 fiscal year, foxdale served 375 residents and their families while employing over 125 full-time and another 125 part time/casual staff. The majority of foxdale residents live in residential living, in on-campus apartments and cottage homes, with the peace of mind that personal care and skilled nursing care, including memory care, are available if needed on a short-term or permanent basis. Foxdale has 205 apartment and cottage units, 46 licensed skilled nursing private rooms and 55 private personal care rooms. Strong financial position -- from a financial perspective, foxdale is in a very strong position. Foxdale has maintained a positive increase in cash from operations and investments despite issues in the greater economy. Foxdale had over 500 days cash on hand as of june 30, 2017, exceeding the industry-wide standard by a significant margin. Thanks to prudent fiscal management coupled with an ongoing commitment to socially responsible investing, foxdale was able to continue to invest in ongoing infrastructure improvements even during its expansion. Our valued workforce -- foxdale's workforce encompasses staff working in maintenance, housekeeping, administration, safety, healthcare, and dining services. Foxdale offers an exceptional benefits program for employees, including funding for professional development. Support for professional development is included in the annual budget and made available via the training and tuition reimbursement fund (which was established by anonymous donors). In the 2017 fiscal year, $116,000 in grants was awarded to staff from the training & tuition fund. Staff also have access to wellness programs, exercise equipment, and health screenings. Philanthropic support directed to the givers of care fund provides access to no-interest loans to staff facing short-term or housing needs. Caring philanthropic community -- as a 501(c)(3) foxdale residents and staff have benefitted greatly from philanthropy which donors have generously directed to foxdale. Thanks to countless gifts given since foxdale's founding, residents and their families can rest assured that care will continue should financial challenges impede a resident's ability to fulfill their financial obligation to foxdale. In fiscal year 2017, the community fund provided $138,000 in assistance to residents. Donors that contributed to the healing waters therapy pool campaign, foxdale's first-ever capital campaign, pledged and/or contributed over $1 million to the project in just six months. Thanks to their generosity, therapy pool construction commenced in april of 2015 and was completed in november of 2015. Caring at foxdale doesn't end at our doorstep. Foxdale provided meeting and event space at no cost to multiple nonprofit organizations, contributed over $25,000 to local nonprofits in fiscal year 2017, hosted intergenerational programs, and provided learning opportunities to interns and other aspiring health care professionals. Residents and staff enthusiastically engage in an array of volunteer and philanthropic activities, including a staff food drive in december 2016 which resulted in contribution of nearly one ton of food to the state college area food bank. Caring for the environment -- foxdale has maintained its commitment to the quaker principle of stewardship of the earth while ensuring sound fiscal management. As a result of the expansion and renovation foxdale has 2,900 led light fixtures and a geothermal system that heats and cools almost 90,000 square feet of living space. Additionally, the power for all of foxdale is contracted from wind-power providers. We are very proud that foxdale was one of only three organizations to be the first recipients of the emerald award from the centre county recycling authority in recognition of its on-campus recycling activity. Foxdale has also been on the forefront of food waste composting, collaborating with the borough of state college to lower the amount of such waste that enters landfills. Recognitions -- thanks to the exemplary efforts of our dedicated staff, in 2013 through 2017 foxdale was voted best retirement community by readers of state college magazine. Foxdale was previously recognized as a pollinator friendly campus and with tree city awards. To ensure provision of ongoing high quality service to residents foxdale participates in various quality improvement programs with its sister communities through the peace church compliance and risk management programs. Foxdale's neighborhoods and beautiful grounds, opportunities for intellectual engagement, focus on wellness, and commitment to sustainability are just a few of the reasons residents and others highly rate foxdale.
