I've been associated with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award since 1991, when I first experienced internal examiner training at the corporation where I worked. Since then I've served as examiner, senior examiner, and now master examiner for the national program. I served three years as a Judge for the program, beginning in 2003, and I returned as a senior examiner. I've served as examiner, judge, board chair for several of the Baldrige-based state and regional programs. I also serve as a technical editor for the national program and several state programs. All of this work is done as a volunteer. Why? Because I'm passionate about the Baldrige Excellence Framework and its power to inform leaders of any type, any size organization. I have an MBA and was a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt for five years. Nothing I was ever exposed to in those programs was as holistic, non-prescriptive, with a health balance between processes and results. The Baldrige "community" is a generous community where every member values learning and sharing. The Baldrige Award isn't about beating other organizations to earn the prize. It's about competing against a standard of excellence where an unlimited number of organizations can "win." I appreciate the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for its commitment to increasing the visibility and use of the Baldrige Excellence Framework. American can only be better for it!
I first learned about the Malcolm Baldridge award working for General Electric, Boeing, and Hewlett Packard many years ago. Then as a college professor, teaching at the graduate school of school of business and economics at the University of New Hampshire, I learned more about the contributions of the Foundation and its awards promoting efficiency and quality in education, healthcare, and industry.
The Foundation, as a central authority on what are perhaps the two most important dimensions of operational performance - quality and efficiency, has been an important resource helping so many organizations across the globe continuously improve their performance.

When I decided to lead a revitalization effort, to save our state quality program, Josh Racette, from the Baldrige Foundation, picked up the phone and asked, " How can I help?". He listened and provided contacts, strategies and inspiration not to give up. And he did more than that, he zoomed into our weekly 7:30 am coalition meetings until we were on our feet. The support I personally felt and received from Josh was a powerful; that people at the national level, at the Baldrige Foundation, truly and sincerely cared about us at the state level. Having national support from the Foundation and the Alliance meant the world to me. Our state program is on the road to recovery and our relationship with the Baldrige Foundation is stronger than it has ever been. I have been associated with the Baldrige Program and Criteria for over 30 years and highly recommend the foundation. The Foundation has been instrumental in organizational improvements in a variety of industries. By helping organizations improve, the Baldrige Foundation protects the jobs of the organization.
