Mission: Funding and publicizing research that determines the scientific basis and value of services intended to optimize physical functioning by physical therapists and developing the next generation of physical therapist researchers.
Programs: Scientific research/grants: the foundation is dedicated to the goal of improving the quality and delivery of patient care. The foundation accomplishes this by providing grant support to emerging investigators to promote scientifically based and clinically relevant research related to the effectiveness of physical therapist practice. The foundation for physical therapy continues to support the many researchers around the country who are now developing new treatments and approaches in many arenas, including: orthopedics, geriatrics, pediatrics, neurology, chronic conditions, and cardiology. The foundation has developed and funded a "center of excellence" for health services/health policy research and training, directing $500,000 in support of the grant during 2017. In addition, $271,750 in research grants were awarded.
educational: in 2017, the foundation awarded $355,000 in scholarships and fellowships including three, 1-year, $5,000 scholarships to support physical therapists or physical therapist assistants in their first year of a post-professional doctoral degree program. As part of its post-professional doctoral opportunities, the foundation awarded ten $7,500 promotion of doctoral studies (pods i) scholarships, eleven $15,000 promotion of doctoral studies (pods ii) scholarships, and a 2 year- $100,000 new investigator fellowship training initiative (nifti). The nifti provides a mentored research experience for post-professional, doctorally prepared researchers.
awareness: the foundation strives to raise awareness of a wide range of phyiscal therapy research areas and its vital role for practicing physical therapists which results in advanceing healthcare and optimizing movement of patients and individuals across all age and disease spectrums.
