Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Community Improvement & Capacity Building, Philanthropy, Philanthropy, Charity & Voluntarism Promotion, Public Foundations

Mission: Foundation Beyond Belief is a humanist charity that promotes secular volunteering and responsible charitable giving. Guided by the principles of secular humanism, our mission is to unite the humanist community in volunteering and charitable efforts, and advocate for compassionate action throughout the world. We forward our mission through these programs: Giving: providing an avenue for humanists to regularly give to highly qualified and vetted charities in a number of cause areas Volunteering: supporting secular groups in doing service activities in their local communities with our Beyond Belief Network Service Corps: An international volunteering program supporting and strengthening local, well-established nonprofits to improve lives. Disaster Response: providing humanists an avenue to donate to a qualified and vetted charity in the event of a disaster and sending volunteers out to help rebuild after a disaster strikes. In short, Foundation Beyond Belief is humanity at work.

Results: Since our launch in 2010, our members and supporters have donated over $2 million to organizations working to improve the world. We have funded education in Cambodia, Pakistan, Uganda, India, the United States, and nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa, improved access to health care for marginalized populations on four continents, and supported populations at risk after disasters both natural and human in their origins. We've supported efforts to fight global warming and protect biodiversity. We've helped open a new school for girls in Pakistan and funded a four-year college scholarship for indigenous Guatemalans. We've added humanist voices and dollars to the fight for LGBT rights, empowered adoptions, helped feed the hungry, and worked to protect the most vulnerable - refugees in war, victims of torture, women under threat of violence, political asylees, people struggling with addiction, and those seeking dignity at the end of their lives. Through our Challenge the Gap program, we seek the best expressions of non-secular worldviews and have funded effective, non-proselytizing charities based in all five major world religions. Our Beyond Belief Network has put humanist compassion to work with over 100,000 volunteer hours in 120 cities across the US, from AIDS hospices and food pantries to blood drives and environmental protection projects. And we've raised over $1,000,000 to fight blood cancers through the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. There's no supernatural power to make this world a better place. It's up to us. Foundation Beyond Belief is humanity at work.

I first was introduced to Foundation Beyond Belief at a humanist conference in Chicago. The organization that I was then working for was being recognized as a great humanist charity, so I flew to Chicago as one of the representatives. Since then, I have been following FBB's work, been a donor, and have volunteered myself to be placed on their Disaster Relief project. I have watched over the years as the organization has supported and brought to the spotlight many great philanthropy organizations, globally, which do outstanding work in the sector. FBB has made such a great impact for the charities they feature and give grants to, as well as allowing their donors to specify which organization they would like to support. This platform of giving grants and featuring global humanist charities who do amazing work in education, human rights, food insecurity, etc., have made an enormous impact on those lives for which each organization supports and changes. I cannot say enough great things about FBB. Knowing the team and watching how they change the world has been influential, to say the least.

I absolutely love the work of Foundation Beyond Belief since they take the ideas espoused in humanist philosophy (compassion, human accountability, social responsibility) and apply them as praxis.

From their disaster recovery to their community volunteering and charitable fundraising,
FBB's work is an important and model representation of what humanism is all about: doing good merely for goodness sake!

For more than a year, I have been concerned that FBB has diverged from its original mission to "demonstrate humanism at its best by supporting efforts to improve this world and this life, and to challenge humanists to embody the highest principles of humanism, including mutual care and responsibility." Instead, FBB has turned into a faddish "social justice" organization. The selection of charitable organizations has reflected this transition and has since been confirmed by a recent FBB email and survey:

"One of the areas where FBB seeks to emphasize the importance of humanist action in 2017 is social justice....

In 2017, we hope to see Beyond Belief Network teams and humanists everywhere standing up for racial equality."

I stopped donating some time ago because the charitable selections were based upon gender (exclusively targeting women/girls), sexuality (LGBT, trans-gendered), faddish non-humanist causes (Lakota language preservation) and other ephemeral "social justice" causes. Instead of focusing on human suffering (suicide prevention, drug overdose epidemic, etc) "social justice" charitable organizations now dominate the FBB grant awardees. My conclusion remains correct now that FBB has confirmed it is a "social justice" political organization.

My advice to anyone donating to FBB is to review the listed charities and recognize the diversion from the original mission and purpose. Chose your own charities and donate to them directly instead.

I've supported and worked with Foundation Beyond Belief since its inception. The board and staff are laser-focused on the vision of a world in which the humanist community is united in charitable and compassionate work. The initiatives and programs of FBB are precisely what I would want to see in any similar organization; that it also demonstrates strong humanist leadership is a much-appreciated benefit.

Before I discovered FBB I had wished an organization like FBB existed. FBB works tirelessly to put humanist values into action giving humanists, and others who support the ideals, an avenue to donate their time, money, and expertise toward making the world a more equal and just place. FBB has high standards for support seeking out organizations and people to support based on evidence based work and compassion. I have confidence that my donations are being used effectively and in the spirit of humanism.

FBB offers humanists the ability to help others through volunteerism and/or charitable giving in a way consistent with humanist values. I am proud to be associated with this great organization that is helping causes as varied as accused witches in Ghana, native language initiatives in the US, fundraising for disaster recovery in the US and abroad, LGBT groups such as Audre Lorde Project and Transgender Law Center, and many others. Due to their careful and thorough vetting process, I am confident my donations are being used wisely. HIghly recommended.

Foundation Beyond Belief is a wonderful charity and definitely one worth your hard-earned dollars.

I personally know the staff of this organization. They are highly dedicated to the organization's mission and work tirelessly to push that mission forward.

FBB has a few different programs. One of my favorites is the Humanist Service Corps, currently working to improve and save lives in Ghana. The Humanist Giving program provides grants to different highly vetted charity beneficiaries every quarter, providing a valuable avenue for humanists and other non-religious donors to donate money regularly to a variety of worthwhile charities.

If you aren't up for donating money, FBB provides a number of ways to volunteer. I won't go into more detail, but suffice it to say that there will be a way to donate or volunteer that matches what you can give of your money or time.

I personally donate on a monthly basis to both Humanist Service Corps and Humanist Giving. When FBB runs a Humanist Disaster Recover Drive, I donate to that, too.
