Programs: Thurgood marshall leadership academy (tmla) is a charter school of the fort wayne urban league and is managed by american quality schools (aqs). Aqs schools are college preparatory and use core knowledge curriculum to promote and equip young men and women with the knowledge, skills and social judgment needed to face the challenges of a complex global economy. A central purpose of core knowledge is to bring both equity and excellence to schooling through a carefully designed curriculum. Tmla curriculum emphasizes social justice through a rigorous liberal arts education and project-based learning. Classes include kindergarten through 8th grade with a total of 115 students.
education and youth services: in 2016-2017, 427 students were served through the after school programming. The summer program averaged 77 students per day over 8 weeks where they were provided with daily activities such as, remediation, computer training, college prep 101, architecture, planned parenthood, aids task force, urban teen readers, creative writing, robotics, financial education and empowering camp programs. There were 244 students enrolled in project ready, the college readiness initiative. 100% of the students have an individual career development plan. The average gpa for an active project ready student is above 3. 0. Read and rise continued to help parents become their children's first and best teachers. In 2016-2017, 160 parents and 253 children were served with 325 home visits and 974 books distributed.
employment and training: in 2016-2017, our employment and training program continued offering bi-weekly pre-employment workshops on interviewing skills, resume writing, soft skills, job search, and placement. We did job assessment for 420 individuals. We provided workshops for 132 people, gave 278 job referrals and successfully placed 79 clients in full time positions with average pay of 13. 00 per hour providing a community financial impact of 2. 1 million. We placed 32 youth on jobs through the urban youth empowerment program. We conducted a job fair with 13 employers and 300 job seekers participated.
as a hud-certified housing counseling agency, we continued to counsel clients in taking the right steps to avoid foreclosure, purchasing a home and money management. In 2016-2017, this program provided 785 services through housing counseling and educational workshops. Out of 785 services we helped 359 clients with resolving or preventing mortgage delinquency, 74 clients resolved their mortgage delinquency which provided a community positive impact of almost 6 million (average cost per foreclosure 79,445 per home).
