Mission: Fort Mason Center engages and connects people with arts and culture on a historic waterfront campus. We inspire and foster creativity by providing a vibrant gathering place and a home for thought-provoking programs, events, and organizations.
Results: Since 1977, Fort Mason Center has relied on the financial generosity and friendship of individuals, government agencies, corporations, and foundations to support our mission of connecting people to arts and culture. Over two million visitors of all ages and backgrounds attend performances, classes, and events on the campus. Art, music, dance, food, literature, and media are discovered and nurtured at over 15,000 events. People from all walks of life come together for work, discussion, education and entertainment on this historic waterfront campus serving the San Francisco Bay Area.
Programs: First established as a nonprofit cultural center in 1977, fort mason center has long been host to a lively mix of arts, educational and cultural programming on san francisco's northern waterfront. Each year, fort mason center provides over $2. 4 million in support to local arts organizations, enabling groups to produce diverse and innovative art works at the historic waterfront campus. With a nearly four-decade history as an arts and culture destination, fort mason center is now focused on reinvigorating its programming and amenities to better serve and engage the evolving and dynamic bay area creative community. Central to this new vision is the commissioning and presentation of adventurous and unconventional art works best realized in nontraditional or historic settings. In fiscal year 2014, over 1. 6 million visitors participated in more than 10,000 events at fmc. Visitors enjoy large annual events, classes, seminars, and conferences that reflect the range of bay area culture. Fmc's six theaters host hundreds of dance, theater, musical events, and conferences each year. Since 2012, fmc has sponsored "fort mason center presents. " this is a performing arts series, held on site, in which the center awards cash grants and in-kind support to performing arts groups. In addition to performing arts productions, the center hosts a large variety of cultural events including crafts exhibitions, visual art exhibitions, current affairs lectures and business conferences.
through its resident program, fmc provides long-term space to over 20 non-profit and arts organizations at significantly reduced prices. These low-cost leases allow the community serving arts organization to focus on producing their artistic programs instead of searching for an affordable home amidst a booming local real estate market. Current resident nonprofit organizations occupy approximately 87,000 square feet and include: bats improve, blue bear school of music, readers bookstore (operated by friends of the public library), california lawyers for the arts, san francisco children's art center, city college of san francisco art campus, greens restaurant (operated by the zen center), the kabouter foundation, lily cai chinese dance company, the long now foundation, magic theatre, off the grid, on the commons, environmental traveling companions, the mexican museum, seedling projects, sfmoma artists gallery, museo italo americano, young performers theatre, and world arts west.
