Mission: To protect national forests and to reform the u. S. Forest service by advocating for environmental ethics, educating citizens, and defending whistleblowers.
Programs: Public education: published and distributed 20,000 print copies of forest news, a newsletter promoting public awareness of public land issues and environmental resources on national forests. Emailed newsletter to more than 35,000 usda employees and 5000 general members of the public three times during the year. Employed social media outlets and the fseee website to educate members and the general public about issues affecting public lands. Provided guidance and support to members of the public concerned about national forest management issues across the country. Communicated with numerous media outlets about public land issues. Promoted our educational documentary film, seeing the forest, and made the video available online for free streaming.
forest protection and whistleblowing: prepared and submitted detailed written comments on numerous proposed national forest projects including road decommissioning, off-highway vehicle planning, wildlife habitat improvement, forest thinning, wildlife protection, wildfire management, livestock grazing and oil and gas leasing. Mobilized fseee members and the public to write and call congressional representatives regarding proposed legislation affecting the management of public lands. Issued action alerts asking our membership to contact their congressional representatives, senators and forest service leadership to combat proposed legislation designed to weaken or remove key environmental protection laws. (see schedule o) provided guidance and legal support to forest service employees and volunteers to protect their free speech rights, professional integrity, and ethics. Provided information and resources for conflict resolution. Raised awareness of whistleblower rights on our website. Pursued legal action with the goal of requiring the forest service to develop and follow plans and guidelines regarding firefighting on public lands.
membership services: deployed a variety of strategies to increase public awareness of fseee and its activities both at public events and through online engagement including email updates highlighting current national forest news, action alerts by both email and postal mailings, outreach though the fseee website, and the use of social media.
