Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Education, Educational Services, Wildlife Sanctuaries

Mission: Forest Animal Rescue by Peace River Refuge & Ranch, founded in 1998, grew out of the need to find lifetime care for the ever-increasing number of wild animals in captivity living in substandard conditions or victims of misguided attempts to make them into pets. Forest Animal Rescue is comprised of volunteers who assist in the rescue of non-releasable wild animals throughout the United States and are dedicated to their lifetime care. We participate in nationwide networking of accredited sanctuaries, assisting authorities in locating qualified sanctuaries in other parts of the country. Additionally, a great deal of our efforts are directed toward educating the public about the issues surrounding wild animals in captivity as well as their wild counterparts. Our ultimate goal is to avoid the need to have wild animal sanctuaries by educating people on the complicated social and physical needs of these animals and teaching appreciation of the animals in their native environment.

Results: Over 100 non-releasable wild animals are receiving lifetime care at the sanctuary

Target demographics: stop the cruelty that wild animals endure in captivity

Direct beneficiaries per year: over 130 animals with lifetime care

Geographic areas served: the United States

Programs: Rescued animals at Forest Animal Rescue are provided with high quality care in a safe, peaceful environment. Through a strong international internship and volunteer program, students in the field of animal conservation learn ways to properly care for wild animals in a safe and humane manner. During their participation in our programs, they gain firsthand experience in ways to provide the animals with high quality and enriching lifetime care. Through public speaking, semi-monthly guided educational tours of the sanctuary and other community outreach programs, Forest Animal Rescue inspires others to help break the pattern of indifference toward the living creatures we share this planet with.

Forest Animal Rescue is a beacon of light and a true model of how our Nation should interact with wildlife. I was an intern at Forest Animal Rescue for 9 months. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I wanted to gain experience working with animals, particularly wildlife to help make a decision on what career path I wanted to take. I made life long friends and learned so much while I was there. The work they are doing for these animals is amazing. The animals are rescued from terrible conditions and given a place where they can be at peace. It is a true sanctuary for these animals. If you have the opportunity to visit, volunteer or donate to their work please do!

I spent some time volunteering with this organization when they were in Zolfo Springs. I cannot say enough about the incredible dedication Kurt and Lisa have for these animals. The new location in the forest I had gotten to visit in its early stages and I was blown away. Amazing people doing amazing things! The animals they rescue are so well cared for and they all of their stories.

Absolutely LOVE this place. I wish I lived closer to volunteer and help out more often. I volunteered here for 6 weeks in the summer of 2010 and had an INCREDIBLE time. Not only are Kurt and Lisa Stoner fantastic people with hearts of gold, I met a lot of fellow volunteers who have become some of my greatest friends. The animals have such incredible stories and are so lucky to call Peace River Refuge their permanent home. I HIGHLY recommend volunteering with this organization if you can. With their big move, they need the help! They will take great care of you and provide you with once in a lifetime experience!

I operate a Big Cat Sanctuary in Eureka Springs, AR. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge and have worked with Kirt and lisa Stoner on a couple of projects, Forest Animal Rescue by Peace River Refuge and Ranch took some of the Tigers and a couple of bear when we took over a breeding, dealing, cub petting park in Colorado in 2016. The animals have done great under their care. They are loving their lives in Florida. We rescued 2 tigers in 2020 from Florida that were involved in a lawsuit with PETA and we were named the receivers and Lisa and Kirt brought out their staff and interns to help us load the tigers once sedated. Lisa is on our Finance Committee for the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance and she has done a great job helping us with grant prospects.

I had the great fortune of meeting Lisa and Kurt. I watched their movie about their relocation to larger spaces. I was stunned by the extra lengths they went to ensure that the animals were treated with great kindness and safety. Their organization is wonderful and is now my charity effort of choice. may all luck and fortune land with them.

They traveled all the way to Northern NY from Florida to rescue two female Black Bears from a closed Theme Park. If they had not the bears would have been put down. Molly and Dolly lived many years with them in a natural habitat with the best of care and all a bear could wish for. They kept people updated on their lives which for the locals who tried our best to care for them after the park closed meant a lot

Forest Animal Rescue's mission has been to provide a sanctuary for rescued wildlife that cannot be returned to the wild. They receive no funds from any state or federal entity, supporting their work with volunteers ad donations from supporters. They have relocated once despite the cost as it was detrimental to the animals to remain where they were. They have weathered storm damage and other vicissitudes and come back stronger.
I have been a monthly donor for several years now and I could not imagine a better use of that money.

I met Lisa and Kurt 20 years ago and visited them in Zolpho Springs where they had their sanctuary. My partner and I adopted a horse from them who had gone through one of our notorious hurricanes. I have seen their love for the animals, but almost more importantly I have seen the work they have done so fearlessly for the animals. I have chosen to support them because they know they are making a difference every day for these animals. I love them both and respect them even more.

I have just come back home to the UK from volunteering at FAR for 4 weeks and loved every second of it! Kurt, Lisa and Miranda are extremely compassionate about the animals under their care and work extremely hard for their animals. They were all very friendly, helpful and welcoming and would always point me in the right direction if I was unsure about something. I loved all of the animals at the sanctuary, there were some right characters there (like Rebel, Chief and Roy). I loved working with each and everyone. Unfortunately I was there for the passing of Timber the wolf but I know that everything that could have been done for her was done - a very sad time. The sanctuary itself is very well maintained with very good facilities and is kept very tidy. The enclosures for the animals were perfect because they had plenty of open space and the enclosures themselves were well maintained. The two interns that I worked with were fantastic and showed me the best places to eat in Ocala!! I stayed in the male intern house which was great and only five minutes away from the sanctuary. I really hope I can go back and do it all again in the future!!

This is such an amazing place! This is a real sanctuary run by people who LOVE these (and ALL) animals! These animals have been truly rescued and now can live out their lives stress free in nurturing environments that they deserve. Without people like Lisa and Kurt these, and other animals, would be bred for fur, enjoyment, as personal pets and otherwise miserable lives. They are true to the animals and true to their hearts. These wild animals that had not been able to live their lives correctly, because of humans, now are in a true sanctuary living as happy as they could possibly be. Hearing where these animals were rescued from and then seeing how they are living and behaving now, stress free, brought tears of joy to my eyes and through my heart. Kurt and Lisa are inspiring on such a deep level. If only everyone had a fraction of their compassion, sanctuaries wouldn't even be needed. I am thankful for their compassion and love of animals and they truly make a difference in the world for animals that have had lives ruined by humans, until being rescued by the sanctuary.

I have worked as a volunteer with Lisa and Kurt and their extremely competent staff for some 20 years as their veterinarian.
In my veterinary career I have had the opportunity to see a large cross section of animal facilities and sanctuary’s all around the country and have never seen one better run and more focused on what’s really important for the well being of the animals.
I have nothing but the utmost respect and praise for them and a really “true” sanctuary.. they do not put fund raising above the well being of their animals as so often is the case. If you would like to support animal sanctuaries and share that goal, this is the one that I strongly recommend supporting!!

I am a veterinarian. I've known Lisa and Kurt for about a dozen years. I have shared so many good experiences with them at the sanctuary that I don't know where to begin. There is nobody more conscientious, dedicated, or capable than this couple to care for the many animals entrusted to their care after coming from bazaar, abnormal, or abusive situations. I think my most memorable experience was even the most recent project where they received four tigers and two bears from a sanctuary that had been shut down in Colorado. I agreed to be present for the arrival of those animals with the possible need for tranquilization and or sedation to transport and locate them to their new home. Because of the expert handling of those out animals on arrival and the nature of their facility, no tranquilization or sedation was necessary. As I watched them each get established to their new environment --- which is an outdoor spacious location and something completely different than anything they have ever known, it struck me that they (the animals) must have thought to themselves "we have died and gone to heaven". To see a bear or a tiger interact with tree limbs and leaves and bushes which they had never seen before makes me realize again what a phenomenal job this couple is doing in providing lifelong care for some very deserving animals. I can't recommend them or their organization any higher.

I have watched and participated in the process of the fantastic growth of the Forest Animal Rescue. The dedication that Lisa and Kurt have for the animals in their care is most impressive. When talking with them one can feel the love for these animals that must remain dependent on human interaction. When some of these animals came to Forest Animal Rescue, I didn't think they even had a chance to recover from their neglect. But with the knowledge and experience that Lisa and Kurt have, these beautiful animals respond in the most surprising ways. They become more interested (and relaxed) and no longer need to fear being mistreated.

I met Lisa and Kurt a couple of months ago and they told me their inspiring story.
What theyre doing is not simply rescuing animals but they are providing a forever home for these unfortunate animals.
For them its all about the animals.....unlike some facilities there is no breeding and the interaction with humans is kept to a minimum so these animals can live out the rest of their lives as comfortable and close to their natural habitat as possible.
This is a work of love and it shows

No setback deters Kurt and Lisa, and they always put the animals first. Looking into the faces of the animals in their care, one sees gratitude, contentment, and the happy lives that they so deserve.
Their commitment to lifetime care to these beautiful animals deserves recognition, as they truly are one of the "GreatNonprofits". They truly make a difference!
I highly recommend volunteering or donating to FAR. It can be a life changing experience for you too!

Peace River Refuge & Ranch is a truly unique place. Their #1 concern is the welfare of the animals in their care. The enclosures are large enough that the animals are able to live in an environment similar to the wild. The care is outstanding. Forest Animal Rescue is the best place for needy animals to come to retire. They will not be bothered as if they were in a zoo or on exhibit. They deserve a quiet peaceful place to live out the remainder of their lives especially after all that they have endured before coming to Forest Animal Rescue. I know that the personnel running this rescue would love to go out of business, but as long as there are animals in need they will try to do all they can to help.

Forest Aninal Reacue / Peace River Refuge & Ranch will always hold a special place in my heart. I first visited them on an Alternative Spring Break trip in 2009, then went to work for them that summer. I loved them so much that I chose to take more college students on another Alternative Spring in 2010.

I've worked at Zoos in Ohio and can honestly say that PRRR/FAR puts the animals' needs first. They are not in the business of exploiting animals for profit. They only want to supply a safe healthy environment where the animals can live out the rest of their lives without distress. Their love and dedication to their work is unlike anything I've ever seen.

I recently visited them last summer (2015) and they are still doing amazing things with their rescued animals but have also been rehabilitating and releasing local black bears.

If you are ever able, visit them. However, more importantly support them anyway you can!

Co-founder and VP Lisa Stoner has been an advocate for animals since she was a kid. This refuge is truly focused on the best-interest of the animals; it is not a zoo or a money-making operation. We don't usually think of big animals like tigers and bears as helpless, but once people have control of them, they become helpless in that they are unable to feed, protect, or advocate for themselves - they are at the mercy of people who may not be able to care for them properly. Forest Animal Rescue saves animals that would otherwise be destroyed. Often these animals have endured years of poor conditions before arriving at the sanctuary. The refuge is serious about the responsibilities they assume when accepting a rescue animal. Once Lisa has them, the rescued animals have excellent care in a spacious habitat for the rest of their lives.

Horrible people the Stoner's , yes thats their name and that is what they do. I'm pretty sure one of there new properties is nothing more than a government funded vacation house. Which I doubt, the government knows about. They come maybe once or possibly twice a week on weekends, never had the power company out and I suspect there running this "operation" off a generator or generator charged battery. One of the owners of this establishment even spent time in FEDERAL prison. The illegally clear brush from a NATURE PRESERVE. They appear at really late strange hours and sometimes without headlights on, seriously sketchy characters for a non profit business.

The enclosures are very very spacious and the animals live in peace and tranquility without a care in the world.

I hope to volunteer for the sanctuary again one day. It really is an amazing place.

I learnt so much during my time here and I feel I am a better person because of it.

The animals happiness is a credit to Lisa and Kurt.

After searching online for volunteer opportunities in America I was so glad I found Forest Animal Rescue (formally Peace River Rescue) It was very daunting for me, as I traveled from London to the USA alone to spend a month volunteering.

I soon realized that this was the best decision I had ever made. As soon as Kurt picked me up from the airport I was made to feel at home. The days are long and the work is tiring but every second is worth it, you really are making such a difference to every animal in Lisa and Kurt's care.

The animals are so happy and healthy, and have the chance to live out their remaining years in peace and safety with the best care possible. I loved how nothing was expected of the animals.

Your days are filled with food prep, cleaning the enclosures/ensuring all is safe for the animals, cleaning the food prep room, unpacking food, ensuring the fridges are clean and organized, keeping the intern areas clean and tidy, feeding the animals and any other jobs which may need doing. Be prepared for anything as there is always something to do!

Be aware that you are very secluded here, so do not expect to be going out in the evenings/days off unless another of the interns has a car. Bring some books, ipad etc to keep yourselves entertained in the evenings or just make the most of the peace and quite. To be honest, you'll be pretty tired by the end of the day so you'll appreciate having a nice shower and getting in to bed. If you want to see a bit more of Florida I'd suggest traveling around once your volunteer placement is over. Oh and bring plenty of suncream and insect repellant.

Lisa and Kurt have dedicated their entire lives to ensure every animal in their care is as happy as possible, they are an amazing example of how people can make a difference. They taught me so much during my time with them and I left feeling so grateful for being a part of their lives, even if it was only for a short while.

I absolutely fell in love with the sanctuary and was broken hearted when I had to leave after my 4 weeks. However, I returned a year later to volunteer again as I just couldn't keep away. I hope to return for a third time when money allows.

I made some great friends whilst volunteering here as well as memories I will keep forever.

This place is incredible. The animals are happy and in large open enclosures with tons of enrichment. It's really nice to see a place do it right.
