Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Education, Educational Services, Wildlife Sanctuaries

Mission: Forest Animal Rescue by Peace River Refuge & Ranch, founded in 1998, grew out of the need to find lifetime care for the ever-increasing number of wild animals in captivity living in substandard conditions or victims of misguided attempts to make them into pets. Forest Animal Rescue is comprised of volunteers who assist in the rescue of non-releasable wild animals throughout the United States and are dedicated to their lifetime care. We participate in nationwide networking of accredited sanctuaries, assisting authorities in locating qualified sanctuaries in other parts of the country. Additionally, a great deal of our efforts are directed toward educating the public about the issues surrounding wild animals in captivity as well as their wild counterparts. Our ultimate goal is to avoid the need to have wild animal sanctuaries by educating people on the complicated social and physical needs of these animals and teaching appreciation of the animals in their native environment.

Results: Over 100 non-releasable wild animals are receiving lifetime care at the sanctuary

Target demographics: stop the cruelty that wild animals endure in captivity

Direct beneficiaries per year: over 130 animals with lifetime care

Geographic areas served: the United States

Programs: Rescued animals at Forest Animal Rescue are provided with high quality care in a safe, peaceful environment. Through a strong international internship and volunteer program, students in the field of animal conservation learn ways to properly care for wild animals in a safe and humane manner. During their participation in our programs, they gain firsthand experience in ways to provide the animals with high quality and enriching lifetime care. Through public speaking, semi-monthly guided educational tours of the sanctuary and other community outreach programs, Forest Animal Rescue inspires others to help break the pattern of indifference toward the living creatures we share this planet with.

Forest Animal Rescue is a beacon of light and a true model of how our Nation should interact with wildlife. Their love, dedication, and respect to the animals that are in their permanent care, in inspirational. The manner in which they work to rehabilitate and care Black Bears, intended for release, is to the standard that other facilitates should be taught. I had the pleasure of volunteering, as an inter from Ohio, at the facility and miss it regularly. I currently teach and regularly utilize my experience there and their Facebook and webpage in my classroom. I cannot praise them enough for what they do!

I have worked as a volunteer with Lisa and Kurt and their extremely competent staff for some 20 years as their veterinarian.
In my veterinary career I have had the opportunity to see a large cross section of animal facilities and sanctuary’s all around the country and have never seen one better run and more focused on what’s really important for the well being of the animals.
I have nothing but the utmost respect and praise for them and a really “true” sanctuary.. they do not put fund raising above the well being of their animals as so often is the case. If you would like to support animal sanctuaries and share that goal, this is the one that I strongly recommend supporting!!

I am a veterinarian. I've known Lisa and Kurt for about a dozen years. I have shared so many good experiences with them at the sanctuary that I don't know where to begin. There is nobody more conscientious, dedicated, or capable than this couple to care for the many animals entrusted to their care after coming from bazaar, abnormal, or abusive situations. I think my most memorable experience was even the most recent project where they received four tigers and two bears from a sanctuary that had been shut down in Colorado. I agreed to be present for the arrival of those animals with the possible need for tranquilization and or sedation to transport and locate them to their new home. Because of the expert handling of those out animals on arrival and the nature of their facility, no tranquilization or sedation was necessary. As I watched them each get established to their new environment --- which is an outdoor spacious location and something completely different than anything they have ever known, it struck me that they (the animals) must have thought to themselves "we have died and gone to heaven". To see a bear or a tiger interact with tree limbs and leaves and bushes which they had never seen before makes me realize again what a phenomenal job this couple is doing in providing lifelong care for some very deserving animals. I can't recommend them or their organization any higher.

This is a top notch rescue. They do what is best for the animals in their care and do not exploit them for money. They offer great enrichment so that they can thrive as they would in wild.

I have watched and participated in the process of the fantastic growth of the Forest Animal Rescue. The dedication that Lisa and Kurt have for the animals in their care is most impressive. When talking with them one can feel the love for these animals that must remain dependent on human interaction. When some of these animals came to Forest Animal Rescue, I didn't think they even had a chance to recover from their neglect. But with the knowledge and experience that Lisa and Kurt have, these beautiful animals respond in the most surprising ways. They become more interested (and relaxed) and no longer need to fear being mistreated.

The main reason I like this rescue is that the people that run it are so conscientious, compassionate and diligent in their care of the animals. They work very hard to continually educate themselves to ensure the safety and protection of their wards.
Bravo, say I!

I met Lisa and Kurt a couple of months ago and they told me their inspiring story.
What theyre doing is not simply rescuing animals but they are providing a forever home for these unfortunate animals.
For them its all about the animals.....unlike some facilities there is no breeding and the interaction with humans is kept to a minimum so these animals can live out the rest of their lives as comfortable and close to their natural habitat as possible.
This is a work of love and it shows

I have volunteered with Lisa and Kurt on three different occasions. I am unable to return at the present time, but make sure that I support them with donations. I cannot express how truly heart warming it was to be with two people who devote their lives to the loving care of these beautiful animals. I will never forget my volunteer experiences with them, and hope that life finds me able to return. Please, if you can donate or volunteer, do not hesitate to do so! Your life will be better for it!

I just returned from volunteering at Forest Animal Rescue with Lisa and Kurt. I cannot emphasize enough the loving care and dedication I witnessed once again.
I had previously volunteered at their old location and came away knowing that once is not enough, and now plan to return a third time. Volunteering at FAR is a life changing experience. No setback deters Kurt and Lisa, and they always put the animals first. Looking into the faces of the animals in their care, one sees gratitude, contentment, and the happy lives that they so deserve.
Their commitment to lifetime care to these beautiful animals deserves recognition, as they truly are one of the "GreatNonprofits". They truly make a difference!
I highly recommend volunteering or donating to FAR. It can be a life changing experience for you too!

Peace River Refuge & Ranch is a truly unique place. Their #1 concern is the welfare of the animals in their care. The enclosures are large enough that the animals are able to live in an environment similar to the wild. The care is outstanding. Having volunteered there 10 years ago, I am still so invested in what they are up to. They provide interns and volunteers with once in a life time experiences and memories they hold forever!

An amazing, true sanctuary for animals. They never exploit their animals and do everything they can to give these animals the life they deserve, full of enrichment, fear-free treatment, healthy diet, and veterinary care. They have room to roam and to express their natural habits. We need more sanctuaries like this! True sanctuaries. Have no fear donating to FAR, your money is well spent helping the animals. I have supported them for years and have no regrets!

Will not except my exotic " Fox" unless I pay " THOUSANDS " for the enclosure.
YOU WOULD THINK A PLACE LIKE THIS THAT HOUSES DANGEROUS CATS AND BEARS , THAT GETS HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF TAX FREE DONATIONS WOULD HAVE MATERIAL AND RESOURCES TO HANDLE A ANIMAL THATS THE SIZE OF A CAT.

THIS IS NOT A RESCUE......THIS IS EXTORTION !

The sacrifices kurt and Lisa have made to make sure these animals can have the life they deserve is astounding. I'm happy to have met such charitable people that have made me want to do more to help others. They need all the help and support they can get to continue their work and get the animals into permanent enclosures. I'm glad I got to work there for a few weeks even though I still feel like it's never enough but I hope to return again in the future. Best of luck to ye.

Forest Animal Rescue does great work. They have a passion for the animals they take care of and have been doing so for I think 28 years.

Their regret is not being able to take care of more animals.

Please support their efforts.

This is what a TRUE sanctuary should be and is ! I've had the opportunity to visit Forest Animal Rescue numerous times and with each trip I learn more and more about these amazing animals. I'm able to observe these beautiful creatures without them feeling threatened by humans invading their safe space. Lisa is a wealth of knowledge so grab the family, plan a visit and see for yourself...and ask questions. I'll be visiting again soon !

My 2 sons and I had such and amazing experience here. Our favorite part as a family was being able to see these animals in a more natural setting for them, and not a zoo. We loved hearing the back stories of each animal, and our visit there went a long way in teaching my boys the importance of being responsible when it comes to having an animal.

As the Animal care coordinator, intern supervisor and education coordinator, I LOVE working here! I have worked with many different non profits, animal rescues and sanctuaries in the past, but FAR goes above and beyond for their animals! Quality food, care, and enrichment for the animals, while they get to spend their peaceful and private days roaming their large wooded and natural enclosures and acreages.

Forest Animal Rescue is the best place for needy animals to come to retire. They will not be bothered as if they were in a zoo or on exhibit. They deserve a quiet peaceful place to live out the remainder of their lives especially after all that they have endured before coming to Forest Animal Rescue. I know that the personnel running this rescue would love to go out of business, but as long as there are animals in need they will try to do all they can to help.

I was able to see the sanctuary in January. I am always amazed how well run it is. Such a beautiful place where the animals can spend the rest of their lives just being animals. Many of them were abused or neglected before they arrived. It is wonderful this place exists.

Forest Aninal Reacue / Peace River Refuge & Ranch will always hold a special place in my heart. I first visited them on an Alternative Spring Break trip in 2009, then went to work for them that summer. I loved them so much that I chose to take more college students on another Alternative Spring in 2010.

I've worked at Zoos in Ohio and can honestly say that PRRR/FAR puts the animals' needs first. They are not in the business of exploiting animals for profit. They only want to supply a safe healthy environment where the animals can live out the rest of their lives without distress. Their love and dedication to their work is unlike anything I've ever seen.

I recently visited them last summer (2015) and they are still doing amazing things with their rescued animals but have also been rehabilitating and releasing local black bears.

If you are ever able, visit them. However, more importantly support them anyway you can!

Co-founder and VP Lisa Stoner has been an advocate for animals since she was a kid. This refuge is truly focused on the best-interest of the animals; it is not a zoo or a money-making operation. We don't usually think of big animals like tigers and bears as helpless, but once people have control of them, they become helpless in that they are unable to feed, protect, or advocate for themselves - they are at the mercy of people who may not be able to care for them properly. Forest Animal Rescue saves animals that would otherwise be destroyed. Often these animals have endured years of poor conditions before arriving at the sanctuary. The refuge is serious about the responsibilities they assume when accepting a rescue animal. Once Lisa has them, the rescued animals have excellent care in a spacious habitat for the rest of their lives.
