Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Our mission is to end the cruelty of pet overpopulation by rescuing abandoned cats and kittens and sterilizing the feral and stray cat population in the community.

Results: TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) for Community (Feral) Cats TNR is one of For the Love of Cat’s key directives. The community issues of cat overpopulation cannot be achieved through the adoption process. It must be accomplished through sterilization of the existing community cat population. In addition to sterilizing, the cats are vaccinated and under the daily feeding and care of volunteer caregivers. For the Love of Cats works with Domestic Animal Services in Collier County to adhere to the TNR ordinance currently in place. To date, For the Love of Cats has TNR’d over 5000 cats. Caregivers feed over 300 cats on Marco Island every day. Rescue of Abandoned House Cats and Kittens Abandoned pets are a major contributing factor to the increase in community cats throughout Collier County. For the Love of Cats has rescued almost 300 abandoned house cats in the immediate area over the last 4 years. Kittens are a by-product of the community cat colonies. Rescued early, they can be domesticated and adopted into loving homes. We have rescued and adopted over 3000 kittens since 2002 and continue to rescue kittens that are the offspring of abandoned house cats in our community (we rescue the mom cat as well). We no longer have kittens from the community cat colonies because we have fixed and vaccinated all of the free roaming unadoptable cats in the community to our knowledge. Spay/Neuter for Cats of Low Income Families Our Low Income Spay/Neuter program pays for sterilization surgery for cats and kittens owned by families that would otherwise abandon them without this service. Our program is designed to help families keep their pets with the benefit of reducing abandonment and thereby also reducing the number of cats and kittens that add to the existing community cat population. Every year, we help over 75 cats and kittens to keep their home. Emergency Veterinary Services for Low Income Families Many low income families have pets that need urgent veterinary attention and would be forced to allow their pet to suffer or be euthanized without this program. Last year alone, we paid for 3 dental extractions, 3 knee surgeries, 2 cats with severe whole body infections, 1 cancerous eye removal, 1 crushed tail surgery and 2 broken leg surgeries. Each of these emergencies was over $1000 each. Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program Older cats languish in shelters for years and most do not get adopted or worse, they are euthanized to make room for younger animals. Senior citizens are often living alone and depression is a major concern. This program includes cats from all rescue groups in Collier county. Cats over 5 years old may be adopted by a senior citizen over the age of 55 at no cost to the adopter. The adoption fee along with a complete care kit for the cat is provided by For the Love of Cats. This program has been a very successful one with over 100 senior cats adopted since 2010.

Target demographics: rescue abandoned cats and kittens and help low income families to keep their pets.

Direct beneficiaries per year: save the lives of over 250 cats and kittens and helped over 60 families to keep their pets.

Geographic areas served: Marco Island, Isles of Capri, Goodland and the surrounding rural areas

Programs: -TNR (trap, neuter, return) for feral cats Rescue and adoption of abandoned cats and kittens -Spay/neuter of cats owned by families in need -Help 'em Keep 'em program pays for wellness and emergency care for cats of low income families -Seniors for Seniors program that pays the adoption fee and provides a complete care kit of food and supplies for cats over 5 years old adopted to seniors over 55 throughout Collier county

For the Love of Cats is a local (Marco Island, Fl) no kill rescue. Watching them for years, Jan and husband Rich are always on the move, not just participating in their nonprofit but team-working with agencies throughout the county. You can find them on weekends at one of the local pet shops with the most precious kittens. Was so impressed with how much they do and are, donate monthly knowing they are working in the best interest of kitties. In addition, they are involved with the daily feeding of local feral cats. Their job is huge...

Jan, Jim, and all the team at For the Love of Cats do so much for cats and kittens in our community, and they also extend themselves to help care for displaced animals in our area as a result of Hurricane Irma. I was happy to help even in a very small way by contributing some food that they collected and distributed to needy pets in our area. Great work by great people!

I found For The Love of Cats 4 years ago. They truly care for the little beauties and the people that would like to adopt. They also do a great job with placing senior cats with seniors. This foundation and all the volunteers are wonderful.

I have adopted two cats (which I still have) with the help of For the Love of Cats. I got the first one from the shelter on Marco Island, which is a lovely facility. The staff were helpful and friendly but thorough in reviewing my ability to love and care for the kitten. I adopted a second one four years later from Naples Humane Society on the advice of the For the Love of Cats since they didn't have the orange cat I was looking for at the time. Even though I didn't adopt one from their shelter, they owners called around to find the kitten I wanted and then referred me to the humane society. They are very helpful and friendly people and the shelter is immaculate and well run. I recommend it highly.

For the Love of Cats is one of THE BEST nonprofits for cats. I don't know anyone more caring and concerned about cats as this organization. I got my 2 cats from them almost 8 years ago. The Love of Cats does a lot for the welfare of all cats. I am so grateful they do what they do.

We first met For the Love of Cats almost three years ago, shortly after losing our first cat at 19.
They had set up a tent at a local event to educate people about Cats in our area.
For the Love of Cats does great work finding homes for unwanted cats & kittens, taking care/saving strays, and bringing awareness to the plight of these beautiful creatures.
We ended up adopting two brothers, and they have made our life so much brighter and fun.
We continue to support For the Love of Cats so they can continue saving these precious animals, and making families as happy as ours.

Our family could not rave enough about Jim, Jan and all the volunteers at For The Love Of Cats! I had heard about FTLOC through a relative and when we decided to adopt a kitty into our family, we contacted them first. I wanted to support an organization whose goal is to help shelter and find homes for stray cats. From the first call to final "take home" visit, everyone was helpful, kind, knowledgeable, patient, and caring! Their dedication is truly commendable. They never denied us a visit to see our newly adopted kittens (yes, we ended up getting three!) and they always had time for questions! More importantly, our kittens were happy, healthy and friendly when we brought them home, they never shy from guests! If you are considering donating to a non-profit, this is one you can be honored to support. If you are looking for a warm, loving, furry feline, look no further! For The Love Of Cats, Inc. is the BEST place to go!

Our family is extremely thankful to Jim, Jan and all the volunteers of For The Love of Cats for saving and raising our three little kittens. After losing our family cat of 17 years, we knew we had to fill our home with more love. We first "met" our new kittens on the For the Love of Cats webcam and could see the amount of dedication and care that everyone at the organization gave to each cat. After meeting them several times, we were utterly impressed by the abundance of knowledge and expertise that they had and were willing to share. We never felt as though we were intruding on them when we wanted to visit and they always made us feel very welcome and comfortable. They responded to every phone call and e-mail promptly and with such enthusiasm. We now have three happy, healthy, and friendly kittens that love to be held and played with. We would highly, highly recommend adopting from For The Love of Cats!

This organization has the most caring and capable group of individuals. They are highly integrated into the community and are able to rescue cats that would not likely have a chance to be saved. For the Love of Cats is an integral rescue mission in Naples and Marco Island, and many kitties are happily relaxing in safe homes because of them. Support them if you can!

Nearly 15 years ago, Jim spent a lot of time with me reassuring me about adding two young cats to a family of two older cats, which I did, and 5 years later I added two kittens when the older cats passed on. Jan and Jim are full of compassion and good sense, for cats and their owners, and their generous work with programs to spay and neuter cats, care for feral colonies, and help seniors and families to adopt and care for cats needing homes is incredibly impressive. They make a vital and important contribution to our community.

For the Love of Cats is a blessing to all the fabulous felines and cat loving humans who come in contact with the organization. Jan, Jim and their compassionate, volunteer staff provide exemplary care and excellent socialization to all the cats they shelter. They do everything possible to assure that each and every cat finds their way to the forever home that is the proper match for their age, activity level, temperament and individual needs. For the Love of Cats also serves the best interests of their community, playing a key role in countywide TNR efforts that assist in stemming the growth of community cat populations while providing for the health and welfare of the existing colonies. They promote spay and neuter efforts, provide necessary emergency resources to assist low income families in caring for their feline companions, and subsidize special Senior to Senior adoption programs that assure older cats and humans both enjoy the companionship they so richly deserve. Thank you for rescuing and placing so many cats in need into loving, adoptive homes over the last 15 years. In so doing, you've provided countless numbers of blessed adopters with the greatest sources of joy they could ever experience.

The dedication of Jan and Jim and their volunteers for the cats in our community on and off the island is tireless. They have truly dedicated their lives and their home to saving the lives of countless cats. These cats would have otherwise died or been killed for the protection of our protected wildlife on the island.
A couple of years ago, I adopted from them a beautiful 5 year old female named Pepper named so for her lovely fur. She is the sweetest, gentlest, healthiest cat I have ever had the honor to adopt. She was selected especially for me to suit my situation and it could not have worked out better for her and for me. They gave me a crate with a bed for her, lots of food and suggestions for her keep specifically. They also followed up with calls and emails to keep in touch to make sure she was ok and that to see if I had any additional needs with her.
So very Kind and thorough!
For The Love of Cats on Marco Island is an organization that is truly worth preserving and given accolades to for all their hard work.

Jim and Jan helped me rescue a feral cat 12 years ago. He was a mess from flea allergies and needed to be neutered. After trapping him and getting him the vet care he needed, they brought him back to me. He was too feral to try and find him a home. I fed him outside for 1 1/2 years and over time was able to pet him. He decided one day he just didn't want to be out anymore. He came in and never went out again, other than the lanai. He is the love of our life. So sweet. He cant get enough petting and brushing. If Jim and Jan hadn't helped me, Red probably would have died from infection with all the sores he had. They have helped me a few other times. They are great people. If you ever want to help a charity, this is the one.

Jan and Jim are so dedicated to these cats and kittens and serve such an important service here in south Florida. Not only do they nurse back to health these poor abandoned and often sickly creatures but also help in controlling future feral colonies with their spay/neuter program. They are truly passionate about their work.

We adopted our precious Polo almost three years ago. For The Love of Cats has, indeed, become family... Not only were they incredibly thorough throughout the process of procuring our kitty, but they remain in touch always anxious to hear how he is doing... They care, they give 100% of themselves to this endeavor. During Hurricane Irma, they evacuated all of their cats and kittens (not a small feat) to safety until they could safely return to Marco Island. Concerned for their well-being, I emailed to find out if they were all safe. I was happy to hear they were back in operation, having sustained some damages, but they were also quite concerned with how we had fared (and of course, Polo). For The Love of Cats is the epitome of a the type of nonprofit I want to be associated with and support.
