Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Cats

Mission: Our mission is to end the cruelty of pet overpopulation by rescuing abandoned cats and kittens and sterilizing the feral and stray cat population in the community.

Results: TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) for Community (Feral) Cats TNR is one of For the Love of Cat’s key directives. The community issues of cat overpopulation cannot be achieved through the adoption process. It must be accomplished through sterilization of the existing community cat population. In addition to sterilizing, the cats are vaccinated and under the daily feeding and care of volunteer caregivers. For the Love of Cats works with Domestic Animal Services in Collier County to adhere to the TNR ordinance currently in place. To date, For the Love of Cats has TNR’d over 5000 cats. Caregivers feed over 300 cats on Marco Island every day. Rescue of Abandoned House Cats and Kittens Abandoned pets are a major contributing factor to the increase in community cats throughout Collier County. For the Love of Cats has rescued almost 300 abandoned house cats in the immediate area over the last 4 years. Kittens are a by-product of the community cat colonies. Rescued early, they can be domesticated and adopted into loving homes. We have rescued and adopted over 3000 kittens since 2002 and continue to rescue kittens that are the offspring of abandoned house cats in our community (we rescue the mom cat as well). We no longer have kittens from the community cat colonies because we have fixed and vaccinated all of the free roaming unadoptable cats in the community to our knowledge. Spay/Neuter for Cats of Low Income Families Our Low Income Spay/Neuter program pays for sterilization surgery for cats and kittens owned by families that would otherwise abandon them without this service. Our program is designed to help families keep their pets with the benefit of reducing abandonment and thereby also reducing the number of cats and kittens that add to the existing community cat population. Every year, we help over 75 cats and kittens to keep their home. Emergency Veterinary Services for Low Income Families Many low income families have pets that need urgent veterinary attention and would be forced to allow their pet to suffer or be euthanized without this program. Last year alone, we paid for 3 dental extractions, 3 knee surgeries, 2 cats with severe whole body infections, 1 cancerous eye removal, 1 crushed tail surgery and 2 broken leg surgeries. Each of these emergencies was over $1000 each. Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program Older cats languish in shelters for years and most do not get adopted or worse, they are euthanized to make room for younger animals. Senior citizens are often living alone and depression is a major concern. This program includes cats from all rescue groups in Collier county. Cats over 5 years old may be adopted by a senior citizen over the age of 55 at no cost to the adopter. The adoption fee along with a complete care kit for the cat is provided by For the Love of Cats. This program has been a very successful one with over 100 senior cats adopted since 2010.

Target demographics: rescue abandoned cats and kittens and help low income families to keep their pets.

Direct beneficiaries per year: save the lives of over 250 cats and kittens and helped over 60 families to keep their pets.

Geographic areas served: Marco Island, Isles of Capri, Goodland and the surrounding rural areas

Programs: -TNR (trap, neuter, return) for feral cats Rescue and adoption of abandoned cats and kittens -Spay/neuter of cats owned by families in need -Help 'em Keep 'em program pays for wellness and emergency care for cats of low income families -Seniors for Seniors program that pays the adoption fee and provides a complete care kit of food and supplies for cats over 5 years old adopted to seniors over 55 throughout Collier county

My Jasmine was rescued a month after Huricane Irma in 2017. She had 3 tiny kittens; she was abandoned with them or about to give birth to them. My husband and I came by to see their operation and donate a bit because our fanatic cat loving neighbors talked us into it. We saw Jasmine and fell in love with her and this charity. The facility was spotless; a retired volunteer vet was there doing her weekly exams; there were volunteers tending to the kitties; the environment was calm and loving. Jim totally set us up for success with this shy, traumatized two year old cat. He gave us ALL the supplies we needed and counseled us as to what to expect. Over the first six months we got some support from the staff and now we have the most affectionate pet, one whose little family was saved from destruction. This is my story, I haven't even mentioned how their work with feral cats is allowing the survival of bird species on Marco Island. "For the Love of Cats" is also "For the Love of Ground Owls." Jasmine's surviving kittens are pictured here.

This group is truly remarkable. When we found a 2 week old kitten on a road in Alabama, we didn't know what to do or have the money for her. She had many problems with fleas, broken tail, ear mites, viruses, infections, and more. This completely selfless and generous group took absolutely wonderful care of her. Thanks to them, this sweet girl went from 2 weeks to now being 2 years.

I can’t say enough about the help “for the love of cats” has given me. When we were leaving to go north for the holidays we could not find our cat. I thought for sure he somehow had gotten outside without us knowing. I left our neighbor the key and they continued looking for him. Once he was found I called “for the love of cats” and they could not have been more helpful. They found someone to come in and take care of my cat until I was able to fly back to Florida two weeks later. The cat sitter was very pleasant and called to let me know how my cat was doing daily.

They changed the lives of thousands of cats on several Florida Islands, after done with that, they went inland to continue their work. They use common sense animal care. I went to their agency years ago and they had people in rocking chairs holding/feeding newborn and/or recovering cats, an isolation area where workers held the animals in full gowns and gloves, other areas where cats could play and learn social skills.
This is a great agency that is making a huge difference in the lives of cats.

I had called many rescues regarding a stray kitten, and Jim's was one that stood out to me particularly. Even though he has many kittens himself in his care, Jim took time to help us with the situation and even drove all the way from Marco Island to meet us. He has been a blessing and has even given updates regarding the little one. Thank you so much Jim!!!

Several years ago, when we discovered the feral cat we'd been feeding had kittens, FTLC taught us to be good foster parents to newborns and provided their medical care until they were old enough to adopt out (which FTLC also handled). Yesterday, we found a kitten and, once again, Jim and Jan to the rescue... Their assistance with the medical side of things (not to mention advice) will enable us to welcome this sweetie as the newest member of our family. (She becomes our sixth "rescue baby.") We're so grateful to this organization both for the wonderful work they continue to do, year after year, and for making it possible to do our own part in providing loving homes to these amazing creatures.

This wonderful charity was the ONLY one that stepped up to the plate to help me help a cat in the woods. She is wild (but loves people so was probably dropped off) and has been fed at a Naples apartment complex for years! There was a group of us scheduling feeding times to keep her fed and healthy. Being one of only two left to feed her (people move out) it was important to find others as I leave town for 6 months but still want her taken care of. They were able to get three people to volunteer to stop by using Social Media. Jan was concerned, thorough and responsive. I love that it didn’t cost this charity money - only time. Jan was quick to respond and follow-up so I could leave town knowing this sweet cat would not starve. So impressed with their love of cats and support of those that do! I am definitely donating to this charity as I have personally seen it in action with stunning results. Terri

We had a cat spending time in our crawl space for about 1-1/2 years. Thinking it belonged to a neighbor we just allowed it to come and go. ThisFebruary we had to seal up the openings to the crawl space after having a slight termite problem and contracting with a company who I dusted on this. The cat was frantically trying to get in again and as a result we discovered she was feral with a notched ear. We put in a kitty door and began feeding her. She became very friendly and spent more and more time outside with us. Unfortunately we have an intolerant dog, a parrot and allergies so when she tried to come into the house we couldn’t allow her to. We are seasonal residents so I found Fir the Love of Cats andcalled Jim. He responded immediately and came to check her out. We were willing to allow her to remain with the hope that he could arrange to have someone feed her til we returned. He met her and said he would try bringing her in to see if she would acclimate to being an indoor cat. It has now been about a week and she is doing great. I have visited her a few times and have been assured by Jan and Josh that she is very sweet and very adoptable. This is a wonderful organization and although it breaks my heart to not be able to keep her, I know we did the right thing and am hopeful that she will find a good home with some very lucky person.

I live in the Golden Gate Estates in Naples and my family has an outside cat we’ve been feeding and doing our best to take care of for sometime now. We noticed recenty his fleas had become very bad and he likely had some other medical issues as he hasn’t been seen be a Vet in at least 5 years. After contact For the Love of Cats, I wasn’t sure what to expect. To mine and my family’s great surprise, we received a swift reply and by the next day I was making arrangements with Jim to have our friend looked at by a doctor. Jim kept in contact with me all the way through the doctor visit and followed up at the end to be sure our friend was well. We’re grateful to Jim and Jan and For the Love of Cats and wish them many more years helping cats in Southwest Florida.

I cannot thank the organization enough. They helped me with my cat Sam who is an
orange and white tabby. I found him as a stray and he became part of my family. I noticed that he was having some type of eye problems. They allowed him to go to a vet and
and helped me with the bill. I do not know the results yet because they had to draw blood work . They are a wonderful place that helps people with stray cat bills and I wish I had
extra funds to help them. Please donate for other strays because every cat is important to the family. My 11 year old daughter is very attached to him. Thank You Again thank you for
help. I really appreciated it.

It was a real pleasure working with Love of Cats. We are very happy with Stormie, our new addition to our family. Love of Cats did a wonderful job advising us about her habits so we could do a good job in preparing Stormie for her new environment. Our adoption process was very easy. We highly recommend Love of Cats to anyone looking to adopt a healthy loving cat to there family of pets.

We have known Jim and Jan Rich for years and preach to anyone that will listen about all the good they do and have done for thousands of cats. Before their intervention 15 years ago there was a bounty on the head of every lost and abandoned cat on this Marco Island. The poor animals that are not able to speak for themselves now have a voice where as they were murdered before the Rich's changed all that. We have contributed to a great many animal rescue organizations over the years and so many feed their faces and fill their pockets first and care for the animals last. You know that every cent that you donate to Jim and Jan goes directly to the animals. They are extemelly knowledgeable about what they are doing and so dedicated to a cause that needs all our help. If you care about animals and want to make a difference here is the place to do that. Our goal needs to be to support such kind and dedicated people as these two dear people are.
Sincerely
Sue and Paul St.Hilaire

For the Love of Cats is a local (Marco Island, Fl) no kill rescue. Watching them for years, Jan and husband Rich are always on the move, not just participating in their nonprofit but team-working with agencies throughout the county. You can find them on weekends at one of the local pet shops with the most precious kittens. Was so impressed with how much they do and are, donate monthly knowing they are working in the best interest of kitties. In addition, they are involved with the daily feeding of local feral cats. Their job is huge...

Jan, Jim, and all the team at For the Love of Cats do so much for cats and kittens in our community, and they also extend themselves to help care for displaced animals in our area as a result of Hurricane Irma. I was happy to help even in a very small way by contributing some food that they collected and distributed to needy pets in our area. Great work by great people!
