Mission: Food Rescue US is committed to reducing food waste and food insecurity in America. Using technology, we engage volunteers to transfer would be wasted fresh food from local businesses to social service agencies serving the food insecure.
In response to COVID-19, we have continued our operations throughout the crisis and adapted to the changing food recovery landscape. We launched three new initiatives: our community kitchens, Restaurant Meal Program, and Farm Distribution Program.
Results: Since our founding in 2011, Food Rescue US has provided more than 47 million meals to individuals experiencing food insecurity and kept over 63 million pounds of food out of landfills. We partner with more than 1,760 food donors, 8,800 food rescuers, and 1,250 social service agencies across 40 locations in 25 states and the District of Columbia.
Target demographics: people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities who are economically disadvantaged and food insecure.
Direct beneficiaries per year: over 1.0 million people
Geographic areas served: in 40 locations across 25 States. Our chapter works primarily in the DC and DMV regions
Programs: Through the use of technology, Food Rescue US has developed a simple solution to connect the vast amount of healthy, usable surplus food with the critical hunger demand. Using our simple and efficient proprietary app, volunteers sign up to transport surplus food from local businesses to social service agencies serving the food insecure.
I am the Miami Site Director for Food Rescue US. Since launching 2 years ago, using the simple food rescue app, we have rescued over 650,000 lbs of usable food and delivered to local shelters and soup kitchens. We were selected by the NFL to recover the unused food after Super Bowl LIV and rescued over 40,000 lbs. During COVID, we added FREE meal distributions from local restaurants we funded to help feed the furloughed, unemployed and food insecure population impacted by COVID.
