Mission: Food for others provides relief to poor and underprivileged persons and families located principally in northern virginia. Food for others also provides relief to churches and other organizations that operate exclusively for such charitable purposes.
Programs: Food for others distributed over 2. 2 million pounds of free food to families and organizations to help alleviate hunger in the northern virginia area. Individual households were provided food on 97,819 occasions throughout the year. Food for others provides weekend food to low-income students in northern virginia elementary schools. In fy 2017, 1,980 children in 29 different schools received a total of over 192,000 pounds of food to help alleviate childhood hunger. The "choice model" is a new method of distribution for our emergency program that started in fy2017. Before the "choice model", we had a list of grocery items that went into pre-packaged boxes for our clients, whether they needed the items or not. As of july 5th, 2016, families were able to pick the items they would like with a volunteer by their side and a few guidelines to personally supplement their pantries. The opportunity to pick their own food gives the families a little more dignity, freedom, and choice and it allows food for others to make better use of our food resources.
