I financially supported Focus on the Family for many years. I stopped for several reasons, one of which is the have a simplistic (and typical evangelical) view toward abuse in marriage.
Last week I got an appointment to talk to a Focus on the Family counselor. It was a horrible experience. He interrupted me 3 times in the short 5 minutes he spoke to me ( their website says 1 free session is up to an hour in length), was condescending and abrupt. I have dealt with deep issues in my family for decades but this counselor didn't listen and, instead interrupted me to talk at me and educate me. The problem was that he didn't listen long enough to hear what I needed to be educated in.
After a referral to a counselor (the wrong kind because, again, he didn't listen) and a quick prayer, this seasoned believer (me) was left disheartened and even more discouraged.
Really Focus? This is the best you can do?
I have received wonderful counsel, advice and materials from Focus on the Family for 30 years!! I relied (and still do) on their daily radio broadcasts to equip me with many tools to raise my children, and now I share these with my grandchildren! Timely, practical God centered advice for helping families thrive and grow! Kudos to Focus!
I have worked with Focus on several major national pro-life projects as many as 15-20 of their Family Policy Councils in different states. My organization has held meetings at Focus' main campus and I have come to know many of their experts and affiliated organizations. In every case, I found both the people and the mission hold up to scrutiny--this is a rarity even in the nonprofit world.
One of Focus' strengths is its nondenominational openness. I have found that their Christian mission does not seem to be controlled by a particular bias to particular doctrine as long as it is Biblical.
Review from Guidestar
Focus on the Family is a wonderful organization promoting family values in a Christ centered fashion. They offer educational and fun literature for all ages. They have many different ministries in many areas of life, and for all ages. If more people read the literature they have available, there would be less crime and violence in this world.
