Causes: Environment, Water, Water Resources, Wetlands Conservation & Management
Mission: The florida water environment association (fwea), a leading non-profit organization, will promote clean and sustainable water environment by: 1. Supporting and uniting our members and the public through public awareness, 2. Providing professional development of our members, 3. Promoting sound science-based public policy, and 4. Maintaining a stong organization.
Programs: Technical education - water festivals are for the public at large and for the purpose of increasing water and environment awareness. These events support and unite our members while providing professional development opportunities to members and non-members in the water and environment industry. The membership events held during the year included local luncheons/dinners serving approximately 1,290 people,multiple seminars/workshops with approx. 400 attendees, two florida water festivals with approx. 300 attendees and the florida water expo with over 300 attendees.
public education/outreach - the association provides instructional videos and material to middle school through graduate level students. These materials are designed to increase awareness of the global water environment and to stimulate interest in the various water environment professions. Public education is also provided to the public at large with a view towards educating the public on sound water/wastewater practices. Public education efforts include both encouraging high school and college students to pursue stem related education with a focus on water and educating the public at large on water and environmental issues and practices. The association has developed two scholarship programs (a) norm casey scholarship - awards a prize to the university student chapter winning the association's annual design competition. Fundraising through solicitation and golf tournaments are held throughout the state. (b) gabe delnecky scholarship - awards an endowed scholarship at the university of central florida funding is provided through the solicitation and an annual golf tournament.
fwea utility council - the utility council was formed to enable public utilities, municipalities, and the general membership to become better informed about current legislation and its impact to the industry and general public. The utility council focuses on educating stakeholders to allow for the development of sound public policy. Membership in the council includes over 44 municipal water agencies and numerous private members.
the association currently awards one scholarship annually (norm casey scholarship) to the university student chapter that win the annual design competition held at the florida water resources conference.
