Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animal-Related, Animals, Philanthropy, Voluntarism Promotion

Mission: F.R.I.E.N.D.S. mission and vision are to provide a permanent safe haven for all horses that are asymptomatic carriers of Equine Infectious Anemia within the state of Florida as well as for any horse in immediate need of assistance in Broward County thus preventing their needless destruction. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. provides sanctuary to all horses we accept. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. does not buy, sell, trade or give away horses. Instead, we offer them a lifetime of sanctuary so these animals will never need help again. Our priority is to prevent the needless destruction of horses. Our primary financial goal is to acquire sustainable funding to provide these noble animals with the dignity of allowing them to live out their lives while meeting both their psychological and their physical needs. We provide them with the best possible care and the loving interactions they so deserve. Our moral position is to advocate and participate in ongoing research to find a cure, vaccine or aide in creating a more accurate test for EIA. We offer aide by providing researchers with test tubes of blood samples, drawn by a licensed veterinarian for their work. It is also our intention to factually educate the public regarding EIA thus allowing us to dispel the myths and misconceptions that lead owners to think their only option is euthanasia. It is our ethical obligation to surrounding communities that we continue to give back to them in a worthwhile and enriching way by maintaining and enhancing our many programs that benefit local families, organizations and horse owners, thereby positively impacting the entire community.

Results: We have given sanctuary to many horses since 1987 that would have been needlessly destroyed. We are still the oldest and largest horse rescue and only sanctuary in Broward County. We have also given many people in our community the opportunity to learn about horses, how to take proper care of a horse, the commitment & dedication that is required to own a horse and the cost of a horse before jumping into buying or adopting one. Many people have moved on to get their own horses and others found that horse ownership was not what they thought it was going to be.

Target demographics: Horses with EIA, Horses in Immediate Need of Assistance, Educate the Community & the Environment. Also, people that are interested in learning about horses, proper care, the costs of horses & the commitment & dedication required before buying a horse. We also help students, diversion program kids and people that need to serve community service hours.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 50+ Horses, 2 Miniature Donkeys, 1 Hinny, 6 Potbellied Pigs, 2 Farm Pigs, 1 Sheep and a Cat

Geographic areas served: The State of Florida and primarily Broward, Dade & Palm Beach Counties

Programs: Sponsor a Horse Program, Magical Mini Program and the Membership Program for Non-Sponsors

When my son needed service hours for high school I volunteered along with him cleaning stalls, filling water buckets bathing and brushing. We enjoyed our time together caring for the horses and ponies. All of the animals there are so well cared for and loved. Debbie and her husband truly care about the horses and their well-being. Friends horse rescue is the real deal! Awesome place for kids to learn to care for farm animals and get their service hours and make friends!

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is not only a sanctuary for horses that would otherwise be killed, but it is an organization that gives many young people the opportunity to grow up in a healthy environment that they wouldn’t have if it weren’t for the loving and compassionate people that give their hearts and hard work to keep it running. I will continue to donate to this incredible non-profit organization because they are doing incredible things for young people and giving a forever home to the horses.

I am an 83 year old woman volunteering at F.R.I.E.N.D.S Rescue Ranch. I see so many beautiful horses, mini's and an assortment of other animals that have had their lives saved by this organization. All of the people that help here are so kind and loving to all the animals.I love to see the beautiful horses turned out to the pasture. They run, kick and play.
This place is my Haven for my own peace.I am so grateful to have the opportunity to come here and do what I can.

FRIENDS is great ! I always loved horses and chose the ranch to carry out my dream to learn about and be close to horses. The ranch helps provide for horses that have been diagnosed with EIA or have been neglected or abused! I’m a sponsor, but people can volunteer too. I highly recommend it! Susan Schiff

Whether it be as a child or an adult, we’ve all dreamed of loving and caring for a horse! At FRIENDS, not only are you able to fulfill that dream but you’re given an opportunity to help horses, donkeys, pigs, and goats that are in need. The ranch is full of friendly people and fun times! Education is key when it comes to caring for a horse which is why the ranch offers several informative and enjoyable classes to teach equine basics. FRIENDS even hosts a Magical Mini program to get the little ones involved in horses and the responsibilities that come with them. FRIENDS is everything and more a rescue/nonprofit should be and I’m beyond proud to be a part of such a wonderful organization.

I volunteer Tuesday and Thursday and by far it's been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Everyone that comes has such a love for these horses and it shows by how caring and dedicated they are. All of the volunteers range in age from 13 to 80 we all find something to do to enrich the lives of all the horses, ponies, goats, etc. I ask that you come to F.R.I.E.N.D.S. And see all the hard work that goes into this rescue and if you find it in your heart to help whether it be your time or donations.
Thank you, Trudie

I got my first horse when I joined FRIENDS and it was a lifelong dream that finally came true. I was in my mid 30’s at that time. I spent every day at the ranch with Thunder and he lived to be almost 30. I cherish my memories and it’s been fun watching and helping this very worthy organization grow over the past 32 years. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who care for the horses.

They are all about caring for and saving horses! The volunteers are so dedicated and there are no paid employees. This is not a fly by night organization having been formed in 1987.

Wanna have some fun? Come out and meet the horses!!!

I had a horse at friends ranch for 8 years. I loved my Toby until he passed at 32 years old. It’s a great organization and has stayed in the family since the 70’s. Debbie Beye Barwick and her husband Bobby are amazing individuals who would give up their lives for these horses. True compassion for these wonderful horses and other animals at friends ranch. They deserve to be recognized and awarded for their everlasting love And dedication to all the horses they have saved over the years.

This place is awesome for so many different animals. Lots of equines, big and small, as well as goats, pigs, and a cat. All of the animals are treated extremely well, cared for medically, and fed twice daily. Beautiful big pasture available for the horses to run around in. It's a fantastic place to volunteer and learn about the horses. It's amazing how many beautiful animals are out there. Come out for a visit. You'll be made to feel right at home.

I've been associated with these fine folks for decades. They are eager to share their knowledge about how to care for horses. One can learn a lot out at the ranch. Everyone is friendly, especially the goats! It is a fun and relaxing to be, for the horses and the people. The program is fabulous! It's like you own your own horse, but you are not in by yourself; there are years and years and years of experience and knowledge at your fingertips. Everyone who wants a horse in South Florida should adopt one of these rescued horses. You are saving a life! You will get to ride them, groom them, feed them, and you can be out there plenty to spend time your horse. Everything thing these people do is about the horses. Great job FRIENDS!

This is a unique and lovely rescue Horses place, where the goal is the protection and care of this Majestic animals.
The volunteer program alow to many people learn about what is involved on the care of horses, starting by the simple rule of provide them a clean stall, clean water..etc, them the aproach to each of them, respecting their space, and create a friendship between humans and horses.
This place, for me have the MOST SMART AND BEAUTIFUL HORSES of my life, the Minis have a lot fun attitude and very playful . The Big Horses as well are unique and very smart.
Here I have my two loved horses, because volunteering.....I meet them, and I sponsor them. My ones are not riadable. ...BUT I HAVE SUCH FUN TIME learning with them and playing as well. Just the fact of see your horse calling you....or showing you attitude...because him miss u....don't have price. Is a JOY ♡.
We have 3 Donkeys and Pigs. The pigs show so much intelligence their have a big memory, and they have the ability of recognized each of us who feed them. By this, they will have different behaviour with each feeder..in order to be with the feeder rhythm.
I TOTALLY recomend this Organization.

My daughter has spent many years here learning not only about horses but more importantly how to join groups for the greater good, work together as a team to accomplish goals, help care for animals, learn empathy for others and on and on... The lessons learned here are not just about the animal rescue but about helping to build character in oneself and in others.
I highly recommend this organization for all age groups and walks of life. It is a wonderful experience.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue is an excellent charity that provided valuable research into the health and well being of horses. Our group is looking forward to February 24 for our volunteer day where we get to take a tour of the facility and do a little dirty work! Keep up the great work guys!
