Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animal-Related, Animals, Philanthropy, Voluntarism Promotion

Mission: F.R.I.E.N.D.S. mission and vision are to provide a permanent safe haven for all horses that are asymptomatic carriers of Equine Infectious Anemia within the state of Florida as well as for any horse in immediate need of assistance in Broward County thus preventing their needless destruction. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. provides sanctuary to all horses we accept. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. does not buy, sell, trade or give away horses. Instead, we offer them a lifetime of sanctuary so these animals will never need help again. Our priority is to prevent the needless destruction of horses. Our primary financial goal is to acquire sustainable funding to provide these noble animals with the dignity of allowing them to live out their lives while meeting both their psychological and their physical needs. We provide them with the best possible care and the loving interactions they so deserve. Our moral position is to advocate and participate in ongoing research to find a cure, vaccine or aide in creating a more accurate test for EIA. We offer aide by providing researchers with test tubes of blood samples, drawn by a licensed veterinarian for their work. It is also our intention to factually educate the public regarding EIA thus allowing us to dispel the myths and misconceptions that lead owners to think their only option is euthanasia. It is our ethical obligation to surrounding communities that we continue to give back to them in a worthwhile and enriching way by maintaining and enhancing our many programs that benefit local families, organizations and horse owners, thereby positively impacting the entire community.

Results: We have given sanctuary to many horses since 1987 that would have been needlessly destroyed. We are still the oldest and largest horse rescue and only sanctuary in Broward County. We have also given many people in our community the opportunity to learn about horses, how to take proper care of a horse, the commitment & dedication that is required to own a horse and the cost of a horse before jumping into buying or adopting one. Many people have moved on to get their own horses and others found that horse ownership was not what they thought it was going to be.

Target demographics: Horses with EIA, Horses in Immediate Need of Assistance, Educate the Community & the Environment. Also, people that are interested in learning about horses, proper care, the costs of horses & the commitment & dedication required before buying a horse. We also help students, diversion program kids and people that need to serve community service hours.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 50+ Horses, 2 Miniature Donkeys, 1 Hinny, 6 Potbellied Pigs, 2 Farm Pigs, 1 Sheep and a Cat

Geographic areas served: The State of Florida and primarily Broward, Dade & Palm Beach Counties

Programs: Sponsor a Horse Program, Magical Mini Program and the Membership Program for Non-Sponsors

FRIENDS Ranch is one of the few non profit horse rescues that offer sanctuary to neglected, abused, and unwanted equines. The horses that are given a second chance at life and rescued by this group are truly given just that at FRIENDS. With the help and love of volunteers and sponsors, there’s nothing but happy and healthy horses living their best life here. The sponsorship programs are affordable and rewarding. The ranch is family friendly, filled with horses, goats and donkeys! If you have spare time to help a great cause, this is the place to go!

I am a horse and animal lover since I can remember after birth. Finding FRIENDS sanctuary helped me save my life. I have spent many hours there taking care of daily responsibilities required to keep this non-profit going. It has been a sanctuary not only for the animals, but for me as well. Today is my birthday. I wish I had more funds to donate because this place is magical. They make a safe, happy , loving place for discarded large animals to live out their lives in peace. They are wonderful. Thank you for all of the good times and love. Forever grateful to you all. Sincerely,
Ellie Palacios

I had a horse at FRIENDS for 9 years - and I loved him so until he passed at 32 years of age. Its a wonderful organization and Debbie and Bobbie have gone above and beyond for these horses - all all other creatures that have found a home at FRIENDS. Its a great organization for kids to learn to care for a horse - and without this organization these horses would be euthanized. They live long healthy lives at FRIENDS - and the community needs to know that! Get involved and sponsor a horse today! You wont regret it.

I got my first horse when I joined FRIENDS and it was a lifelong dream that finally came true. I was in my mid 30’s at that time. I spent every day at the ranch with Thunder and he lived to be almost 30. I cherish my memories and it’s been fun watching and helping this very worthy organization grow over the past 32 years. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who care for the horses.

Not just a sanctuary for animals (around 50 horses, mini horses, donkeys, and a hinny; pigs; and goats), but for the people that visit, too. The perfect place to see and learn that every life has worth, everything and everyone matters.
And if you want to spend a bit more time outside, giving back, and getting some exercise, there's nothing better than mucking a few stalls. You'll never need to go to the gym again (and the horses will thank you for it).

I sponsor three beautiful horses at FRIENDS. For the last three + years, I have gone every day. The sense of community and sanctuary found in this 60-odd acre bit of country in the middle of the suburbs is both unexpected and wonderful. And to give back, spend time with the horses, in (mostly) sunny Florida, aaaannnd get an awesome workout...well, you just can't beat that.

One best Rescuer Ranch. Volunteering here help you understand love and respect animals and specially the majesty of Horses. Is a a hard work to maintain regular shores that barn requires per this reason is an opportunity to yourself to give others your time love commitment and help. In return you get inside growth, learn skills team work, lear about self love when you understand animals don't care about your look or job or income or degree animals care about real you and the way to show them love is maintaining them healthy, and a clean barn etc. This is a volunteer opportunity for people most love animals.
I'm volunteering from years ago, and there is not other place that bring me joy of this Rescuer Organization. .....of course I sponsor my loved horse too. :-) . Isa Carolina Capaldo

FRIENDS, Inc has been a part of the South Florida community for decades. This is a great place for the young people in the community to complete volunteer hours for their school credits. They will also learn about caring for horses, being loving and supportive. If your youth happens to get into trouble this is also a wonderful and safe place for them to work off community hours. This organization provides care and shelter for so many horses. If you have time to donate, this is the place that deserves it. They rely solely on the members and community to help care for these amazing animals.

I've been associated with these fine folks for decades. They are eager to share their knowledge about how to care for horses. One can learn a lot out at the ranch. Everyone is friendly, especially the goats! It is a fun and relaxing to be, for the horses and the people. The program is fabulous! It's like you own your own horse, but you are not in by yourself; there are years and years and years of experience and knowledge at your fingertips. Everyone who wants a horse in South Florida should adopt one of these rescued horses. You are saving a life! You will get to ride them, groom them, feed them, and you can be out there plenty to spend time your horse. Everything thing these people do is about the horses. Great job FRIENDS!

FRIENDS HORSE RESCUE is a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary for horses, pigs, goats, a sheep, donkeys and even humans! The animals are well cared for and loved. The vet is a wonderful, knowledgeable, caring person.

Some horses come to the ranch in terrible condition but are not that way for long. With the
love and care they receive they soon come back to be the magnificent animals they are meant to be.

FRIENDS does a great service for the animals and the community. I am blessed to have found it.

I have been a volunteer/sponsor at FRIENDS for almost 6 years. It is a wonderful place to connect with the horses, nature and the community. FRIENDS offers the horses a sanctuary for the rest of their lives. Top notch vet care is provided as needed by our kind and caring vet.
Our horses come from many different backgrounds. No horse truly in need of a home is denied.

This is our 31st year in operation. FRIENDS has endured because it is the real deal for the animals. They always come first in when any decision is made at the ranch.

High school students have the opportunity to get community service hours by helping out at the ranch with various chores.

I am blessed to have found this place. The horses are so wonderful.

This organization has been around since the mid 1960's. Throughout the years they have saved the lives of countless horses that otherwise would have been needlessly destroyed. They have also taken in and saved the lives of abused horses and given them a new lease on life. They have made the experience of being a horse lover affordable and given horse lovers the opportunity to be involved and a part of a horses life. There are many cat and dog rescues; however, this is the only horse rescue that I am aware of that has survived the test of time. Friends is truly the "BFF" (Best Friend Forever) of all the horses that have been fortunate enough to reach this ranch. Friends deserves all the support, whether monetarily or through volunteering to help at the ranch, that they can get.

As a member of the SMPS (Society of Marketing Professionals) we chose a charity or non-profit each year to support. We chose FRIENDS and actually had a volunteer day at their location. It was very fulfilling - the people that run FRIENDS are truly passionate about the animals and you can tell put their whole hearts in that place. The most impressive was when they lead the horses out to pasture in the afternoon and those majestic animals run past you - something I will remember for years. THANK YOU FRIENDS for all you DO!!!

This rescue allows people from all walks of life to be introduced to the world of horses on every level. They have a children's program called Magical Minis which teaches the children about horses at a very young age so they can form a life long love for these beautiful creatures. The program introduces the children to miniature horses so that they are very relatable to a child. They also have a sponsor-a-horse program for children and adults and every level of riding ability from no riding to more experienced riders which allows the sponsor to have the horse to care for as their own for as long as they enjoy sponsoring. Many of these horses would have been euthanized with no other place to go for a long list of various reasons but F.R.I.E.N.D.S. has stepped up to take these horses in. The positive programs provide an enjoyable experience for many of the local communities and the people who live in them. Volunteer hours can be met and just getting out amongst the horses has a transformative effect on the people who visit. You can find more info on their website: www.eiahorses.org

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is not only a sanctuary for horses that would otherwise be killed, but it is an organization that gives many young people the opportunity to grow up in a healthy environment that they wouldn’t have if it weren’t for the loving and compassionate people that give their hearts and hard work to keep it running. I will continue to donate to this incredible non-profit organization because they are doing incredible things for young people and giving a forever home to the horses.

Whether it be as a child or an adult, we’ve all dreamed of loving and caring for a horse! At FRIENDS, not only are you able to fulfill that dream but you’re given an opportunity to help horses, donkeys, pigs, and goats that are in need. The ranch is full of friendly people and fun times! Education is key when it comes to caring for a horse which is why the ranch offers several informative and enjoyable classes to teach equine basics. FRIENDS even hosts a Magical Mini program to get the little ones involved in horses and the responsibilities that come with them. FRIENDS is everything and more a rescue/nonprofit should be and I’m beyond proud to be a part of such a wonderful organization.

The place has a warm atmosphere and it makes your time out there memorable and you feel you've accomplished something every time you go. If you love horses you should go and check out the place. The programs for our community are fantastic! Especially the new Magical Mini Program. Every child that attended left with a HUGE SMILE! The class is for kids 6-10 years old, it is 2 1/2 hours of hands on learning. They learn to groom, put a halter & lead rope on, lead a horse and how to walk them through a obstacle course. They also have a NEW Membership program with different perks. In April, they have a Celebration for the ASPCA HELP A HORSE DAY!

This place rocks! Whether your new to the equestrian world or a long time horse lover, FRIENDS has so many things to offer. Not only can you volunteer your time and have one on one interaction with the horses, you can "sponsor" a horse for a monthly fee. Because FRIENDS is a non-profit, it relies on donations and sponsorships to care for and feed each and every horse. You can schedule a tour of the ranch (see their website http://www.eiahorses.com/ for more info) to have some fun! Bring the family along, the donkeys, pigs and goats will entertain them for hours! This non-profit really puts the horses needs first and that's why I donate both my time and money to FRIENDS!

FRIENDS provides excellent care for horses in need, whether they can no longer be cared for by their owners, or if they are Coggins positive. This is a non=profit organization run entirely by volunteers.

I've known the organization and am related to the founders family since its inception. Friends has rescued both horses and people in need, both physically and mentally for a number of years. It benefits the animals as well as the people who care for them. It gives the people a pleasant atmosphere to interact with not only the horses but also others of like concerns for them. A worthwhile organization to benefit all! Please support! Thanks, Harry

I have been a loyal supporter of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. even before it's non-profit status. This is an amazing organization that not only rescues abandoned, abused, orphaned, and older horses that would be put down, but ultimately provides plenty of love and affection for these magnificent animals! It is a forever place for them to live the rest of their lives in happiness with the caring efforts of the many volunteers that have come through the gates throughout the years.

This organization also provides the opportunity for families to participate in good family recreation by allowing them to sponsor one of the horses or simply in participating in the feeding, cleaning, and care for the horses, as well as pot belly pigs, goats, donkeys, and miniature horses.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. provides local community events and services, as well as informative seminars. The emotional rewards in caring and working with the horses are paid in many WHINNIES!!!!!

This outstanding organization not only provides a haven for abused, orhpanded, and abandoned horses, but also for horses that can no longer be taken care of by their owners due to the economy, foreclosures, etc. This organization also works with the community and other organizations providing experiences of working with the horses. School students earning community service hours learn about responsibilites and caring for the animals. Other individuals serving community service hours continue to come back to help as volunteers on a regular basis. This organization exists only through donations, grants, and various fundraisers. Please vote for us!!!!!! F.R.I.E.N.D.S. thanks you.

This non profit is the real deal. There is no electric, no running water, no telephone. There are no paid employees only volunteers and sponsors/members. Their commitment is beyond belief and the horses and other animals are truly the only priority. The staff makes themselves available to the community for information, a place to serve community service hours and a place to spend time with animals. I wish I lived closer because I would go every day if I could. All of the horses are beautiful and well taken care of by a crew of very caring people. I love this place and I can bet you will too!

I have been volunteering with FRIENDS for 9 years. It is a great place, that takes excellent care of the horses. I have also been a sponsor of several horses in the past when my daughter was learning to ride. It is a wonderful place for teens to obtain service hours, as well as for Scouts to do their high level service projects. I highly recommend this nonprofit.

FRIENDS is a great place for kids to learn to love horses and other farm animals, and to develop skills and a sense of responsibility that will help them in all facets of life as they mature. Volunteering at FRIENDS is also great exercise and helps burn off all that excess energy that kids have.

FRIENDS is an amazing organization. Not only is it a phenomenal rescue providing the horses with the best way to live out the remainder of their lives in peace as a happy herd, it also is an amazing place for volunteers of all kinds to come and get away from life for a while and spend time with these amazing horses. Every animal at FRIENDS has a story, and by spending time and getting to know them can really make a difference in a persons life. I have been involved with FRIENDS for over four years and have seen people from no experience with horses all the way to the most experienced be touched by these beautiful rescue animals. Volunteers of all kinds are welcome and there is no job too big or too small. The horses and other animals truly appreciate the work that people do out there. This can easily be seen from how the spirits of these animals change from the first days they arrive to after when they get the love and attention they deserve. The process is a truly beautiful thing to be apart of. I urge everyone to experience making a difference in these animals lives, it is simply good for your soul. There is a lot of beautiful history at the ranch. Everyone involved is there for the animals and there is something for everyone. Come visit FRIENDS!

It's all about the horses at FRIENDS.... many horses are in need of rescue and sanctuary and FRIENDS provides this need. Sponsor-a-horse program is ongoing way for the public to have first hand experience and contact with these beautiful animals that have inspired and touched the human psyche for centuries.

I sponsored a horse at FRIENDS when I lived in Florida, and it was a great experience. It allowed me to learn about horses and horse ownership, something I had been trying for years, but found very hard to achieve from taking lessons and going on trail rides. FRIENDS' sponsor program on the other hand allows one to get hands-on experience with taking care of a horse. I learned a lot and am very grateful for the experience. I have since moved away from Florida and now have my own horse, I don't think this would have been possible without my time at FRIENDS.

My daughter sponsors 2 wonderful horses here. This is a great place to spend time with horses. When we originally started going to FRIENDS it was really because of my daughter's interest in horses. However, I have learned so much and have been converted to a "horse person." This is a wonderful place for both adults and children to interact with horses and learn about them.

My kids and I always enjoy our visits to the ranch. We sponsor horses at FRIENDS. Every time I am there I am impressed by the hard work and dedication of the barn staff. It is obvious they love the animals there and take great care of them.

We sponsor two horses at the FRIENDS ranch. Like another reviewer mentioned we have never been horse people. We just kind of loved horses and admired them from a far. Now, my kids ride horses and care for them like it comes naturally. To say that we absolutely love coming to the ranch is an understatement, and we drive for 45 min from Miami in one direction. Yet, we come three times a week. Everyone at the FRIENDS ranch is amazing and so helpful, always offering help and expert assistance to us. Imagine getting a horse without knowing a single thing and in a couple of days becoming able to care for your horse by yourself. This is only possible because people at FRIENDS are incredible and fully dedicated to what they do on daily basis. And, let me say this to anyone who isn't familiar, they do extremely hard work helping neglected and sick animals day in and day out. Words fail me in trying to describe their generosity, kindness, hard work, expertise and dedication.

LOVE this place!! I had been searching for a volunteer opportunity that matched my passion for rescue and animals. The FRIENDS ranch is amazing and run by the most amazing and respectable people who are all about the horses.

My experiences so far at the ranch have been amazing and I am thrilled to have found them. Each time I leave, I look forward to the next visit.

Honestly, one of the most upstanding rescues I have encountered in many years. Check them out! You won't be disappointed!

I went to this rescue with my daughter and encountered a gentleman that was very rude to me and my daughter. I was raised around horses and had an individual there ask me a question about a problem that a horse that she was sponsoring was having. When I tried to help her with her problem, me and my daughter was asked to leave the property. The people that was there and witnessed the aggression that this gentleman showed seemed to be shocked as I was. All I did was try to help this woman with her problem as I have extensive experience with horse ailments and you would think that they would welcome any help that they could get from someone if they are really about the animals as I am. Seems to me that it is more about the money at this so called rescue.

I have to say, I am very surprised by your review. I was wondering why you waited a year to write a review, and then you put one on here, instead of contacting us directly when it happened so we could address the issue back then? I would like you to know that we can happily say that we have replaced staff since last year and I am very sorry you had that experience. It is very rare we get such complaints and comments. Usually, comments like this come from children/teens playing pranks or people trying to damage an organization. I noticed you wrote that you are a professional and you have expertise in this field. Are you a professional volunteer, volunteer supervisor or do you operate an equine facility? I'm not sure what the difference between a staff member and a senior staff member would be especially since we have no paid employees. Nor do I see how in the world you get the organization is "about money" from the issue you are complaining about. Since you mentioned that you have some horse experience you probably know that every barn does things differently. I would like you to understand that we have a very experienced staff and had there been a health issue it would have been attended to immediately or the vet would have been called. That being said, I feel pretty comfortable saying there had to be more to the story than what you are saying. I am also sure you can understand that if a volunteer comes in for the first time and they started telling people what to do, or what they thought, we might get a bit concerned. We do not know you nor do we know your experience. Perhaps, if you are ever in that situation again you should go directly to the person in charge and let them know your concerns. F.R.I.E.N.D.S currently has 52 Equine, 11 pigs, 4 goats and 2 cats. It is safe to say, WE ARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS and we have been since 1987. I would happily talk to you about your visit if you would like to call me. (954)492-0168
