During the fiscal year, florida lions eye bank recovered tissue from 1,075 eye donors and distributed tissue for over 1,228 surgeries, helping to restore sight to the visually impaired and blind. In addition, the organization provided 916 tissues to further research and teaching in the field of ophthalmology.
florida lions eye bank operates an ocular pathology laboratory to assist with the diagnosis of ocular disease. Over 4,629 specimens were submitted to the eye bank pathology laboratory for study in 2016-2017. These tissues were examined, embedded, sectioned, and mounted on slides for review and diagnosis. This service is provided to the ophthalmic community completely free of charge.
in march 2017, florida lions eye bank hosted a donor family celebration to honor the over 1,000 south floridians who provided the beauty of sight through eye donation in 2016. This event was held at flamingo gardens in davie, fl and was attended by almost 300 donor family members and guests. A butterfly release to honor all 2016 eye donors was a highlight of the event.
