Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Food, Food Banks & Pantries

Mission: FISH of Greater New Haven was founded in 1968 as a cooperative, faith based service organization providing a host of services carried out on a strictly volunteer basis. Grocery delivery has been a consistent theme, becoming the sole service provided in the 1970’s. FISH today is a non denominational, non sectarian organization committed to addressing food insecurity as it impacts low income, homebound households in the greater New Haven area.

I have served as a volunteer for FISH for 5 years, helping with intakes, food stocking and delivery. The number of households and people FISH reaches each month is extraordinary but more importantly the help it gives people, the hope the food deliveries bring each month, makes being here both worthwhile and extremely gratifying. I have loved volunteering here in my retirement and will continue to do so as long as I physically can. FISH is an amazing place!

FISH is an amazing organization that leverages every bit of community support to provide two weeks of groceries to over 875 people every month. FOR FREE. It's the delivering pantry for those who can't leave their homes. FISH - Food In Service to the Homebound. Every delivery is carried out by volunteers, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year! Overheard today: " The service you folks provide is nothing short of a lifesaver. Thank you for all you do helping provide food for us".
This is our wonderful volunteer team from Yale.

I started volunteering with FISH as a part of an internship and it was such a rewarding experience. From meeting all of the volunteering and working around the pantry to meeting the clients by delivering their groceries. From the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave you just feel like you are doing good for others. I loved the time I spend there and absolutely wish I could have continued volunteering for longer!

FISH is a 44 years young "grass roots" food pantry that delivers the food to needy recipients. It helps so many people. Working on a shoe string and the good will of hundreds of volunteers. FISH of Greater New Haven has been quietly serving the elderly and disabled and extremely poor people who do not have ready access to food much of the time. They are kind and upbeat and do it all in a simple human to human way free of bureaucracy and red tape that only makes the whole experience of needing to ask for help worse. GO FISH!
