I am a First Book Tucson Board member. I joined First Book Tucson because I wanted to give back for all the benefits that I have received through signing up with First Book. I coordinate the Reach Out and Read program at El Rio Community Health Center in Tucson Arizona. Many of our patients do not get exposed to books any other way than through the Reach Out and Read program and the books that I have available for all children in the waiting room. First Book lets me continue the magic of owning a new book and the joy of reading. Our volunteers are so happy to give books to the children and the children are so excited to actually keep the books.

My name is Renea Boren. I have been a librarian for 14 years. I learned about First Book last year, it was easy to apply. We learned in July that Sunny Brae Elementary School would receive over 10,000 books! When the students returned in September, to their surprise, they were each given 3 to 5 books so they could start a home library. At Sunny Brae we service about 700 children Pre-K through 5th grade. We are a 100% Title 1 school. First Book is a wonderful resource for children that have probably never had a new book that was theirs to keep. First Book has now given our students more than 15,000 new books. Last year our students read over 30,000,000 words (as tested by the Accelerated Reader program), that is 20,000,000 more than the year before. First Book has made a huge difference in these children's lives. The excitement on a child's face when they receive a new book is one of the most wonderful sights you will ever see.
