Mission: Fire is a 501(c)3 organization that has as our mission to encourage and respond to people's desire for authentic expression. We believe that social and cultural awareness generates and sustains social justice. We design our youth development programming to help youth and young adults cultivate the leadership, self-discipline, self-confidence and self-esteem necessary to lead positive and productive lives. We understand that education and participation in the arts and culture contributes to the healthy development of young people, their families and communities.
Results: 1. Young Adult Created and Led Programs: 2010 Programs included: Cultural Advocates for Young Adults (CAYA) * Youth Achievers After School Program * Keeping Peace Project * FIRE Inter generational Projects and Collaborations - 2010 collaborations included work with the Hispanic American Council, the Edison community, the Edison Neighborhood Association, Public Safety and other individuals and organizations by the FIRE youth bringing them together to share the broad activities of Fire and get ideas on how people feel about FIRE. 2. Creation of and youth participation in positive community and civic activities: * 2010 community improvement projects included an Edison neighborhood community garden, the Beloved Community with ISAAC, hosting open mic events for Ministry with Community, and doing hosting and performing for various neighborhood block parties, as well as hosting community dialogues around violence, poverty and hunger. 3. Providing opportunities for youth to learn about and gain tools to attend college. 4. Continuing our unique and affordable arts programming for the Kalamazoo Community such as art hops, poetry, live music, theater, improv comedy, open mics and rental space for emerging artists to do their own events.
