Fernside serves grieving children and their families in Greater Cincinnati (which includes Northern Kentucky and SE Indiana). They charge nothing for any of their services, which include peer-support groups in the evenings (to accommodate families) and in schools; phone consultations for parents, family members, and other people in the community who want to help grieving kids; educational programs; camps; and more. This is a most unique organization in our region, because grief (especially children's grief) is such a challenging issue to address. For one thing, many if not most adults expect children to bounce back after someone dies; but the truth is unresolved grief can have lasting impact on a child and cause low self-esteem, difficulties in school and with relationships, and down the road, poor and risk-taking choices. As a counselor, myself, I am impressed with the professionalism, warmth, and genuineness of the Fernside staff, who are experts in children's grief.
