Mission: The mission of the family nurturing center is to work with others to build nurturing communities where children are cherished, families are supported and healthy development is promoted by all. To achieve its mission, fnc offers family support and education programs to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect by building parents' nurturing skills and knowledge of healthy child development and connecting families to each other, to their community, and to vital resources. Fnc employs two main strategies for supporting families: nurturing parenting programs and community-based family support networks. In addition, fnc leverages its funding and expertise by providing training and technical assistance to spread both strategies and build capacity in other organizations across boston and massachusetts.
Programs: Family support networks:a continuum of community-based programs for families with young children in dorchester, roslindale, and allston-brighton that includes newborn home visits, the parent-child home program, parent-baby and parent-child playgroups, parenting support and education, family events and resource and referral services. Programs build parents' skills as nurturers and teachers, develop children's social-emotional and school readiness skills, and connect families to resources and each other. Nearly 2400 parents and children were served through family support network programs in fy17.
training and technical assistance:fnc is the statewide training and technical assistance center for nurturing parenting programs. In fy17, we provided fourteen 3-day trainings to 149 professionals in family nurturing program and nurturing father's program facilitation and coordination. We consulted extensively with community agency partners, dcf, family resource centers, and the department of housing & community development. Fnc's "father ambassadors" team (made up of nurturing fathers' program graduates) promoted father engagement in presentations to 4 dcf area offices, and we led nurturing fathers' program workshops at the new england fatherhood conference. Fnc hosted a statewide nurturing network meeting in worcester in june.
nurturing parenting programs:research-validated, interactive parent support and education programs that involve the whole family in weekly 2. 5 hour sessions over 12-15 weeks. Programs build nurturing skills through group lessons and activities from a nationally recognized curriculum emphasizing empathy, empowerment, positive self-worth, and the use of dignified discipline. Fnc coordinates nurturing programs as a preventive and intervention strategy with at-risk families, many of whom are involved with the ma department of children & families (dcf). One hundred and four families (adults and their children) participated in seven dcf-funded programs in fy17 (including nurturing a program for cape verdean families, and three nurturing fathers' programs). Four additional community-based nurturing programs are included in our family support networks funding, above, and we also received outside funding for two nurturing fathers' programs at the whittier street health center.
