Causes: Community Coalitions
Mission: Family matters, located in chicago's north of howard neighborhood, offers children and families of diverse culture and experience individualized personal development experiences that provide them with opportunities to find their place in the world and to be a force for positive change. Utilizing our principles of leadership -positive thinking and language, peaceful conflict resolution, and the power of responsible decision-making- we partner with families to design and implement a robust experiential learning curriculum. Our programs range in scope from tutoring and after-school activities for children and teens to broader initiatives such as fitness and health, postsecondary readiness and environmental stewardship. Family matters promotes personal and collective activism, seeking to effect change by encouraging and supporting engagement in the broader community. For all who call family matters home, we offer a safe environment in which each person can explore, discover, and take risks.
Programs: Family connections, accredited by the national after-school alliance and licensed by the department of children and family services, works with children, ages 5 through 12, and their families. It provides a thoughtful balance between creativity and structure and lays a solid foundation for participants' emotional growth, leadership development and academic performance, while incorporating family interaction and community involvement. Children participate in experiential learning activities such as working in their own garden, overseeing their own fitness routines and managing entrepreneurial ventures to raise funds for a holiday party or to beautify their school. Children and parents develop life skills, confidence and a sense of personal well being through these experiences. Family connections meets monday through friday, september through june.
