Mission: For more than 20 years, Family Lives On has been increasing the awareness of the impact of grief and trauma on a young person. The nonprofit’s mission is to provide lifelong emotional support for children and teens whose mother or father has died. The Tradition Program provides opportunities for intentional remembering, creating a safe haven for grief, communication, and celebration. We serve all children ages 3-18 regardless of race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, or the cause of the parent's death. Our program is one-of-a-kind as we help the child carry on a tradition that they once celebrated with the parent who died. Although there are other forms of grief support available, our Tradition Program is ongoing and has 5-7 touch points throughout the year in addition to the annual tradition celebration. Not only are we facilitating their traditions, but we are also often a conduit to other grief support services. We help to heal not just the child but the family unit. As part of our mission, Family Lives On continues to work to adopt new practices in the field of child bereavement and to change the social conversation about death and childhood grief. #GiveGriefWords

Family Lives On truly believes in what they do. They take the pain and grief and sorrow that children have to learn to live with when they lose a parent -and they help the children then learn how to celebrate the parent they have lost through keeping beloved traditions alive. When you lose a parent at such a young age...that pain and loss never go away. You learn to just live with it. But there are the constant life-long reminders of how they are missing in your life- High School Father/Daughter dances, Donuts with Dad in grade school, family vacations, the empty seat at the dinner table. You hold onto the memories that you made with that parent as if they are gold. Family Lives On helps these kids keep those memories going and turns them into a positive feeling instead of a somber one. I know this as fact as my nieces lost their mom and have gone through the program. I was there and helped them celebrate their mother during the Family Lives On sponsored traditions. It WAS a celebration of her life... I also know the pain firsthand as I lost my father when I was 10 and would have loved to have had something like this to "Celebrate" my dad instead of having everyone tip toe around me and my siblings. It would have helped make the pain and everyday loss a little more bearable. So, I am not only a past participant in the Celebrations- I now work as a volunteer to try to make sure as many children as we can support- can smile at the memories of their parents instead of feel the deep sadness of the loss- even if it is just for a day. I love what Family Lives On does....

Family Lives On has provided kids lasting memories that they created with their parent they lost. To celebrate a special occasion that they shared with their mom or dad and to continue that tradition is important and keeps their lost parent in their hearts and not forgotten

It is a privilege and wonderful experience to be a volunteer with Family Lives On. I enjoy working with the office staff and volunteers who have dedicated their time to this mission offering families who have lost a loved one the opportunity to create a memory through a tradition each year. It is fun putting together a package filled with items to help the children celebrate a special time, enclosing a personal note and knowing how much they enjoy receiving their Tradition Package. We often get feedback and photos of their experience which always acknowledges how meaningful this wonderful mission is to so many.
