The Faith Network of the East Bay has long filled in critical gaps within the Oakland Unified School District and beyond. Anchored by their Succeeding by Reading program which addresses under achieving 2nd and 3rd graders in literacy, the Faith Network also provides library services, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) labs, healthy foods programs, and also the CareerBridge high school internship program. I started off personally as a volunteer within the Succeeding by Reading program and now serve on the Board of Directors, where I've had the privilege of serving alongside many like minded individuals whose hearts are aligned for the teachers and students of Oakland.
I have experience being on the receiving end of Faith network Services. I was a teacher and saw that volunteers came consistently. A key factor in building relationships with our Urban students. Volunteers were working with teachers to ensure that their tutoring time was effective and aligned with the classroom instruction.
When I became a school administrator FN's positive reputation continues and other schools began to ask about their services. It's not in Faith network's capacity to serve every underserved community/school in Oakland, wish they had the funding to do that. The integrity of the volunteers with the school and deep connection the volunteers have with students and the school staff is invaluable. As an educator we appreciate their presence in our Oakland schools. Now I have chosen to join their board and hopefully help the organization continue to build the quality of service to our students.
My wife and I have both served as reading tutors in Faith Network's Succeeding by Reading program in Oakland elementary schools, serving first, second and third graders. While working with these young students it can try one's patience from time to time, our efforts are rewarded by the bright smiles of success and increased self esteem when a child who was reading below grade level equals or exceeds grade level after a school year of hard work with his or her tutor. Over 120 individuals volunteer to tutor in this program with the result that 70% of the students receiving tutoring advance more or more grade levels in their reading ability.
What a pleasure to be a small part of this great organization! Faith Network provides 1 to 1 reading tutoring in the Oakland public schools, STEAM program, science camp, CareerBridge summer internships for students 14 & up, book bags to take home and also food bags...elements to provide nourishment to help these students reach their full potential. Volunteer based organization where donations are carefully used to the best purpose for our underserved Oakland students.
Faith Network is a great organization to give your time and resources to. The essence of the organization is to partner with our schools to tutor, mentor, provide healthy foods, and environments for our kids to flourish.
We are the village to help raise our children and give them the best opportunities available.
My husband and I have been volunteers since 2009, helping with science enrichment in elementary schools in after-school programs and now we are coaching a middle school coding and robotics club after school. We have been donors to Faith Network for almost that long. We are retired scientists, so find it very satisfying to help kids vector toward STEM careers. We are trying to not only spark interest but also help these youngsters develop some skills and knowledge that will get them farther along the road to a STEM career. Everything Faith Network does is excellent. The staff people are dedicated and meet the highest standards of integrity and effectiveness. Faith Network has made a huge impact on the children in Oakland’s public schools, as well as on the entire community. Faith Network makes is easy and fun to be a volunteer! Volunteers are also finding that they are changed by the experience of coming alongside these children as they develop a love for learning.
After retiring six years ago, I began thinking of things I would enjoy doing with my free time. I had heard about many friends at First Covenant Church who were partnering with Faith Network of the East Bay, an organization that was started by my former pastor, Randy Roth. His vision was to help work with the schools in Oakland and flood these schools with organized volunteers in order to make a real difference in improving individual reading and math skills.
I signed up immediately and have mentored a student, one-on-one, every year since,
Volunteer work is a blessing and working with these second graders who hunger to learn and read and do math brings a sense of satisfaction that I never felt in my old profession.
Hopefully, one day, one of my kids will remember, "oh yeah, Mr. Wilson taught me that!"
There may be many literacy efforts in the East Bay. None is more effective and more efficient than Faith Network of the East Bay. Just ask those who are tracking this in the Oakland Unified School District. Thanks to a corps of volunteers who keep coming back, some for many years, and thanks to the leadership of their Succeeding By Reading Director, Rebecca Buckley and her experienced team of clinic coordinators, this literacy program is reliably raising reading skills for each student on average two reading levels per year. Disciplined, quiet, effective and incredibly inefficient.
My husband and I have been involved with Faith Network of the East Bay for five years in several capacities. I have tutored second grade students at Prescott Place Elementary School in Oakland as part of the team of Faith Network volunteer tutors in the Succeeding by Reading program. Both my husband and I work at the Faith Network office in the summer helping prepare the vast amount of materials and resources used in the school programs each year. Volunteering at Faith Network is so rewarding because we can see concrete results in the difference this work makes in the lives of the children of our community.
Faith Network is an organization that helps students who might otherwise be left behind in skills including reading, science, technology, engineering and math. For the older students, helping to prepare them for careers through their Career Bridge internships and mentoring are parts of the very important work that Faith Network does.
This is a wonderful organization that makes a huge difference in the lives of many, many children in our community.
I've been involved with Faith Network for several years, in the past as a volunteer and donor; and currently as a Board Member.
I Oakland, but the City has a huge disparity between the highest and lowest performing schools. I've always been attracted to FN as it helps the most needy children in Oakland to perform better at school.
It's been a very rewarding experience working and volunteering with Faith Network as they are an exceptional resource for kids of the San Francisco East Bay. I recently volunteered assisting their gala event planning team, and got a chance to witness first hand the fruit of many volunteer efforts that culminated in multiple college scholarship awards, one student's display of improved reading and literacy, summer job internships and more. If you're looking for an effective way to get involved and truly want to make a difference, consider volunteering as a tutor or a mentor for one of their programs. You can choose from Science Horizons, Career Bridge, Success by Reading or Health for Kids. You'll be glad you did!
I was able to attend this year's annual "Hope for Children Now" Benefit Gala. The gala was well attended by the Oakland Unified School District, including the newly named superintendent. Clearly, the services and support of Faith Network have been and continue to be instrumental to the district's education goals. Many volunteers also attended, as did many of the children - all celebrating the Faith Network spirit of community. It was all very inspirational and filled with much optimism for the future.
