Earlier this summer, my 12 and 15-year old daughters came back from one of their very first college tours bubbling with excitement. All about how much they loved the school and wanted to go to college there someday. About how beautiful the campus was. About how cool the library looked. About the exciting classes and activities. And they kept bubbling on, talking about how SAFE the college was and how the chief safety guy told them about all the great safety procedures and practices in place for the school.

And my heart sank. And broke a little. I had no idea how high safety was on their list as they thought about college. But of course it is. Because of sexual assault and active shooters, safety is big on my girls' list of qualities in a college. They have been doing active shooter drills in school since kindergarten. For very good reason. I didn't have the heart to tell them about the shooting that occurred off-campus, at a party of students from that very same university, just one week later.

It is for my daughters' safety and for the safety of all of us that I support Everytown for Gun Safety. Now, more than ever. I made a commitment this year to stop being heart broken and to take action, to not take these horrific tragedies one after another, as a given. We need sensible gun laws in this country and I believe Everytown is the right organization, the right movement, to help turn the trajectory of needless death and tragedy around.

Everyday, 91 Americans are killed by gun violence. 88% of voters oppose proposals to make it legal for people to carry concealed loaded weapons in public without a permit. Sensible, reasonable gun control is actually an issue where most Americans can find some common ground. Let's join together to make change.
