Despite recent funding challenges that have impacted this 20 year plus organization, Everybody Wins! Iowa is finding ways to continue delivering on its mission - to provide reading support and mentoring services for at risk children who may be reading at a diminished level. Organizational leadership remains committed to the effort and is not afraid to apply some out-of-the-box thinking and methodologies to be both successful and relevant.

Everybody Wins! Iowa is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the reading and life skills of the children that it mentors. Now celebrating 21 years in Centra Iowa, the organization continues to make a difference in the everyday life of the children and mentors in the program.
I first volunteered with EWI as a power read mentor. Once a week I'd spend an hour with my student at lunch and we'd chat and read together. Now I have joined the marketing committee and enjoy telling the organization's story -- especially the power read info. Here's that program in a nutshell: "Our signature program is Power Read, where volunteer reading mentors are matched one-to-one with a student for about an hour each week and together they read and engage in conversation. Programs may take place during breakfast, lunch, after-school, or evening dinner sessions primarily at elementary schools or through community organizations. Students are suggested for our program by teachers based on three areas: students are struggling with reading, are English language learners, or they might benefit from having a positive ongoing mentoring experience. These consistent, positive interactions aim to provide students with a dependable role model who works to strengthen their confidence with regard to reading."
I have been reading with EWI since it’s beginning here and have enjoyed reading to each of the students I have had over the years. The staff always make it a very easy and rewarding experience each week and well worth my time.
I love, love, love EverybodyWins Iowa! My reading buddy is so sweet and gets so excited about the books we read! He definitely makes my job easier and oh, so rewarding. Also, my site coordinator is great. She always communicates so well with the volunteers, and she makes us feel important. I am looking forward to a really great year with EWI.
Everybody Wins Iowa! holds true to their name! Volunteer mentors come and read to a child in a school each week and form a bond with that student. The mentor wins by giving back and making a difference in the life of a child The child wins by building their self-esteem, literacy, love for books and so much more!
I started with Everybody Wins when it first began at Monroe in 2003. I came back after retiring in 2022. It is
a wonderful way to help a child with reading and to be a positive mentor in their life. Their faces light up
when they see you, the stories they share with you, and the thanks you get from them make it all worthwhile. The student I first read with in 2003 told me it was the best memory he had from grade school.
While I am happy to hear that, I was also saddened. This is why this program is so important and your time
would mean so much to a child.
This is an Amazing program. It brings positive role models into children's lives with an emphasis on literature. It's so important for the youth of today to see various types of individuals volunteering their time and to see positive adults in their life. School is a safe place for many children and many children just need a little extra help and attention to be the best humans they can be. This nonprofit's programs provide so much of that.
Love volunteering with EWI! Mentoring with a student each week is so fulfilling. Building that relationship each week is so impactful and it's wonderful to see students progress throughout the year.

I've been a reading mentor with Everybody Wins! Iowa for about 13 years. I love meeting weekly with my student to catch up on what's going on in their life as well as exploring new and different books together. I've always felt literacy is a foundational skill and feel great knowing I'm helping a student along on their reading journey by sharing my love of reading. I've also had the opportunity to serve on the board for several years and love how the community really comes out to support this awesome organization.

They get so excited to see their mentor who comes to see just them. The smiles are so special when the see them in the room when they enter. I'm not sure who gets more out of the program.

I have been volunteering with Everybody Wins for 3 years now - and I love reading with my paired student! To watch her grow in her love of reading has been great and I am not sure that it would have happened without the help of Power Read. She has become a more confident and enthusiastic reader. I am excited to start this year's reading off this month, and I am sure she is, too!

Thanks for the review, Emily!
I was blessed to work as a site coordinator with Everybody Wins! Iowa for two or three years. Being someone who got through school because of the strong reader I became through having great reading mentors, this program was a great experience, working with mentors and mentees as we built relationships and read aloud to one another. I loved the reading, I loved the relationships. Now that I teach full time I have taken my EWI experiences with me into the classroom and become the biggest cheerleader of every struggling reader at my school. I hope to get actively involved with EWI again soon!
Reading with a child is such a rewarding experience, particularly getting to watch them grow in their confidence and in their enjoyment reading. It's also rewarding to form a relationship with your mentee and get to know them better. The best part is it's only 45 minutes per week during lunch, so I don't have to commit time after work and can use my lunch break to make a big difference in someone's life!

Spending time reading and bonding with my buddy has been the most rewarding experience I've had in a long time. It's easy to see progress in my student, without having to have "expertise" in teaching reading skills - just a genuine love for reading and helping children in need. It's also an easy time commitment - just one lunch break per week.

I've been a reading mentor with EWI for close to 9 years. I've been paired with several students over the years and get so much joy in seeing their reading improvement throughout the school year. Having the one-on-one interaction is so valuable for many of these students who aren't getting that level of personal attention anywhere else. Reading is so important for overall success in school and life, and I'm more than happy to share my time helping these students succeed as well as understand that reading can be such a fun pastime.

I first discovered Everybody Wins! Iowa while working at an event that helps non-profits tackle technology problems in a 48 hour hackathon. Their mission really resonated with me as I greatly enjoyed reading growing up and I was blessed to have my mom as my mentor and being able to read voraciously greatly expanded the possibilities for my future. I've continued to work with them after the event and I'm always impressed with how hard they are working to raise funds to be able to give the kids an opportunity to have a mentor as well as supplying them with a variety of books to read to accommodate all levels of skill from kindergarten through 4th or 5th grade.

When I retired I needed a little more to do than what I was doing. I looked on line for volunteer opportunities and came across Everybody Wins - Iowa! I have been a reading mentor for three years. It is fun to try to find just the right book for my reading friend. He eats lunch. I read. And, we both have a great time enjoying a good book and a good friendship!

This is an excellent organization. There is a high need for programs like this. I truly enjoy reading with students and helping them improve reading. There are so many dedicated volunteers but could still use more, specifically male mentors. I recommend volunteering to be a reading mentor.
