Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection, Water, Water Resources, Wetlands Conservation & Management

Mission: Known as the Eno River Association, we are a grassroots nonprofit organization founded in 1966 and dedicated to conserving and protecting the nature, culture, and history of the Eno River Basin. The programs of the Eno River Association are designed to protect the lands and waters of the Eno River Basin through land conservation, environmental education and advocacy.

Results: Most notably, the Eno River Association has been instrumental in the creation and protection of over 5,845 acres of open space and parklands including the Eno River State Park, West Point on the Eno Durham City Park, Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Penny's Bend Nature Preserve, and the Little River Regional Park.

Programs: The organization's purpose is to conserve and protect the natural, historic, and cultural resources of the eno river basin. During 2014 the organization was in contact with more than 75 interested owners of land along the river and tributary streams, providing information about land and water quality conservation options, and actively working with several of those owners to finalize negotiations to permanently protect the property. The organization provided public information and involvement opportunities throughout the year in the form of organized weekly educational hikes in winter and spring, volunteer land stewardship workdays each month, and its 2-day festival for the eno outreach and education event. The organization works with classroom teachers to provide programs on local ecology, assists eno river state park personnel with education programs for children and adults, organizes independent educational programs for children throughout the year, and runs a two week-long summer science education camp.
