Volunteering at AAH was an amazing experience, so good I returned! Nyakio built the home from nothing and it's been wonderful to see the pace at which it's grown and developed over the years. She has many ideas of the ways to improve support for the ladies as they regain their independence and in the wider community, I look forward to seeing what she manages to achieve next. She's very open and welcoming and gives you space to use your own skillset to grow the ladies' abilities or to support the home in any practical way. The ladies and staff were wonderful too, very welcoming, kind and fun. Highly recommended.

I can't say enough good tings about the work of Empowering Minds International. I have been able to visit Agatha Amani House in Naivasha, Kenya. The work they do there is incredible. What I consider the most impressive is how they are such good stewards of the funds they receive and how they have been able to incorporate environmentally sound practices in all they do.

My name is Grace Gichimu am a community aider. Agatha amani helped me find a home for one of the deaf in my area who was suffering from domestic violence from her husband. They sheltered her and the infant, gave counselling and also equipped her with baking skills.

Agatha Amani House is a safe haven for many women. It is a place many lifes have been touched and transformed. A place where a lot is possible. A place of hope for so many.
Nyakio (the founder of AAH) has a vision, she has a plan and she never runs out of ideas to improve AAH. They have come a long way.
For me it was impressive to see how much you can do out of very little. The house is surrounded by a amazing Permaculture farm. The three month I spent there went so fast by. I left as part of this amazing family.

The project is a wonderful experience, and so enriching if you let it. The circumstances aren't always easy, but they allow for great growth. The hosts and residents are kind and welcoming, and make you feel at home. The living conditions are very basic, but sufficient. The tasks are varied and engaging, and include the volunteers in the permanent team. All and all a great experience, would 10/10 recommend & come back myself.

AAH is an organisation which wants to change the world to a better one with giving women a safe space. It's not just a shelter but a home. And so it was for me during my stay. Till now, more than one year after my stay, I think back to time at AAH and feel encouraged and inspired to make something great like they did.

I assisted the owner and the project coordinator (as a volunteer) to work on solid curriculum that will be able to host more women and graduate old women. Both of them were extremely open minded and open to ideas. We put so many goals and achieved little but steady goals. Everyone is working in the shelter, rules are distributed among all the girls. We worked on trying to find the passion for every girl so she can have a new passion and face the world positively. We were able to accommodate some but other girls had dreams that need more investing which was challenged by the lack of finance (ex: baking, Hair Salon, photography...etc) others are good with what the shelter offers like gardening, farming, cooking and catering and house keeping . Also upon having a career counseling sessions, I Found that the girls have very high potential, the team working there have so many ideas, volunteers are interviewed individually and picked carefully but each girl needs more finance to be able to receive more than food, shelter, health care, baby care, and limited learning areas offered by the team. They need highly, consistent professional counseling for those who had sever trauma, and investing in their education to feel that they have a bright future.
I was mind blown with the work of the team there, how they put schedules for volunteers so they try to reach the best outcome as they lack money to hire more staff. Staying there taught me a lot about life and I ask everyone to help even with 1$. Yiu have no idea how consistent 5$ Will help!

"A life changing experience!"

After searching for months for an ethical organization, I decided to volunteer at Agatha Amani House for two months. The best decision I could make! The staff and girls living at the shelter are very welcoming and make you feel at home right from the beginning. Hearing their stories was confronting, but therefore I am so grateful that I could be part of their healing process. As a psychologist my tasks included individual counseling, group therapy, preparing and teaching classes, organizing activities, taking care of babies, administration, and many more. I wasn't bored for a minute and always found something to do. What your tasks are at the shelter depends on your expertise and what you feel like doing. Everyone at AAH is open to any suggestion and all support is helpful.

My experience was even better than I could imagine. I feel like I was able to make a change and at the same time learned a lot from the girls and their culture. I miss them already. Highly recommend! :-) If you have questions, message me at silke.heylen@hotmail.com and I will be happy to answer.

This organization, in which I volunteered during 2 months, helps teenage girls or young women (and their babies) reintegrate into society after sexual trauma. They have a farm and implement permaculture to produce more sustainably. Thanks to the farm they generate food and incomes. These revenues make it possible to organize the education and reintegration programs that change the lives of these women. Unfortunately, this is not enough for the number of people there, that's why they're currently trying to buy a new hectare of land, don't hesitate to help them! Your donation will be well used and very helpful!

It was very interesting and meaningful to work with all the staff and girls. I learned a lot with them and I hope I was useful too.

Nyakio, Marie and the others, I hope you all the best!
