Causes: Human Services, Residential Care & Adult Day Programs
Mission: The organization's mission is to provide safe haven, life skills and education to children in our care. Elon homes fulfills its mission through its three primary programs: community-based foster care, kids central of the carolinas behavioral and mental health services, and kennedy charter public school.
Programs: The community-based foster care program provides refuge, within a licensed family setting, for children who need a safe place to live when their parents cannot adequately care for them. We serve children, ages 0-20, in roughly a dozen north carolina counties from mecklenburg to durham, and we accept referrals from any north carolina department of social services. During this fiscal year, we provided services for approximately 163 children.
kids central of the carolinas is a behavioral and mental health agency with licensed clinicians committed to providing psychological services to youth and their families. It is one of the few child-focused counseling and testing services in the region that accepts medicaid, making much-needed care accessible to low-income families. We provide a wide range of behavioral health services, including individual therapy, family therapy, testing and assessment, and more. During this fiscal year we served approximately 336 children and their families.
kennedy charter public school is a tuition free nc charter public school serving grades k - 12. The total school population is approximately 350 students. The school population is 90% free and reduced lunch which means kcps is educating a high poverty student population. The school is using curricula in the k - 8 grades to enhance the academic experience of the students and to bring and keep all students at grade level. In these grades the school uses singapore math, riggs phonics and the core knowledge sequence curricula. The high school (9-12) relocated to the campus of johnson c smith university in the fall of 2014. K-8 will begin the 2015-2016 year on the campus. Students in every grade of kennedy will thus have incredible new academic opportunity on a university campus.
