Programs: Elizabeth seton pediatric center was established by the sisters of charity of new york in 1987 as a program of the new york foundling in response to an unmet need for post acute pediatric care. As the needs of children became more acute, the organization grew to meet this challenge and the pediatric center came under the direction of its own board of trustees in 2000 and remains under the sponsorship of the sisters of charity of new york. Originally focused on solely providing long term care, the pediatric center now also specializes in facilitating a transition for infants, children and adolescents with rehabilitative and medical need to home, as soon as practicable. Our specialty programs include failure to thrive, comprehensive feeding therapy, palliative and curative skin care program, long term ventilator dependent care, genetic evaluation, and chronic respiratory management. Our occupancy rate had averaged 99% over the last five years. The children we serve are among the most vulnerable and physically and neurologically challenged from the boroughs of new york, westchester and putnam counties. Their range of medical conditions and disabilities of our residents includes orthopedic related disease, premature birth, congenital heart disease, traumatic brain injury, genetic syndromes, failure to thrive, muscular and neurological diseases and chromosome, metabolic, and respiratory disorders. Although approximately 20% of the children are discharged to their families or community placements, the remainder will live at the center throughout their life or until they are referred to an adult facility at the age of 21. By appreciating and maximizing each of the children's unique strengths, abilities, and personalities, we are able to achieve outcomes that may not have been possible in other settings. Elizabeth seton pediatric center is a member of leading age new york, the continuing care leadership coalition, and leading age. To learn more visit www. Setonpediatric. Org.
