Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animal-Related, Animal Services, Animal Training, Animals

Mission: Eleventh Hour Rescue is a fully registered 501C(3) nonprofit, volunteer based organization dedicated to saving the lives of innocent dogs and cats on death row. Many of them are rescued at their Eleventh Hour--when they are scheduled to be put to death by other shelters that can no longer care for them. We give our dogs and cats all the medical attention they require, a place to live, and through our extensive adoption services, a second chance at a happy and fulfilled life. Eleventh Hour Rescue is not subsidized by government grants and receives no major corporate funding. We rely solely on the generosity of our volunteers, the community and animal lovers everywhere. The heart-wrenching stories we read and the numbers of those we can’t help are overwhelming. Every day we are haunted by the faces of those we can’t save. We cannot stop. We will not stop, until all of the cages are empty.

I’ve adopted 2 pups from Eleventh Hour. The cliche about who rescued who definitely applies.Recently I began volunteering and can now see first hand the care and love the volunteers show these dogs and the important vetting process to make sure a prospective adopter and his/her potential new family member are a watch. There is genuine joy and happiness when a pup finds their furever home.

I started fostering for Eleventh Hour Rescue in 2024. It is a terrific place to volunteer. The animals are loved and given wonderful care. This is the place to volunteer, foster, or adopt.

I have adopted 5 cats and 1 dog from Eleventh Hour Rescue. I have volunteered at EHR for the past 8 years. I have also fostered for them. EHR is an amazing organization, staffed primarily by dedicated volunteers and fosters. The energy, the love, the caring and the teamwork of its volunteers is what makes this rescue so successful. I am always impressed with the care that they give to restore the health of the very sick animals and to rehabilitate those that have been traumatized by horrible treatment in their previous homes. I am very proud to be a volunteer with EHR!

I was so blessed to land on the pathway to Eleventh Hour almost 10 years ago. We were given the opportunity to foster and love many homeless fur people. This was an excellent learning experience for my children and myself as it was an exercise in patience, empathy, animal training and animal care. The staff at Eleventh Hour are dedicated to helping these homeless love muffins and I am pleased to witness their caring and loving spirit first hand. All the fur friends entering Eleventh Hour are treated with such love. It is a beautiful experience to be a part of.

I recently started volunteering, and out of the few weeks I've been here, I really enjoy the vibe and energy from the people that volunteer here as well. I can see that they all have big hearts and love cats and dogs and want nothing but the best for them. My kind of people.

I’ve been volunteering with EHR for 4 years and it’s truly a place that makes a difference. The amount of dogs we save on a day to day basis and spare no expense - it’s amazing to see.

Some rescues are pretty complicated and difficult to work with. I haven’t had any issues with this rescue so far, everyone is very nice. I also love their events they have!

I was first introduced to this rescue when we adopter our dog, Loki, back in 2012. I was so impressed with the organization that I decided to foster for Eleventh Hour. Never have I met such a dedicated and passionate group of people who spend countless hours helping our dogs, cats, bunnies etc…find safe and loving homes.

I’ve been volunteering and fostering with 11th hr on and off since 2013. They are a great organization that really does care. I’ve had the pleasure of forming strong bonds within the groups while saving animals. What could be better? It’s hard work, but worth it. Come check us out!

I am only giving one star since some of the staff are very kind and responsive. Let me share my experience. I went to an adoption event recently as I have been looking for a dog that I could train as a hospice/Hospital care therapy dog. I found a puppy that I connected with immediately. Her name is Livia and the staff told me she is a mix between a Great Pyrenees and a Calhoun Leopard dog. She had a wonderful temperament and a great vibe. I applied immediately. After 2 days and 2 additional phone calls , I finally got an update. I was approved to adopt but not approved for Livia. Here is the e mail I received :

Patricia, congrats on your approval and thank you so much for your
interest in rescue!

Unfortunately, Livia would not be a good fit for your home. Because of
the breed specific behaviors and problems that can arise, we do
require breed specific experience for dogs like that. They also need
larger homes and yards in order to grow and flourish.

We would love to help you find another dog though - your notes about
being a possible therapy dog brought to mind Bo Brindle. He is an 8mo
boxer/plott mix and he is amazingly loving and submissive. We could
arrange a meet and greet for him with your family and dogs as soon as
tomorrow, if you were interested! Here is his link -
https://ehrdogs.rescuegroups.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=16829671 His
photos do not do him justice and you should see him roll over for
belly rubs :)

Please let us know either way!

Eleventh Hour Rescue

How can a mixed breed dog require breed specific experience? :Larger homes? How do they know how large my home is. I have a 4 br home on an acre of property and within walking distance to a huge dog park.
I later spoke with the person who denied my application for Livia and she continued to tell me how unqualified I was and that " anyone" can have a pitbull so I should consider the dog that they recommended , which is not " described " as a "pittbull". Now I have nothing against pitbulls ,who are wonderful dogs but to me this seems like an old fashioned bait and switch. I have extensive experience with working breed dogs and currently have a Rottweiler and a Labrador retriever.

So at the end of the day, I am just left with a bad taste in my mouth about this rescue. I have heard of similar stories about 11th hour but I didn't let that deter me.

Just putting this out there that they are not what they seem and the statement that "anyone can have a pittbull" seems to be a bit shady to me. Does that mean that you have to have experience with chihuahuas to adopt one.

While my application is approved, I would not adopt a dog from them if it were free.

I adopted a cat (Smoke) and a dog (Sandy) from them several years ago. They were so helpful and worked really hard to find the 2 that could coexist. Sandy was an older girl and sadly wasn't with us very long, it's never really long enough though, is it. I had such a great experience with them, that I adopted another dog (Hank). I have recommended them to friends and family. 11th Hour is a great place!

3 years ago we adopted our best friend, Chloe (formally known as Myra-Harvard). She is our first dog, and is the most incredible gift in our lives.

I remember seeing her photo on the EHR website and thinking she looked beautiful. The day my husband and I went down to Rockaway to look at a few dogs my husband said to me, "We're not coming home with a dog today." and I said, "of course not, we're just going to look". Well, from the moment she jumped into my arms, she instantly stole my heart. I didn't even need to say anything; my husband just knew this dog was coming home with us.

We are completely amazed, bemused, and delighted by Chloe's sweet and loving demeanor. Full of energy, she enjoys her long walks and time at the dog park, but is also a total cuddle-bug. With her tail always wagging, she LOVES everyone she meets. She follows us everywhere we go, lays on the floor while we cook, sits at our feet while we eat, and curls up on our laps when we're watching TV.

Thank you Eleventh Hour for granting us the privilege of being Chloe's new family. We feel incredibly blessed to have this beautiful, darling, loving, furry little soul in our home. We are so grateful to everyone who had a part in taking care of her long the way. To the volunteers and workers at EHR who give countless hours, long nights and weekends, and make terrific personal sacrifices in order to ensure these dogs get the love and attention they deserve.....thank you. It is because of you, and because of the positive experience we had adopting Chloe that I made the decision to become a volunteer myself. We are forever grateful to you and to this organization for bringing this wonderful bundle of energetic joy into our lives.

Eleventh Hour is a great rescue as far as how much they love their animals. Unfortunately that gets in the way of their proper care. They can't afford to treat them properly, they stuff tons of puppies into small crates, and the management just doesn't seem to care anymore. Volunteers are great though. All very friendly and do what they can to make up what the staff doesn't.

I have adopted from EHR and volunteered, they are such awesome people, they never stop saving animals, there is always so much to do!! rescuing, vetting, fostering, placing in good homes. I cannot believe how much time is put into everything, such big hearts!! I am very proud to say I volunteer for Eleventh Hour rescue. Often if I have a shirt or jacket on with our logo, people ask if I work for EHR, I say no, I volunteer for EHR. It is not like work, it is lifesaving , no matter if you spend lots of time or a little. It all adds up to a great team of people, saving thousands of innocent animals.

Eleventh Hour Rescue works tirelessly to help puppies and dogs in states where overpopulation is a huge problem. I volunteer with a rescue in Texas that saves dogs from High Kill Shelters and helps the community members when they have found a stray dog or have had puppies abandoned near their homes and property. These lucky dogs go on to find wonderful forever homes through Eleventh Hour Rescue in New Jersey! Eleventh Hour Rescue works to not only save animals in their own community, but reaches out to help other states in need. Their main priority is always the best family for each dog. I would recommend adding your next fluffy family member through an adoption from Eleventh Hour Rescue!

It is a huge undertaking and we are proud of the excellant care we give the animals that we have taken in. Please help us to help them

Hello, I adopted a puppy from 11th hour rescue in Rockaway NJ. It was our family pet, I have an 8 year old daughter who was super happy about getting the dog. On Day 5 of having the dog she got sick and stopped eating. She would not drink and was vomiting. I rushed her to the local animal hospital on Monday night. The Animal hospital immediately called 11th hour rescue but nobody answered the phone or called us back. Since Monday night we have called and emailed them at least once a day. Nobody responded until Thursday around 3:00 on Thanksgiving Day. This was after the dog was under care of the Animal Hospital Mon- Thurs. the 11th hour will only pay the dogs medical bills from Friday on. They are refusing to take responsibility for the bills from Mon - Thurs which are 1350. And they refuse to reimburse my adoption fee of 425. They also refuse to respond to emails and phone calls inquiring about payment. I spoke to them yesterday and they stated the reason they won’t pay Mon - Thurs is because I should have gotten in touch with them first, prior to going to a vet. That would mean the dog would have needed to wait 4 days before receiving medical care, which would have resulted in death. I have the call logs and emails to prove that I tried contacting them from the very beginning. They are just ignoring me at this point. It is Christmas and we did something nice by rescuing a dog without a home, but we cannot afford these bills. And my daughter is completely devastated. There is a chance that the dog may not survive. She is still hospitalized and we visit her every day. A lawyer from their organization contacted me finally this morning via email and told me that I would not be compensated and not to contact their organization anymore.

All I can say is WOW! This rescue goes above and beyond...They are volunteer based but function like a well orchaestrated organization. I've had nothing but an amazing experience with them. The facility, the volunteers, everything about this rescue resembles nothing but love and dedication to all the thousands of animals they save. Thank you Eleventh Hour Rescue for giving our family 2 amazing dogs. Eleventh Hour had taken my little female dog out of a kill shelter.. she had a broken leg and some internal stuff going on.

I adopted my girl in 2008 and have never been happier... AND, 11th hour had paid all the vet bills for her prior. I gave them a donation with my adoption fee. Without this rescue my little girl would have suffered and been put down in a kill shelter. couldn't imagine our lives without our pets. Thank you Eleventh Hour Rescue for not giving up on them... ever.

We adopted a dog from 11th hours animal rescue in 2012 and they were very helpful and honest. I felt they did a great job matching us up with the right dog for our lifestyle. Some shelters we visited did not ask us any questions about our home or lifestyle and tried to to push us into adopting every dog we visited with. The staff at 11th hour were not pushy and it seemed they had the dogs best interest in mind. The dog they suggested for us is fantastic and fit right in with our way of life. Great people.

We adopted our first dog through Eleventh Hour in March 2012. The staff at the Mt. Olive PetSmart was friendly, helpful and patiently answered all of our questions. Pistol had been fostered, so the foster mom was there to give us insight into his habits, disposition, etc. We had a wonderful experience and when it came time to adopt our second this past March, we ended up right back at EHR. Our application hadn't been reviewed yet and it was late in the evening, yet they took the time to call the references right then and there so we could take Allie home with us that night. To give an example of going "above and beyond", we learned that Allie's brother Max was being brought up from TN the following month. He was heartworm positive and couldn't make the trip with Allie. Even though we couldn't handle getting another dog, they were more than happy to give us a meeting room so Allie and Max could have a reunion. We were told to drop by any time to visit. Seeing the caring way they treat all of the animals gives me some comfort that the animals are well taken care of until they get adopted.

Volunteering with Eleventh Hour Rescue literally saved my life. I was having a very tough time and finally decided to reach out and do something good for a cause I care about. I have only been volunteering for 5 months, but I already feel like a part of the EHR family. I have gotten to do so many great things, met amazing people, and helped save the lives of deserving dogs and cats. This organization seeks to save all dogs regardless of age/breed. The people work so hard and are always willing give more.
