Last summer was my son's third summer at E.C.M.C.'s Cultural American Multidisciplinary Program (C.A.M.P.). I can honestly say that it has been the best group activity with kids his age that he has ever participated in. E.C.M.C. is a program that advocates for the children in the Florida Keys. Many of the kids are from lower income families or from the Foster Care homes and do not have the funds for tuition. Also many of the middle class families in the Keys cannot afford an Intensive High End program like this. In places like New York City , this program would cost upwards of 1,500.00 per child, but ECMC does it for much much less because of the extensive need that kids have here in this area for Culture. Our keys kids are more inclined to get in to drugs or underage drinking because of the lack of things to do and even a lack of places to go in the Keys. We are a narrow strip of Islands with no malls and we do not have the big museums and often do not have the level of cultural exposure that kids on the mainland have. With the CAMP program, kids get over 5 weeks of all day every day exposure to the things they want and need to be exposed to. My son is interested in Music. CAMP has world class music instructors recruited from all over. One year my son received lessons on his trombone from an instructor who marched in the Queen of England's marching band. CAMP's guitar instructor has PhD. They have so many areas that kids can develop interests in. There is STOMP, which is a well known dance/music style now, thanks to the original STOMP group. CAMP got to travel to Fort Lauderdale ( a very special treat for many of our flip flop clad keys kids ) to see the actual Stomp group perform last summer. The kids in stomp classes at CAMP put on their own truly impressive performance CAMPS big events -The Saturday in the Park Event and at the Final Performance Event. CAMP kids also get to choose from Ballet, Ballroom dancing (very popular and very very impressive), Theater, Keyboards, Jazz Band, Guitar, Concert Band and much much more, including Music theory and song writing. CAMP isn't just about music either. They have a culinary program, too, that is awesome. They also added Art last year and I forgot to mention Choir/vocals and Poetry/songwriting. If you could only see these kids dancing to the fox trot with the other kids in the Concert Band actually playing the music for the dancing! It is truly amazing. My son loved the Ballroom dancing. He is normally not coordinated, but the instructor is an expert. She also teaches boys how to treat girls and teaches girls how they should be treated by a boy. I cannot even take the time to tell you how wonderful the program is. And transportation is provided! The keys are a long island Chain, so kids from the upper keys (Key Largo to islamorada) and kids from Key West and Big Pine Key all get bused every Monday thru Friday at 7:30 AM to the Marathon High School where CAMP is held. But CAMP is desperately in need of funds. The economy has caused a few important grants to fall through and so many kids depend on CAMP each summer to keep them busy with wonderfully fullfulling educational fun for most of the summer while mom and dad work. I cannot say enough about how awesome the Educational Coalition of Monroe County (E.C.M.C.) and although they help advocate for Keys kids in more ways than just through CAMP. I have experienced watching my son grow each summer and develop friendships and learn and earn self esteem through the Cultural American Multidisciplinary Program (C.A.M.P.).
