Programs: East Side Learning Center (ESLC) tutored more than 445 children in the 2015-16 school year. Together, 295 volunteer, 28 professional tutors and 10 staff members provided 20,145 hours of one-on-one tutoring to Pre-K, Kindergarten and first, second and third grade students. Community volunteers trained and guided by professional staff provide nearly 50% of the tutoring. Our criteria for success includes working with schools to ensure each of our students receives at least 30 hours of tutoring. Of student who reached this benchmark in 2015-16: An average of 95 percent of the children in the schools where we serve receive free or reduced meals. Their families cannot afford professional tutoring. Finally, we partner with schools where 70 to 80 percent of students cannot read at grade level. Without ESLC's free tutoring program, these children are four times more likely to drop out of school.
