If not for providing 3 meals and a bed, I would leave immediately if I wasn’t in a wheelchair. The shelter manager has GREAT delusions that she is queen that gets dead cats delivered to her and the Respite Manager lies repeatedly so get ready to get your hopes down. Sort of adds more anxiety to being homeless and you wake up every morning thinking is this the day they put me out and I don’t have anywhere to go?

A close personal friend of mine took his own life a few years ago. At the time, he was struggling with mental illness and was unable to find work or stable housing. Despite this, and despite our friendship and his loving family, my friend was too proud to ask for help. He was one of those people who fall through the cracks in society, but are too proud to burden friends and family with his problems.

If my friend had found a place like the East Oakland Community Project, I am confident he could have gotten the help he needed to find ground underneath his feet, and perhaps could have gone on with his life. He could have gotten a roof over his head, medical advice, treatment, and help with job placement and skills training.

I can think of no better charity to honor my friend's life than EOCP, and I give a percentage of my income every year to their organization. The executive director and staff at every level are wonderful human beings. Please help support this worthwhile and needed service to Alameda County and beyond. EOCP truly save lives and provides dignity and levity for people and families in our communities.
