Mission: East lake initiative (eli) was founded in 2010 after tutors working in the local elementary school noticed that many students lived transient lifestyles due to lack of affordable and safe housing. Eli was formed to help families navigate the obstacles that are blocking their path to home ownership. Our mission is to partner to strategically provide holistic community development within the greater east lake area. Through our 25 year commitment to this community, we are working to foster thriving city blocks in the areas around barrett elementary and ossie ware mitchell middle school. Programs: Housing program- added 2 new homes in our launch housing program bringing our total 9 renovated homes with families living in them and receiving program services to work toward homeownership. We were also awarded the collaboration institute's 2gen hub grant for $100,000. This is a collaborative project providing wrap-around services for single women and their families which will launch in the winter of 2019. East lake neighborhood garden co-op program - a partnership with the birmingham land bank, east lake neighborhood association, and barrett elementary school. This project serves as a great bridge builder in the community and provides an opportunity for greater access to healthy produce in an area defined as a food desert. In 2017, east lake neighborhood garden co-op added capacity with a second lot and a new garden collaboration- project hope in conjunction with taziki's restaurant. This herb garden will be used to teach job skills to people from the neighborhood.
