I have been volunteering with this company for many years. I have watched Margarette help numerous people not just overcome their struggles but give them hope and bring back their confidence. What I have learned from this place is that if you truly love what you do, it’s not a job. This center and the team behind it genuinely cares for their community. Beyond the scope of helping people overcome their learning disabilities, they give them so much that they will carry with them for the rest of their life. I have been volunteering here for over 10 years and the reason I still do is because it fills me with so much joy to watch Margarette interact with her students and watch their progress from when they start to where they are now. I wish that I had teachers as passionate as she is growing up.

The Dyslexia Center of The Pacific has impacted my life in ways I can't explain. I have seen Margarette and Angel work tirelessly to help struggling families get the help or education they deserve. They have taught me more than overcoming my dyslexia but also what it means to give back to your community and to have passion for what you do. I started as a student and ended up becoming a volunteer because I was inspired. I would not be where I am today if it had not been for DCP.

This non-profit organization has been around for 20+ years started by a wonderful woman by the name of Margarette Pang. She has made terrific progress with the children, teenagers, and adults that have come across DCP for help, including my child. Our 'Ohana is so very grateful that God guided us to her as we did not know where to turn for guidance and help regarding Dyslexia.

Not only that but I believe that DCP has also helped and continues to help many local people here in the Cook Islands and our community. We are all so very greatful for all that DCP does here on our little paradise

Aloha, I am the Founder of the Dyslexia Center of the Pacific, Inc. (DCP) and have volunteered my professional services for the past 9-years out of 20-years. I LOVE what I do, the HOPE I provide, students I get to know, parents that become family ('Ohana) to me and DCP. Every donation that DCP has received stays in the State of Hawaii to keep DCP open as there are very few services and specialist in Dyslexia here in Hawai'i. Dyslexia Center of the Pacific, formerly known as, Dyslexia Tutoring Center of Hawaii has survived for 20-years in Hawai'i and I am so PROUD of each parent, student, schools, professionals, and community that we have previously and continue to serve today.
Mahalo Nui Loa from the bottom of my heart to each and everyone who has believed and continue to support our services.

DCP has been a GOD sent blessing to our daughter who struggles with Dyslexia and Disgraphia. We've tried so many different types of tutoring services in the past, and unfortunately, none of them were able to help our daughter move forward in her learning journey. As a parent, I remember feeling so frustrated to 1. not be able to help my own child, and 2 not being able to find her the support she needed to be successful until we found DCP! We Mahalo Margarette & Angel from the bottom of our hearts for their ability to connect with my child and truly understand her needs. I thank them for their love, their dedication to serve, support, and build up our Keiki. Today, my daughter is a strong and confident reader because of the skills she has learned through this wonderful center. Mahalo Nui DCP ❤️

Aloha, Im Lexi I want to thank Aunty Margarette and Aunty Angel for all of their hard work. I appreciate everything they have done for me. Without Dyslexia Center Of The Pacific Inc Dcp I wouldn't be where I am now. For example when I was zooming with Aunty Margarette she had me type a story about my trip to Disneyland, time had passed and I finished with 12 pages full of details with over 3,000 words, and me myself didn't even know I could do that. This showed me that even though I have Dyslexia, it doesn't make me different from others it makes me better. I feel that they have definitely prepared me for intermediate, and again from the bottom of my heart for everything they have done for me.
Love, Lexi.

Aloha, I'm Lexi and I have Dyslexia, I don't really share this with people because I feel embarrassed. When my mom told me I had a tutor I was really upset because then that would mean extra learning. After some time of getting to know Auntie Margarette and Angel I eventually found it fun. I have been with Dyslexia Center Of The Pacific through out 4th grade and 5th grade and they have made my learning so much better. Auntie Margarette and Angel have took the time to teach kids about Dyslexia. They told me that having Dyslexia doesn't change you it makes you unique. The days I have tutor with Auntie Margarette and Angel they always make my day better, and because of Auntie Margarette and Angel my reading and spelling have gotten so much better. I appreciate all there hard work and even if they are tired or not feeling well they still hop on zoom and tutor us. I'am not starting 6th grade at Kamehameha Schools, but now that means another fantastic year with them. Thank you and I love you guys for what you have done and for teaching us things that other can't teach.

DCP could improve by receiving funding to hire and train additional tutors, and educate more students. Thank you for sharing the information on all of these worthy nonprofits!!

Margarette and Angel have been so amazing. My son has ADHD and Dyslexia. He stared tutoring during covid in the middle of 1st grade. At the time he could not read a single word. They have worked endlessly and patiently and now in the 4th grade he's able to read a chapter book to me. He loves them and always comes home wanting to talk about his session and what he enjoyed. In fact he's the one that encouraged me to take this survey. He asked me "mommy are you happy with how they've helped me" and I said "very", then he said "then please take the survey". I am familiar with a family who has enjoyed your tutoring services to support students with dyslexia, boost their self-confidence and educate family support network to understand learning differences. I have also had the privilege of working with people, who confided they struggled with dyslexia, and found them to be highly intelligent. They learned later in life that they had dyslexia, and I am sure if they had known when they were younger, it would have made a tremendous difference in how they studied and learned as well as with their self-confidence. Educating teachers and counselors in the resources your organization has to offer would help more students and families. Even knowing how to identify concerns or issues early on would be helpful so students do not need to feel so alone and have to overcompensate with how they progress. Thank you for all the good work you offer to our community! BB Aunty

This has helped her throughout elementary, middle school, and now high school. Even though she no longer attends DCP, the skills she's learned there has helped her to succeed tremendously in her education. She was inducted into the Junior National Honor Society and has held a 4.0 every year. I am so proud of all of her hard work and learned how best to help her as a parent. In my eyes, DCP goes above and beyond to help their community, which is why am I am proud to be apart of this center. Watching the time and effort that Margarette and Angel put into DCP and helping their students is really inspiring. I have seen them put in extra time when they don\u2019t have to work just to help educate parents because of the lack of education on dyslexia. They take extra time to even make their students comfortable enough to open up and it\u2019s truly beautiful to watch over time the bond they make and how their students are able to come out of this shell and have their confidence grow. Margarette has such a passion for what she does, finding something like that I think is rare.

When our son started struggling in school last year and all the signs pointed to dyslexia, we felt so helpless and didn’t know where or how to get him the help he needed. We are so grateful to have found the Dyslexia Center of the Pacific! Our son has been working with Margarette and Angel for only a few short months and we’ve seen so much progress in his school work and his confidence! As outer island clients we love the convenience of having our son connect remotely to the center and his tutors! We will forever be grateful to DCP for all they do for our family.

I am so happy and blessed to have come across Margarette and Angel Pang. They truly played such a HUGE role in all my kids lives. She has taught my children that they can exceed and be successful in area of struggle as long as they never give up. She taught them to have more confidence and how to overcome their struggles. I can’t wait for her to help my other children build that confidence and overcome their struggles as well. They always go above and beyond for the kids, they are sincere in their actions and purely do this for the love of the Keiki and to see them happy. I’m forever grateful and blessed!

I have been a part this center since its conception. I have seen, first hand, the passion and heart that Margarette has put into it. I have been lucky enough to meet the students who lives have been touched by DCP. How these students, children through adults, have grown as individuals and gained knowledge & self confidence. As an individual with dyslexia, I know this center has and continues to make a difference. Often times, the students that come to DCP have no where else to go and no one to help them. To see these students blossom into strong empowered individuals, equipped with the skills to help themselves, is a beautiful thing. I am proud to be able to be a part of all the good work DCP has done and continues to do. I hope to continue to be part of it for years to come.

As a former public official, appointed and elected, I have interacted with a multitude of nonprofit organizations over three (3) decades and it is very rare to come across an organization that is not just committed to its mission but passionate as well. I have seen the Dyslexia Center of the Pacific grow from its infancy to where, in my opinion, is now a sophisticated and valued asset for our State with respect to servicing those with dyslexia. I am proud of their work and especially humbled that Pegi Pang has allowed me to support its endeavors through the years. The State of Hawaii would be best served to formally adopt the Dyslexia Center of the Pacific as its partner in ensuring that those who face challenges with dyslexia are given the resources to succeed academically, socially and professionally. The Dyslexia Center of the Pacific (DCP) under the guidance of Margarette has played an important role in the development and growth of the underserved youth and adults in our community. I am very thankful for all that Margarette and Angel has done to help change the lives for several of my family members. DCP gave them the skills to become comfortable and confident in not only school but in life. Margarette and Angel understands that each person learns differently. They pay special attention to the person’s strengths and weaknesses thereby tailoring each session to fit those needs. I have personally watched a cousin who has always been shy and withdrawn begin to blossom and attain confidence in his ability to read, write, and communicate. Margarette created a unique opportunity for students that have completed the program. Those students were able to become tutors and help others who are struggling. DCP has touched so many lives and not only helped the child or adult in need but also helped their families to understand and recognize the difficulties that these individuals face every day. I highly recommend anyone that needs help or knows someone that needs help to reach out to DCP.

Having known Margarette for many, many years, watching her children grow up and struggle in school as she did when we were kids, was not easy. As time went by and we had kids of our own, Margarette sought further education in the field of Dyslexia and AD/HD because she wanted to provide her children and others the opportunity to succeed in school and life. Growing up in Hawaii, no one knew what dyslexia was and how to help someone with it. It has been misdiagnosed, mislabeled, and misunderstood. These children are not "lazy & stupid" as they were classified, instead, they are highly intelligent. If you suspect your child has dyslexia, in need of help, someone to talk to, or looking for HOPE, contact the Dyslexia Center of the Pacific. They have been around for 16+ years and provided online educational services nationwide. We are lucky to have them here in Hawaii supporting the Pacific.

Many of our family members are affected by Dyslexia. There wasn't a place like this for them to learn how to cope with it emotionally or to be educated. They had to deal with bullying and feeling incompetent. Thank You ladies for helping these children, teens, and adults.

Our grand daughter has ADHD and Dyslexia and for the past two years we have sought help for her. We see her struggle to keep up with her class and the frustration she exhibits when overwhelmed. Eventually, we were made aware of Margarette and Angel at the DCP and began inquiries as to how they may be able to help our situation. This is where hope began.

Typically, an institution takes your information, follows their protocol and any further engagement is at the will of the client. At the DCP, the concern that Margarette has for the whole person establishes their excellence and sets them apart. The follow up from Margarette to offer additional information, inquire about my grand daughters well-being, and to see how we are coping sets them apart as people who truly care.

My appreciation and thankful heart goes out to the DCP who provides not only professional help, but hope to those who need it.

Aloha my son was with DCP for 2 school years. He was diagnosed with dyslexia in 2nd grade. My sons test scores were low especially in Language Arts he hated to do any school work that would involve Language Arts. When they suggested that he start tutoring for his dyslexia I agreed. Since my son started at DCP his confidence in himself increased tremendously and his test scores increased tremendously and he was super proud of himself. We are sad that we had to stop his tutoring due to us moving to the mainland but I love the staff at DCP and how they tutor you can tell they do this from their heart and they so much passion to help kids with dyslexia. They always go over and beyond to help a child. I will never find another tutoring agency like DCP my son misses them so verg much and he said he felt at home and felt like family with the staff. Mahalo nui DCP for helping my son with his Language Arts your agency has brought back his confidence in himself and now he believes in himself. Dyslexia Center of the Pacific, Inc. “SAVED” our family.

Our daughter entered preschool and it was clear that her speech was not age appropriate. She was tested and deemed speech delayed by the standards of the State of Hawaii Department of Health. She qualified to receive speech therapy from Easter Seals at no cost. This service ended when my daughter aged out. Yet, she still needed the assistance. The medical insurance did not cover because there was no coverage for “developmental speech therapy services.” We opted for private speech therapy that meant we paid out of pocket. We continued until we no longer could afford this service.

When she read out loud during kindergarten to 1st grade school years, she would skip words and replace them with her own that fit the content. Her teachers would tell me that my practice to correct her was not supported by them because it was affecting her self esteem. From their perspective, I was discouraging my child to read because I would always correct her words that she read incorrectly. Thus, I was hindering her progress.

She passed through private school systems in kindergarten and 1st grade. Enrolled in the public school system in 2nd grade and received speech therapy and reading proficiency services. In 3rd grade we enrolled in a tutoring program. Finally in 4th grade, she had a difficult time completing her school work. I asked her public school teacher to get her tested, but we were denied because her behavior and grades did not support the “need” to test her. I called all around town and found a Psychologist that would run a battery of tests. Eight hours of testing, two hours for four days. The tests confirmed the diagnoses of Specific Learning Disorder with Impairment in Reading, Dyslexia. This in layman’s terms results in educational difficulties, articulation difficulties, difficulties with graphomotor coordination. This learning disability is not minor or temporary. Nor is it irreversible. It’s a lifetime disability.

We finally got to the origin of our daughter’s challenges. It came with mix emotions because on one hand we were elated because all the struggles now had a “name or explanation.” Yet, on the other hand we sought services from physicians to audiologists to school teachers to speech therapists to social workers to case managers to tutors that ALL MISSED the mark that her speech impediment was linked to a learning disability.

We soon learned that we could not help her because we were not properly trained and schooled to tutor our child. We are faced with costly options: Hire a tutor or enroll her at a school that specializes in teaching dyslexic students.

We started tutoring immediately. Now that we had a certified medical diagnosis on hand she received an Individualized Education Plan, better known as IEP to provide her with the necessary accommodations. After being tutored with the Orton-Gillingham approach for over a year and approximately six months, I questioned both her tutor and school teacher if it would be in her best interest to remain in the public school system. Both graciously denied. One explained that this is a critical time for her and without the proper resources we would see a decline in her school work because the subjects will be more challenging and difficult to comprehend.

For that reason, we applied and she got accepted in a school program that offered assistance for her learning disability so we stopped her tutoring service. After a year in this school program, her test results confirmed she was still behind in reading. Matter of fact two years behind.

She was not making any progress so I made a number of calls and sent e-mails locally and nationally to find help. I spoke to some and corresponded to others by e-mail, but I did not feel that their services would be the right fit because they were sales pitches.

The call made to the Dyslexia Center of the Pacific, Inc. changed our lives forever.

Margarette patiently listened to me explain all the different events and obstacles that we faced as a family. I did not meet her in person, but from this phone call alone I felt so at ease because she clearly understood. All the downs we had she could personally relate to from her personal experience and clients that she tutored.

I immediately rearranged our schedule to fit her in to get tested. Margarette explained the test results with me and validated that she was behind in reading. She also explained that she will work with our daughter, but our daughter would have to do the work too. I totally agreed and understood. That was the fear I personally was facing because our daughter has been working at this for years. I was afraid that she would give up. She worked with all the specialists, different tutors and attended a school that assisted with learning disability, but she was still behind. It was not due to our daughter’s lack of effort, but the right kind of tutoring.

Our daughter enjoyed her sessions with Margarette and Angel. Their compassion and love to want to help is AMAZING! As a parent, I know that her success is directly related to the services she received from the Dyslexia Center of the Pacific, Inc. They tutored her for school and mentored her about real life.

She is now a freshman at a private school enrolled in all honor classes with the exception of her Math course because she is taking a sophomore level course in Geometry.

We are forever grateful for all the guidance and unconditional love we received from Margarette and Angel. The services we received from them are PRICELESS.

When a child is struggling in school it impacts all parts of their life as well as the family unit. The frustrations, the ups and downs, the hurt, the tensions, the financial impact, "what next," "when is this going to end?"

We were "SAVED" by Margarette and Angel of the Dyslexia Center of the Pacific, Inc.

Aloha, my name is Margarette Pang and this is my story of HOPE!

When I was a child there were only a few people who are truly “special” and for me it was my tutu (grandmother). There are many things that she taught me while I was growing up and I would like to share some of those things with you. My tutu taught me how to BELIEVE in myself, have COMPASSION for others, and to be PROUD and not ashamed of whom I am. To UNDERSTAND my cultural background and know that what I do in life needs to come from my heart and not from my waha (mouth). I was a very special part of her life and she was a very special part of mine. She shared her most wonderful memories with me that not many have had the privilege to hear. I later realized that many of the stories she shared would be lessons of encouragement and inspiration throughout my life, lessons I continue to use till this day.

My tutu was born in 1892 and of Polynesian/Chinese descent. We resided in Nuʽuanu, and as a little girl I remember sitting before her on the parlor floor anxiously waiting for a new story, as I closed my eyes she spoke, and I became overwhelmed in her heavenly voice. The memories flowed from her lips and embraced me with every story, taking me to a whole new world, a world where I have never been before.

The Rose and the Wall Flower is one of my favorite stories. It speaks of how the Wall Flower is always trying to hurt the delicate rose. A Wall Flower will become our hurdles in life. They are the type of individuals that are always gossiping, targeting, harassing, cheating, pointing the finger, trying to cause harm to others, and never giving the Rose a chance. A Rose is special! It is delicate and doesn’t always survive, but with the right kind of love and care it will bloom into a beautiful flower. A Rose is unique and stands out from the rest. It brings JOY and HAPPINESS to those that appreciate its beauty and fragrance. But when someone tries to hurt or pick that Rose, they’ll get pricked by its thorns, its protection. Tutu would tell me that I was her Rose and she was my thorns, my protection. She often said “you will shine among the best, but be humbled from within, and always care for other Roses”. She said that my heart is the key to my future. She was right!

I have immense PASSION for what I have created and the work I do every day by helping others. I THANK GOD (ME KE AKUA) for blessing me with a special role model like my tutu. I miss and love her so much! I am blessed with my children who each share a special part of her, as well as myself. I recall as a child, the humiliation, ridicule, and shame I felt when I could not master reading, writing, or spelling like other children. I wanted so much to go to college, but never tried because of the fear of failing. I refused to be known as an embarrassment to my family. As a child, I was misled to believe that I was not as smart as others, but after having children of my own I could see the same struggles in them that I myself experienced. Their battles helped me face our challenges head on. I needed to find a way to help them, so my children and others, would not have to go through the horror of what I experienced.

“Education is so important for all of us! We all learn differently and are unique in our own special way. Unfortunately, our society is quick to judge us on our weaknesses instead of praising us for our strengths. This could “make or break” a child as they are growing up and effect their self-esteem through adulthood. Taking the time to look through the eyes of another is not much to ask, understanding them could make all the difference in the world, having compassion is rare. To know me is to love me not to hurt, abuse, or judge me” by Margarette PM Pang

I was honored to be one of Margret Pang’s students. As an adult I had struggled with reading and writing my whole life, yet I was a successful Account Executive at the number one radio station in Hawaii. I had not graduated from High School due to family issues and moving schools so many times in my life. No one knew just how bad it was for me, so when my 16 year old son wanted to quit school and he said to me, “But mom you didn’t graduate and look at you, you’re doing great.” I told him it wasn’t something I was proud of and that I had to work ten times harder to do everything than anyone else. I pleaded with him to stay in school and told him that I would go back and get my GED if he did. The rest of the story goes like this: I went to Kalaheo High School for continuing adult education. My first 3 nights of school I drove home in tears! Thinking how can I do this? I was all over the place and confused about how I could be doing the JOB that I did not be able to understand anything the teacher was asking us to do. It was OVERWHELMING to say the least. On the third night driving home, I heard a commercial talking about “if you have issues with reading and think you might be dyslexic there is help”... well I called that night and left a message then called back the next day and was connected to the most patient, kind and giving person, Margret Pang. She walked me through the process and I was on my way. Twelve weeks later I walked across the stage with a HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA! The day I took my test I was promoted to be a manager and 6 years later became the GM of 7 amazing Salem Media of Hawaii Radio Stations. I can’t thank her enough for giving me the ability to achieve all of my dreams and even some I didn’t realize I had.
Thank you GOD for Margret Pang!!!!

A year ago my son was diagnosed with ADHD & Dyslexia. I went to his school for help in assisting him with his disability. The school turned me away saying that he is not eligable for assistance. I did not know where to turn. I called back the doctor that diagnosed my son and she gave me a list of about 6 places I could call for private tutoring. I called all names that was given to me. The next day, my prayers were answered. Margarette Pang was on the other line. She spent almost an hour on the ohone with me explaining what her center would do to help my some overcome his Dyslexia. From the first time we walked into the doors of the DTCH, we felt like family and we knew this is where we belonged. Margarette was and still is the only person that ever called me back to help my son. That just goes to show how much heart & soul she puts into each child that walks through those doors. I can't imagine where my son would be today without her and her amazing staff. I thank them everyday for everything they have done. God sure put an "Angel" on this earth to do good in the lives of others. Thank you Margarette for being our "Angel". We love you.

I would like to let everyone know about a very special woman by the name of Margarette Pang. She is the Founder and Executive Director for DTCH and received the 2008 Kapolei Outstanding Achievement Award for Education, the 2009 Certificate of Award for Outstanding Community Service Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the 2009 Jefferson Award. She overcame her battle with dyslexia and understands the hardships and stigma that are partnered with this disability. Margarette has the passion, heart, and drive to keep this non-profit center open, but DTCH could definately use your contribution to help all the children that they have reached out to. Not only do they help the children that no one else wants to help, Margarette and DTCH opens their hearts and doors to the ones that can't afford it. They try their very best to accomidate everyone. I've come across quite a few people that wish they could recieve tutoring from DTCH, but it's out of their budget and they can't find help anywhere else. They want their chilren to get tutored at DTCH and their children want to be tutored at DTCH. This is a place where DTCH's current students want to be! Students at DTCH come from all over the island just to be there. Margarette and her staff have done so much, not only for children, but adolescence as well as young and older adulds. Tutoring isn't the only thing they do at DTCH. Margarette does so much, including giving a wealth of information to better understand your child, your self, or Dyslexia in general.
