Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Working with our compassionate community, we will end pet homelessness and animal suffering. The Dumb Friends League has been committed to helping animals live better lives since 1910. Throughout Colorado, we provide compassionate care through comprehensive services for pets and horses who are vulnerable to homelessness, suffering, and abuse. Over the League’s 113-year history, our work has transformed many times over in response to the ever-evolving needs of animals and the people who love them most. And while change has always been a constant, our dedication to ending pet homelessness and animal suffering has never wavered.

You need to be careful about adopting from the dumb friends league in Denver Colorado.
We adopted a cat, and we took him to their a vet of choice within 3 days nothing was ever mentioned that he has a major heart murmur and allergies. The vet they send you to works with them as well.
We decided to take him to our personal vet. We found out he has a Major heart murmur which was 4 in range from 1 to 6, 6 being the worst, and they didn't say a word to us. Our vet said there's no way they wouldn't have known, and was surprised that we didn't know about. Thank goodness we are the type of people that will take in an animal and give him a good life until they pass.
This cat is only 2 years old.
If you're looking for a young cat or a dog please do not go through them. They lied to us and cover it up by sending us to their vet and her not saying anything to us, as well. I will be writing a review on her too.
I think about all the children that want to get a dog or cat. They fall in love with them not knowing you will have to put them down within a couple years when you're expecting to have them or at least 10 to 15years. Please don't put your children through that.
These people that work there are liars. They knew what was wrong with my cat before we even adopted him. I just thank God that we had our own vet look at him, a 2 year old domestic Short hair cat so we can get him the help he needs. It has costed us a lot of money and now we're just trying to give him a happy home until we have to put him down.
Also, I will not be surprised if this is not posted because I'm giving them a one star rating. You only see good reviews on this page. The reason I'm posting this is a test. If this is not posted I am going further with this. People fall in love with their animals and they become your children and family. They need a voice too.

This is a solid, well-run organization that deserved our support. This is a tough non-profit to operate right now, but DDFL keeps trucking along, managing a tough environment with determination and grit. The volunteers are animal lovers, the directors are animal lovers, the vets are tireless animal lovers. It all combines to make one of the best shelters we've encountered. We still ask our kids, in lieu of a gift we don't need, to make a donation in our name for holidays, birthdays and such. And they do! We are proud to say we have always had rescues as pets and always will.

We love Dumb Friends! We've gotten 2 wonderful dogs from them and feel so good supporting an organization that so clearly cares so much for the animals. And, of course, the bonus is we got amazing dogs.

The people are so kind, and so invested in matching you with the pet you want. When we said no to a couple of dogs they showed us, they weren't remotely judgmental, and showed us other candidates until we found exactly who we wanted.

When we adopted our Lily, we already had another dog, a puppy mill rescue, Rose. They had us introduce the two dogs in an outdoor run, and a volunteer was there at all times in case something went wrong. Fortunately, the dogs were great together and Lily has been a wonderful addition to our home. She's 15 now, and we feel lucky every day to have her.

Dumb Friends League has a great and wholesome approach to taking care of the animals that come their way. They put thoughtful time and energy into training and monitoring behavior in order to reduce kill rates. I loved visiting and hope that someday I can bring one of their animals into my home!

this charity is the go to place to adopt animals in Denver. They have wonderful events for the community that raise awareness, enthusiasm and funds. They save many, many lives and have top notch volunteers. However the CEO is drastically overpaid compared to other similar charities. Also as a former volunteer at the San Francisco SPCA, I witnessed far greater effort ensuring animals were healthy before they were exposed to other animals up for adoption. this was done via a quarantine system. Not only does this reduce healthcare costs for the facility, but for the new pet owner as well. I have adopted one sick cat (that made my other cat sick who then needed costly care). I have many friends who adopted from Denver Dumb Friends league. Some of these turned out to be sick as well. Bringing a pet home can already be a stressful time, but it should also be joyous. instead, healthcare challenges that could have been prevented greatly compromise the initial home integration stage.
This charity should reduce to CEOs pay in half and put that toward preventative health care. I hope to see them improve on these aspects. As soon as they do I'll be right back as a donor. they do save lives, but I do think that the community needs to put more pressure for more reasonable CEO pay.

We've adopted cats and dogs from this organization since the early 1990s. DDFL has been doing it's work since the early 1900s in Denver. They accept ALL animals and do their very best to find homes for as many animals as possible. They aren't a no-kill shelter, but they retrain, foster and do everything humanly possible so animals are adoptable and adopted. They have a Behavioral Help Line, people who investigate cruelty complaints and more. They're good people! I can't say enough good things about them!
