Three years ago I wanted to learn more about horses so began volunteering at DreamPower. I had no experience with horses or the equine therapy programs that DreamPower offers to help emotionally and physically challenged children and adults. Martha McNiel and Garry Stauber, who run DreamPower, were very welcoming to a newbie like me and were very patient and generous with their knowledge. They always made me feel valued as a volunteer. I have learned how to understand horse behavior, groom and exercise horses, pick feet, clean stalls and assist in equine therapy lessons by leading a horse or helping to support a rider. One little girl with cerebral palsy really touched my heart. She always wore a bright pink riding helmet and pink boots to match. Her face was filled with joy when she would arrive at the barn to see "Cowboy Garry" and "her pony" Starbright. By encouraging her to do stretching and throwing exercises while she was seated on the horse we helped make her physical therapy fun. Other kids who come to the barn get psychotherapy from certified therapists. The barn environment gives them the opportunity to open up in a way that is not so easy for them to do in a clinical office. Often they have no experience in a rural setting so the horses provoke their curiosity. Over the years I have learned so much about horses at DreamPower that a few months ago I decided to adopt my own little mustang, who now works in the program during the week, helping kids. I have been at the barn nearly every weekend for the past three years because I enjoy the good energy that I get personally from helping this wonderful organization.
