i've worked for downtown streets team in san francisco. the staff members treat the voiunteers badly they talk down to them and the rules change day to day also the people who look into the nonprofits should look into this one I believe they may not be on the up an up
I will echo my fellow board member's review of Downtown Streets Team. There are many organizations trying to help the homeless but this organization motivates the homeless to help themselves with team building and job training. It has grown organically from small beginnings in Palo Alto, CA with noticeable results, to replicating the program in other Bay Area communities. The members and staff develop close ties and look out for each other, celebrating individual achievements at stirring weekly meetings. The Streets Team provides real in-depth solutions that solve the complex issues of homelessness for many individuals. This is an organization to watch and support!

Downtown Streets Team is by far the most stimulating and successful organization that I have had the pleasure of working with in a long history of non-profit work. Their model really works....and sustaining our people once we help them get off the streets is the key...long term solutions as opposed to temporary band-aids. If you read their stories ( streetsteam.org) you will see how very many lives have been touched by their involvement in DST...a leg up, total support towards a goal of re-entering society, a sense of belonging...all these and more are the results enjoyed by our team members. I am honored to serve on the Board, and strongly recommend supporting this very worthwhile endeavor/organization!!.

The Peery Foundation invests in social entrepreneurs addressing youth and poverty in the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world. We've been aware of the Downtown Streets Team (DST) for a couple of years and like many Palo Altans, have been aware of the impact they've had on the homelessness issue in Palo Alto. We decided to visit their weekly meeting a few months ago and left completely inspired by what we saw. DST is having a tangible impact on the lives of the homeless - actually moving them OUT of homelessness to lives of dignity and self-reliance. Our foundation has decided to make an investment in their work as they begin to grow the program to other cities. It is run by a wonderful social entrepreneur with a strong skill-set from a background in venture capital and as a tech CEO. One of the few programs going beyond the safety-net and providing a path out of homelessness.
