Mission: Downtown athletic club hawaii was organized exclusively for the following charitable and educational purposes: (a) to support and advance the sports programs of hawaii's public schools; (b) to aid student athletes in hawaii in achieving their post-secondary educational goals; (c) to foster and provide opportunities for student athletes in hawaii to learn about and experience different cultures; and (d) to promote the participation of hawaii amateur athletes in local, national and international amateur sports competitions.
Programs: Speakers series - events in which prominent persons in, or involved with, sports are invited to speak at a venue in downtown honolulu (hawaii's primary business center), thereby providing easy access for business people to attend and interact with the speakers. The general public is welcome at these events, but downtown athletic club hawaii's intent is that its speaker series serve as a bridge between the business and sports communities. The events have been, are expected to be, broadcast over local radio, live - streamed on the internet, and archived online for greater access by the public free of charge. 2016 downtown athletic club hawaii program results - flag rugby:during the 2015-2016 school year, downtown athletic club hawaii supported a flag rugby afterschool athletics program for middle school students on oahu and hawaii island. The program was created as part of the hawaii department of education's out-of-school time programs, and activities were led by play rugby usa and afterschool all-stars, with hawaii high school athletics association, a 501(c)(3) organization, serving as a fiscal sponsorship partner. Program funding paid for play rugby usa to travel an expert trainer and a retired legend of new zealand's all blacks rugby club to train program site coordinators, program leaders, and interested coaches. A full week of training was completed, laying the foundation for students to learn and train in flag rugby. The following results were achieved: - the rugby4good (r4g) educators based in honolulu worked with the seven (7) selected middle schools in nanakuli/waianae, castle/kahuku and kau/kea'au/pahoa to run flag rugby sessions with their students from october 2015 to january 2016. - 51 staff members trained to coach flag rugby at the following middle schools: waianae, kau, kea'au, nanakuli, jarrett, and central;- 181 different students participated in training sessions conducted by play rugby usa trainers; and- approximately 1,300 training/instructional session experiences (i. E. Cumulative total of participants at all training sessions held with repeat participants counted each time)- king intermediate (kaneohe, hi) hosted the first ever rugby4good flag rugby tournament. Eight (8) middle school teams from the nanakuli/waianae and castle/kahuku areas took part, featuring 62 students. A total of 20 matches were played.
