I want to write this review in honor of my friend who has been helped by this organization. My friend and her husband both had cancer and she now has it for the third time. This organization, as I understand it, is helping her with her children's financial responsibilities, so they can continue to thrive in school. I have had hundreds of tearful phone calls with my girlfriend, crying because all she wants to do is live and be with her kids. I know she loves her husband too but her life is for her kids! This foundation has helped her feel less guilt from the things she can't give her kids, that she probably could, if she were able to work the way she used to. My friend is not someone to take handouts but this foundation was the answer to her prayers, assuring her kids would be taken care of, even if she dies. Her kids will be able to play sports and take advanced placement classes, her daughter is extremely smart. The peace my friend has from this promise of this foundation is so nice to see. When her life has been turn upside down by cancer four times now, it is nice to see peace with my friend. I appreciate what this foundation has done for my friend and her kids.
Hello! I was the first person helped by the Doreen Katz Memorial Foundation. While beginning my second fight with brain cancer, and just being the caregiver to my husband as he finished up his treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma I was feeling pretty discouraged and in need of some serious help! Thankfully my husband and I were blessed with miracle twin babies, along with our seven year old daughter but this left us in a hard spot while trying to care for our own cancers and maintain the lifestyle our children were accustomed to. We were even more devastated when we learned of the need for our daughter to have open heart surgery, along with a CP diagnosis. As you can imagine, money was going quickly to all this medical stuff and paying school fees was quickly approaching. The Doreen Katz Memorial Foundation found us at the perfect time! Not only did the CEO, and founder Adam Katz, come to Children's Hospital and sit with us during our daughters surgery he assured us we had nothing to worry about as far as her school fees. Adam has helped us with school fees for three years now and I can't even put into words how incredibly helpful that has been for our family! As with most marriages the severe lack of funds coming in and the massive amounts of funds needing to go out for medical expenses, brought in some marital stress. When Adam Katz brought over a counselor to our home to be with us to educate us, to help us and to continually support us our lives REALLY changed for the better. Not only is this counselor helping us, she is helping us for free because of Adam Katz and the Doreen Katz Memorial Foundation. This woman is incredible! She is educating us on nutrition, lifestyle changes and our marriage in ways that we have never known before. I can't even tell you the number of times Adam Katz has come to our home to see how we're doing, and see if we are in need. This man, not knowing us at all (when he reached out to me initially) , has ensured, for our children and for us, that our family stays not only together but that we are getting stronger by the day as we beat cancer for my third go at it. He has ensured that our children lives are being consistent and that they feel as little of an impact as they possibly can from this nightmare cancer has brought into our family four times now between my husband and myself. When I lost my job, due to not being released back to work after a major brain surgery, Adam Katz was one of the first people to contact us and see if our kids needed anything! He even offered to buy our Children's Christmas that year. This man and this foundation are doing something no other foundation is doing! He really cares for the children and their parents! This foundation cares for families! I feel we have made a life long friend in Adam, even though we have so much going on and we are awful "friends" at this point. I truly hope this foundation grows and saves more families they way it has truly saved mine! This foundation will forever be carried on by the children it has supported during some of the toughest times in their lives, even if they're to young to know it at the time! I can't thank you enough Adam Katz and the Doreen Katz Memorial Foundation! THANK YOU!
This foundation is truly one of a kind. The idea that it assists young adults/children living in a household with a parent suffering from cancer is tremendous. It's tough enough for the parent(s) to try to find ways to pay for their treatments but then having to find dollars for their children's classes and school activities can be truly heart wrenching. Advanced placement courses, after school sports, and field trips have fees associated unlike the past and these help children grow mentally and physically.
I'm proud to be a part of this organization and hope that in the future, it grows to other states in an effort to help others.
The Doreen Katz Memorial Cancer Foundation is like no other! By helping children who have a parent or parents battling any form of cancer in the form of education as well as access to a network of therapists has proven to be extrmemly beneficial to the families.
As Colorado cuts back on K-12 spending, children of cancer patients are losing out
because they cannot afford to partake in what was once a regular part of the school year.3
Extracurricular activities as well as extra testing and Advanced Placement classes are now
out of pocket expenses. These rising costs can add up to $3,000 per year making it difficult
for every parent, but most especially for children of cancer patients who are already under
the stress of additional medical costs.
The Doreen Katz Memorial Cancer Foundation is here to help students cover these
expenses. We believe children of cancer patients deserve every opportunity at receiving the
best possible educational experience while their parents continue their fight to beat cancer.
The Doreen Katz Memorial Cancer Foundation is also collaborating with the Grief Networking
Alliance. This group is a fully licensed therapy team specializing in Grief Therapy. They meet
with families and help communicate and educate the children of the diagnosis and what to
expect in the treatment cycle. They also offer a voice and a listening ear for the entire family.
The Doreen Katz Memorial Cancer Foundation adopted our family last year after my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33. We have a 6 year old son and a 7 year old daughter and the foundation has gone above and beyond to make sure that our children are supported during this time and also in the future. Adam has done a great job following through on everything that he has promised and then some. We feel so supported from this foundation and can only hope that they keep going strong to help out other families in this situation.
