The Initiative is a much needed nonprofit STATEWIDE organization in Colorado.
The first thing that sets them apart is the fact that they accommodate their services to those who have a disability. They recognize not all disabilities are visible. They also serve those who experienced ALL types of abuse. This is so different from any other organization in Colorado.
As a former employee of The Initiative, I can say this was one of the best professional experiences I have had thus far.
Being an advocate is not always easy due to vicarious trauma but this organization takes cares of their employees and most importantly their clients.
If you know someone who is a survivor of abuse and may or may not have a disability refer them to The Initiative.

This place is terrible. I've been stalked for almost four years, slowly having my life picked apart. And yes, part of that is her contacting the police constantly, for going places that I've been going since before she moved to CO, along with HR (when we were employed by the same company) until she got me fired, attacking me at art shows until they didn't want me to come back, and anywhere else she could force me out of. She made a video of me at her house, which along with ME filing a lawsuit to remove her, decided the police to do criminal charges. Completely ignored her to the above pieces, her hunting me down when I tried to move, or the multiple photos and security videos from my neighbors showing up at mine, plus witnessing the fact that I never go anywhere anymore, that I'm freaked out and stressed all the time. Advised to take a plea deal because I could have lost my medical and teaching employee ability. I was honest about that, but just got told they decided not to help me because of the criminal piece. I'm moving away from the woman and getting my address protected does nothing to her. So I told this place about the hell I'm going through and they "believe" me, but because of one of the terrible things she did they won't help.
