I began working with the Disque Foundation three years ago as a junior in high school, not really completely understanding our mission. However, it didn't take me very long to see the big picture. The Disque Foundation seeks to empower people to save lives by providing free life support training, such as CPR. CPR is an extremely useful skill, and one that, in my opinion, every one should know.
It wasn't until the following year that I realized the importance of knowing how to perform CPR. My grandma suffered from congestive heart failure, and as I stared blankly at her limp body waiting for the ambulance to arrive, I wished there was something I could do to help her. However, I had yet to be trained in CPR and thus just talked to the 911 operator, panicking and praying for help to arrive. Luckily they did, and my grandma ended up okay.
Soon after this event, I got the opportunity to not only become CPR certified, but also to become a CPR instructor. Now I get to go work with other non-for-profit organizations by teaching them and the communities they serve these life saving skills for free of cost. I've traveled to New Orleans and help rebuild parts of the lower ninth ward yet to be restored from Hurricane Katrina as well as teach a local recreational center how to perform CPR. I've also been able to teach various homeless shelters in Indiana how to perform CPR.
