Not only does DHMHS provide a continuum of services in the mental health and behavioral health area for children and adults, its suicide crisis line is available 24/7 in multiple languages and in text. In addition to services that other agencies provide, DHMHS provides unique services in serveral areas such as short term interim housing for mentally ill and dual diagnosed persons and a year long living facility for women with mental illness problems where they get treatment, job training and where their children (if below school age) can live with them.

I served on the board of directors of the United Way of Greater Los Angeles for nine years and we always rated Didi Hirsch at the top of our list and, as a result, we allocated United Way funds to Didi Hirsch at the highest levels. After leaving United Way's board I joined Didi Hirsch's board and have served for thirteen years. They are making a huge difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands people.

Not to mention being the pioneers in the field of Suicide prevention! The Suicide prevention crisis line provides support to those in crisis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, they are one of three crisis lines who provide emotional support to those who have been affected by a natural or man made disaster for the Disaster Distress Helpline!!
After my father's suicide, Didi Hirsch had so much support to offer. From counseling to group meetings to monthly meetings, I was able to receive support, education, and resources to get me through the most difficult time of my life. 3 1/2 years later, I still look to Didi Hirsch for support and am so thankful for the love, care and hope that their organization has provided to me.

After losing a son to suicide, I joined a Survivors after Suicide group to help work out the terrible conflicts and burdens left behind. From that experience, which I found so very helpful, my interest in Didi Hirsch grew and led to being considered for and joining the Board of Directors. For over ten years I have found my involvement to increase and my ability to help he agency grow as well. The organization threw me a lifeline and now, I hope to help usher it always into a stronger and stronger position to help those who need mental health services who would otherwise not be able to afford the vital care needed. Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services does incredibly important work. It provides outpatient mental health care to children and adults throughout Los Angeles. It has crisis residential programs for mentally ill adults discharged from hospitals with nowhere else to go. It has a world-renowned Suicide Prevention Center that takes calls from around the U.S. and has cutting-edge programs to help people who have attempted or lost someone to suicide. I have volunteered or worked for this agency for more than six years and am more passionate than ever about the quality of care clients receive here everyday. Didi Hirsch truly lives up to its mission statement of providing quality mental health care to people in communities where poverty or stigma limit access. The programs are excellent and get tremendous results. The mental health professionals, staffers, employment coaches, medical personnel, housing specialists and others are top-notch even by for-profit sector standards. Didi Hirsch's Suicide Prevention Center is nationally renowned for its training, outreach and suicide prevention services. Didi Hirsch is all about erasing the stigma and transforming lives. And it succeeds at every level.
Didi Hirsch has many wonderful and amazing programs. One of them is Via Avanta a Non Profit residential treatment program that provides substance abuse treatment to single, pregnant and parenting women ages eighteen and older in a safe, comforting, supportive, drug free environment. Via Avanta is a long term program where women can stay up to one year. The women also Receive Mental Health Services on site with Licensed Professional.
Children up to the age of five can live at the residence while their mothers are in treatment. The children attend childcare and participate in developmentally beneficial activities while their mothers are in group. The program offers Child/Parent Therapy with a licensed professional
Mothers attend parenting classes. Learn job skills, and participate in substance abuse groups. Via Avanta offers individual and group chemical dependency counseling, HIV testing, Parenting, Mommy & Me, and interactive parenting classes. Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and other 12-step programs, Domestic violence, Vocational assistance. Assistance with court, parole, probation and custody obligations. Child Care assistance and Recreational alternatives and aftercare support.

I am a retired MSW Social Worker and have been a volunteer on the Suicide Prevention Hotline at Didi Hirsch for almost 2 years. In spite of my professional background I had to go through a 100 hour training program that was one of the best I have ever experienced. I have also gone through 3 additional trainings since I began working as a volunteer on the hotline. One of the main goals of Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services is to reduce the stigma of suffering from a mental illness. It is tragic that, in 2014, suffering from a mental disorder can still be seen as something shameful.
I was diagnosed with clinical depression in my twenties. I am in my forties now, and I continue to take medication to regulate my mood. The worst period was - prior to my allowing medication to be a part of my daily routine - when I contemplated suicide. Imagine for a moment, standing on the el track platform in Chicago, waiting for the next train and realizing that you are thinking about what it would be like to take a step...just one step...off that platform and on to the tracks as the train is barreling down on you.
I was appalled at myself for that first thought, and then it seemed like I couldn't turn those kinds of thoughts off.
I'm lucky. I found help.
Every year now, since I moved to the area, I participate in Alive and Running. I know how important it is that there is somewhere people can turn to get help. Thanks to Didi Hirsch for being one of those places.

Mental health can be overlooked when we think about being "healthy." This organization is committed to treating the whole person, taking both physical and mental health into consideration. They also help clients find employment/housing and have treatment programs for people addicted to drugs/alcohol. On top of all of this, they are experts in suicide prevention, having a call center that takes suicide hotline calls as well as online chat and texting support. They do so many things, truly a beacon of light in a badly damaged world.

I am a volunteer crisis counselor at the Didi Hirsch Suicide Prevention Center Hotline. I was very impressed with the extensive training I received to become a counselor two and a half years ago, and I continue to be impressed with the way Didi Hirsch reaches out to their staff and the community they serve. They have expanded the hotline to offer additional language services, a CHAT line and the Disaster Crisis Line, sometimes in spite of limited resources, and all the while maintaining the same rigorous standards of care.

Recently I had the wonderful experience of volunteering and participating in the annual Alive and Running 5k. I was so very impressed with the entire event, from how well planned it was, to the energy of the volunteers. I can not remember participating in a more meaningful and heart warming cause.
